windowed mode in games (performance)

evening peeps, i was wondering if somone might know what could cause my terrible performance when i play games in windowed mode. i once had it working fine but i dont know what i did back then, atm games run at like 1-2 fps. is there something im missing to set in the gfx options menu or some other settings to get it working at a normal framerate.
