Updated US sales numbers

heh.. sorry can't be..
The ps3 can play.. PS1 and Ps2 games.
Xbox360.. can barely play xbox games.

can't quite make that comparison.. if The xbox360 is not perfect with its backquard compatibility :)

lets see how good the pѕ3 is before you decide. they are going the ѕoftware emulation route too.

Incorrect, they are putting the PS2 hardware inside the first PS3s. They WERE going to do the software route, but found that they wouldn't have near-100% compatibility by launch, so they said they're putting the PSTwo chips in there, and will change over to software when they are ready to do so (and as a cost cutting measure later in the PS3's life).

I think you are putting to much weight into backwards compatibilty. Former PS2 owner now own a 360 and not looking back.

How can you say a product has technical problems.. When its not owned by anyone? That is an anti-sony statement. IF you are going to argue use logic please.

For the love of Christ, do some research.

Blu-Ray players have seen delay after delay because the technology isn't ready. IBM is getting ridiculously low yields out of their Cell chips. Those are technical problems.

His comparison is correct. and your rebuttle was weak.

The only thing weak in this thread is your grammar.

The PS2 didn't sell because of backwards compatibility. It sold on hype, pure and simple. The Japanese bought it because of the cheap DVD capabilities, but the rest of the world bought it because of hype alone.

No. The PS3 = the new PS2.

There is nothing formulaic about focusing on the interactive/feature-packed multiplayer area in the industry.

Do some fuckin research kid. X360 emulation is flawless for nearly every game that matters, and until the PS3 is released, you can't know that the PS3 emulation will be "perfect".

I wouldn't call 360 emulation flawless (Halo 2 still isn't perfect, and that's their top priority). And yes, Live is a fantastic online system - but aside from a couple examples, most of the games themselves have been quite formulaic. Not that it's a bad thing to a lot of people, but those looking for unique titles will have to wait longer for developers to think outside of the box. If the PS3 does indeed use the PsTwo hardware for BC, as has been said, backwards compatibility will be >99%... but as you said, we'll have to wait to see how it pans out. It had better work better than Microsoft's current solution, though, otherwise it will just be another PR bungle to add to the list of recent Sony idiocies.

I've yet to have a single problem in several ventures through the game. I haven't had any issues online either except for a few foul-mouthed jackasses.

...assuming Sony ships us optical media drives that actually work. Their hardware isn't known for reliability and their customer service certainly isn't known for being helpful. You won't get shit out of them without a class-action lawsuit.

I'd be glad if Sony adds PStwo hardware in there. That'll just put them even deeper in the red.

is sony taking an enormous gamble? yes... and they are probably putting too much into this gamble... will blu-ray sink the ps3 ship or fuel it into the next generation as the top console? who knows...

but regardless, to them, i feel that it has a lot more to do about blu-ray than anything else... blu-ray is what they are betting their money on, if blu-ray becomes the next gen media, then ps3 will be a success

hd-dvd and blu-ray have not yet penetrated the general consumer; however, the release of the PS3 will get an enormous number of bd players out there, this is a very good way to get bluray into the consumers hands

sony knows that they are not going to dominate marketshare as PS2 did... no matter how good the PS3 is... however, if they can move more blu-ray players and win the format war, then the concept of owning a PS3 will change...

i know that most of the ppl here do not plan to use the PS3 as a movie player...and many would argue that the extra functions of the PS3 is absolutely useless and will not be used... but when high definition takes on a more dominant role in the entertainment world, ppl may start to see the PS3 as the ideal buy, spending some more (expecting price drops as their production expenses drop) but getting a next gen hd movie playing device as well...

it appears that sony is trying to build to the future, produce a console that will not end up outdated too quickly, i.e. hdmi 1.3 and blu-ray, while both of these features will most definitely anger consumers right now, 2-3 years down the road... it may start to appeal to the general public

and as noted earlier, the PS2 is still the top selling console in the US... and thus being, it does make sense to go out on a limb and take some more time to bring more advanced technology while still possible... hdmi is great and all but it wont be fully implemented for another few years anyway... so best to get it right with hdmi 1.3 and be ready to offer 1080p to its fullest potent a few years from now

Well, as a consumer I can say that neither HDMI nor Blu-Ray anger me, in fact, I welcome them both. Yesterday I ended up trolling around the King of Prussia Mall (in PA) with some friends, and we wandered into a Sony Style Store. They had a Blu-Ray demo set up, and it looks fantastic, I am more excited about it now than ever.

Sony played the Dreamcast launch well, they released FFIIX on the same day as the dreamcast, any while it turned out to be a crappy game (IMO) everyone was expecting it to live up to FFVII standards thus lots of people just picked that up for $50 instead of the dreamcast for however much it cost at launch (as much of a Sega fan as I am, I still had a grudge a against the company for how quickly they dropped support for the SegaCD).

The 360 has already proven it won't have the same success as the PS2, it is still a total flop in Japan, which is the second largest gaming market in the world. The Wii still has a chance, but only time will tell how that battle plays out.

Nitpick, Japan is now the third largest market after Europe, but your point still stands. :) Personally I don't think any of this next generation of consoles will dominate the market, though if any of them do, it will likely be the Nintendo simply because of a wider demographic appeal.

Another nitpick, Europe isn't a nation, it is a continent ;). Sorry, I just get sorta miffed when entire EU statistics get compared against the US or Japan or other fully sovereign nations.

No but it is a single market as far as nintendo, sony, and microsoft see it.

Beat me to it. :) I do think it's pretty frightening that Japan (Population 127 million) was outspending Europe (Population 460 million +) until very recently. Crazy Japanese. :D

I think the wii will dominate due to it's innovation, i mean the whole controller system is pretty cool looking, not to mention the nintendo name on it, plus all the nintendo only games (such as zelda) many people are fans of. Now if only the name didn't sound like taking a p***

I recently had to buy a new PS2. EB's generous trade in policy plus a $20 extra coupon from Game Informer meant I only has to pay $50 for the thing, so I am not that pissed off about it. I already have plenty of PS2 memory cards laying around, I just hope the PS3 reads SD cards so the same cards I use for my phone will work in the console.
