Well a few days of consistent lock ups have finally convinced me my 360 is finished. I've had a few lock ups before but the past few days it's been bad. It's a launch system so I'm thinking I'm just one of the unlucky ones. I've been pretty easy on the system too. Only thing is with the lock ups on the past few days I haven't had any red rings. However my girlfriend when she used it said the screen would go red or red spotted which I hadn't seen myself. I'll be using my one time swap with the best buy replacement plan. I guess this time I'll probably get the M$ warranty. Kind of a bitch though 8-9months old.

Guess I'm just bitching.

Let me guess. You didn't buy an extended warranty for it?

If not, let this be a lesson to you in being a guinea pig for a new console system.

He said he had a warranty in the post...

And we are all guinea pigs as consumers, no matter what or when we buy.

I never buy an extended warranty. Waste of money, in my opinion.

You could always call Microsoft and have them send you a new one. I'm on my 3rd 360 and this always works for me. The new one gets here within 4 days.

My Launch Day XBOX 360 also bit the dust 2 months ago. It wasn't even used that much. :( M$ sent me a refurbished one. :(

I'm anal about mine now. I run it with an 92mm fan I wired up to USB. I'll probably open it up and put some Artic silver on the heatsink soon.

I find it hard to believe that they would happily send you a new 360 out of warranty.

Actually MS has been making a number of exceptions on the 360 in order to avoid any bad press and make sure their customers are happy. They are in a battle for marketshare, and a very winnable battle at that. So the last thing they want to do is alienate early adopters who might have had a console die a few weeks or months out of warranty.

Replacing so many consoles must be a *huge* expense for them. It costs them nearly $600 per sonsole, right? And if you go through three of them...

What about the many numbers of reports claiming that after a certain cutoff point (a month after your warranty officially expires, I think?) they're asking for a $160 repair charge? Or does the cutoff point vary for each person?

Don't come crying in here then when your 360/PS3/Wii breaks after warranty and they won't fix it/replace it for free.

I have the replacement plan from Best Buy. It would just suck having to use it already because right now it's in the one time replacement deal. Meaning I will have to buy a new replacement plan which is like 50 bucks I think. I may give the MS help line a call for the hell of it to see what they say. However by now I'm about 4 or 5 months out of the warranty so I wouldn't hold my breath.

This isn't a flame, but I'm so glad I live in Europe and don't have to put up with this 9 month warranty crap. How the hell companies get away with it is beyond me. To me that says "we expect this machine to last 9 months, no more.". Frankly that's bullshit, I'd expect gear like that to last two years minimum, more like three.

[Edit 1 - WTF, I just read that it's not even a 9 month warranty, it's 3 months. Is that right?!?]
[Edit 2 - Apparently so, interesting article on it here: http://www.2old2play.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=192&mode=nested&order=0&thold=0 ]

Well I played around a little with it this morning. I moved it from where it was sitting and it seems to have started working again. Not because of heat but it seems it's more of because of the power cable not being as cramped through one area. It was definitely not an over heating issue cause it's happened when the system was cool and first turned on. While playing with it I got the 3 red lights in the ring the upper right hand one not being lit. Also it would have the issues while reading a dvd/game disc normally. If this is the case though why is it so finiky about the power cable. The Brick was in a well ventellated place the power cable though was going through some cramped spaces though.

I did just that. If they didn't make it right, then they will keep replacing them for me till I get one that works. I'll never buy an extended warranty.

Nintendo does 1 year, and are way more forgiving that MS or Sony when it comes to replacements. Again, I sent my DS back after the warranty period was over. No questions other than how to get the refurb back to me.

I work at SCEA so my Sony replacements are free :D

Yes, it is a 3 month warranty. Microsoft has artificially extended it to around 6 months, though, as they know if they didn't they would have a class action on their hands.

No, MS is actually making money on the 360s, unlike the original Xbox. There was an interview with the head of Xbox Japan where he said they were making money on every console shipped (albeit very little), and in Japan the premiums cost about $350.

And even with the original Xbox, they weren't losing more than $50 per console, at least at launch. Last year when they halted production of Xboxes, they were actually making them for well below retail cost.

Um... no. The only context in which that statement was correct, is with selling games along with the console (i.e. somebody buys a live subscrip, 99 nights and ffix with the console, it's not so much a loss anymore). Microsoft is losing over $100 on each console - some reports peg it at $175, some at $125. They are losing money per console, and they only way they are making it back is with a Live subcsription and game sales. Financial reports, of course, peg the original XBox's losses at over 4 billion, and so far I *believe* (i don't remember the exact amount) they've bled somewhere in the range of 1.5-2 billion on the 360.

The difference here, however, is that *eventually* the price of the 360 will come down for MS - and the first step of that starts next year with the die shrink. That didn't happen with the XBox, which is why they continued to bleed. It's all part of their strategy for both consoles, however, in that they are taking the "loss leader" approach - whether that pays off remains to be seen, but they're still in the market, aren't they?

it died. still lockeded up after a while. I just went and replaced it at Best Buy. One of the reasons I picked up the replacement plan however is I figured that if there was a new version of the console released or one with a better package normally you can use the replacement plan and get what ever is equal value. There for if there is a newer version that comes out I bring it back and get that one.

You have learned much young Padawan. But you are not a Jedi yet.....

Not necessarily. Remember that they are refurbishing or reconditioning units to ship out to people. The only thing involved is the labor to replace whatever part is broken. I have a launch day unit that probably has 750+ hours of gameplay on it, and i'm pretty satisfied. The only lockups i've had were with MLB 2K6(one of the buggiest games i've ever seen), and Oblivion(only after I killed certain quest related NPC's). Luckily for me, I bought Microsoft's warranty as i'm not a fan of how places like Best Buy do their product replacement plans.

I can't. He's a robot. Robots have no emotion, he's just programed that way to fool us. You can't reason with a machine!!

Your post makes no sense. You say that they are making money back on the games and that the statement they are making money is correct only in regard to the fact that they're selling games, but then you say that they've already lost 2 billion on the 360.

I'm not talking about huge profits here, but I don't see that they've lost 2 billion already on the 360. If you lose 2 billion dollars on the Xbox 360 in less than one year, that's a little hard to make up even if you're Microsoft. It's larger than the GDP of many countries.

And a lot of times that places "estimate" the cost of components inside game consoles, they get it all wrong because they're using OEM equivalents for things that are both not available for the mac or PC markets and have the added cost of transportation and other expenses that aren't there when you just make everything in close to the same area.

Dont believe the FUD some fans will lay out there. In order for MS to have lost 2 billion on the 360 they would have had to sell 10-20 million units, and not make a single dime back on games, live or accessories. Since they have only sold 5 million, and HAVE made profits on games/accessories and live subscriptions I call BS. An interesting fact, the 360 has the highest attachment rate (games per console) of any console EVER. That can only bode well for MS so far.

That being said....MS is still losing money on the 360 so far, just not 2 billion dollars in 9 months. In fact if you look at their fiscal statements the operational loss is only up 800 million year over year, and they have lost around 1 billion since the 360 was introduced, half that Steviep the Second would have you believe.

I chose the extended warranty from BB basically b/c I am lazy and want immediate satisfaction. For 50$ I can take it to a BB store 5 minutes away and have a replacement that day. Definitely worth it to me.

If you were in college or something I could see not being able to afford it/justify it, but for me the ease of return/ immediate gratification is worth the $50....
