ATI Radeon X1950 Announced

that is one funky cooler. the only thing i liked about the old one was how it sucked air in from the back, letting you put a card underneath without restricting airflow.

It didn't suck in air from the back, it used air from inside the case and pulled it through the heatsink and exhausted it outside the case.

Firstly it needs SLi to work correctly, and secondly it has two PCB's. How on earth can it be considered a single card? It's a stellar performer, but it's about as elegant as a rhino attempting to waltz.

I don't care how many PCB's a card has when it takes up the same amount of room as another card (7900GTX, 1900XT/XTX) and using only one PCI slot AND makes half the noise in some cases, I'll accept that as the best single card solution. Plus, since when did symantecs get argued in [H] the fact is that beast pwned.

Ick. There sure are some ugly coolers coming out of Canada.

Not an undesirable product by any means, but I'm hoping we'll see more from R600 and G80 than minor architectural overhauls fabbed in a slightly better process or this year's going to be pretty boring. Quit teasing, you GPU giants - give us those 300 watt beasties already.

7950's not really a single card solution because it is, quite obviously, comprised of more than one "card". It is a single slot solution. But hey - you can still use two, which is all that really matters, right?

It's been a while since I've seen such a great jump in memory bus capabilities as from the X900 series to the X1900 series. The memory bus on the X1900 was said by ATI to be able to reach speeds so excessive that it would be almost ludicrous to expect the core to keep up with the memory.

The ring memory part of the core is one advancement I'm in awe of and I am also in awe of the fact that I think so soon after the ring came out that there is a memory that can probably MAX the ring out! "Forget light speed, light speed is too slow, take us to Ludicrous Speed!"

Uhm. Outta curriosity. Why would you want 104gbps memory fillrate when there no chance in hell the GPU can fill it ? 2x the bandwidth you'd need probably 175% more GPU power to make use of it.

The ring was a design that will be used for generations to come. It wasn't just made for this generation. And besides you know some people only buy things because they have large Ghz numbers on the box.

How could Nvidia sell so many FX's if it werent otherwise? lmfao...

I agree the cooler is UGLY, if I buy it and want to stay air, I'll buy a X1900 heatsink off fleybay /etc and slap it on it and throw away the X1950 cooler while burning it and chanting anti devil chants.

Well the Cooler isnt that big a concern beauty wise to me as is the fact that the new design looks to like it may be quiter. It has the blowing air out design of the Artic Coolers of the past.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm just more confused @ this point. Just how much of an improvement are we looking @ here?

I don't think Nvidia's cards have the ability to run gddr4, but Im not sure since ATI's ring bus mem controller gets all the attention. Might not be a wise decision with dx10 around the corner, but Im excited to see what kind of FPS these guys will spit out. My WAG is they come stock with 2.0-1.8GHz ram speed and overclock to about 2.2-2.4ghz.

He means the back of the card, opposite the PCI bracket.

Oh wow...
I'd love to say "I can't wait till this comes out so I can buy a X1900XT for cheap!" but I'm waiting for the R600 :(
QFT

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking. I almost posted that same comment. :)

True with DX10 coming out this card is for those with money to throw around. But Hey, isnt that most of our little board here regardless?
Heres hoping to great performance in the X1950XTX! :D

rumor is they will be hitting these cards stock with 2.4 ghz, and possible room to go up to 3ghz on OC, and this is on the first revision released to us

There is so much turmoil and new crap hitting the market... that I'm stuck with my x850xt until the dust settles.

RojakPot has the X1950 XTX and X1950 CrossFire specs!
http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=88

I will write it here so you can read it all together.

Card--------------Core--Memory----------------------Mem Band--Vetex pipes--Pixel Pipes--Pixel Shader Engines
X1950 XTX-------650--1,000 (2GHz effective)--64GB/s-------8------------------16--------------48
X1950 CF ED--650--1,000 (2GHz effective)--64GB/s-------8-------------------16--------------48

Both cards use version 3 for the vertex and pixel shaders, have 384 million transistors and
made using the .09 micoron process.

I don't know where they got the numbers from but I think are pretty snazy!

Word was going around when the X1900XTX was released that this generation was intended for GDDR4 and that the card had WAY more to offer. I am sooooo getting this card.

Once again ATi proves to be the best in consumer graphics. :D

Best looking, fastest around.

GDDR4... 32GB/s peak bandwidth (it's gonna be slower with tighter timings)... wow!

No one has mentioned how much of a performance increase this could bring yet. How much could an increase in mem bandwidth really cause w/ the GPU in the same clock, and with a supposed increased mem latency aswell?

Not to bring down the x1950 but I wonder if I should really bother with it instead of buying what will obviously be cheaper (x1900xt), and pocket the saved $ for what seems to be a a crazy winter of hardware and software releases.

you are asking that question so soon, you can't buy the cheaper X1900XT right now as the cheaper version of the X1900XT isn't released, infact its being released the same time as the X1950XTX is

so do what the rest of us are planning, wait for it to be released to making any kind of buying decision, not before

we honestly don't know the pricing skeem for the 1950's or how they'll be matched up against what we currently have out, how ever if price is a factor in your purchase you'd still be smarter to wait for the 256meg version of the X1900XT to come out as they have stated that will start at $300

Check out X1950XTX cooler just got... well cooler :D

New X1950 Cooler

I can even see some heatpiping going on and that copper sink looks massive. Looks promising!

Wow that looks even sweeter. Looks like theres an opening at the right side of the cooler just above the fan, maybe to blow over the ram a bit.

Very cool.
