I just bought a Thermaltake Big Typhoon yesterday from the Tiger Direct store near my
house, I brought it back, installed...installed it again because I didn't tighten it as much as
I would have like'd to(it's perfect now), I have my 4800x2 oc'd to 2.64(12x219) at 1.4v :) .

Everest reports that at idle my temp are between 39-44c, and it reported that my load
temp got all the way up to 53c while running 3dmark05(13,821 :p ), these temps are
crazy, or maybe I'm just expecting too much from this cooler...am I???

Am I doing something wrong???

Specs are in my sig

Did you remember thermal paste? I dont mean to insult your intelegence, but somtimes little things slip peoples mind when they do these things.

if thats not the case, make sure that the Fan is spinnin up to its full potential and make sure that the BIOS is reading the same thing as Everest because i have found that Everest reads things on my computer 2C cooler than they really are. So its possible also that its reading your sensors wrong.

Though those temps don't seem that outragous for an overclocked AMD. Mine idles at 38 with my Zalman, though i would think that for the size of that thing, you would get better.

Also check your case airflow to make sure that your pushing the heat drawn from the processor out of your case, hot air doesnt cool very well.

How hot is it in the room with the computer? Maybe that has something to do with it.

I'd say 75f-80f air off, a lot cooler when the air's on, it's Miami man...what'd you expect?

I just decided to take the case panel off and it dropped my temps about 2-4 degrees  ,not to happy about taking the panel off but I just wanted to see what it could do.

Any other suggestions would be great, thanks

Seems like an airflow problem if taking the side off helped THAT much.

edited.

2-4 degrees, sorry about that

It helps a little, but I am seeing people with the same temp's I'm getting so it's not worrying me as much as it was, though, I would still like some pointers on what action's I should take to relieve these high temps from my cpu

Also, is there anyway I can make my Typhoon go faster, it's at 1319rpm right now, can I make it go any faster???

Thanks

its about right.

Mine is about the same specs, and I get around the same temps.

Remember, alot of people lie to increase their epenis.

Your house IS pretty hot, not to mention a higher end dual core. If you put the right amount of thermal paste on as per the official AS5 instructions online, then i'm thinking that's about right.

Maybe try re-seating it once more and letting the AS5 cure?

make sure u remove the protective plastic film, dont be a lazymoron. (find his thread)

Nah, lol, I removed all the excess plastic and other objects from the heatsink before I installed it

So getting close to 55c is okay then when playing games??? (ie.BF2,Oblivion, DOD:S, F.E.A.R)

I'm having a Big Typhoon be sent to me by a friend (never used)....although I'm getting another fan for it. (120mm Panaflo High Speed (114 CFM)).

Most of the reviews I've read say that its pretty nice as far as Air Cooling goes, and I think the new fan will really help.

55c is fine unless it is crashing or doing lame shit like that..

I just ran 3dMark06(score:8518 :p ) and the highest temp that Speedfan and Everest reported was 49c under full load, fine by me if people are saying that 55c is fine. There is definately no artifacting or unexpected reboots, everything ran fine. Does anybody know what the max temp threshold for a AMD 4800 is??? I would just like to stay as far away from it as possible

+ Thanks for all the help so far

im 95% positive its just because the IHS is concave or convex, and its not making good contact with the part over the core, happened with my opty with xp90c loaded 52c no matter ambient, from 40f to 80f

Could you explain further???

basically the silvery-metal cover is warped on your cpu. If you have brass balls and feel adventurous google a guide on how to remove the IHS without breaking anything and then remount the HSF onto the core itself.

iirc, doesn't the big typhoon come with a nexus fan?

removing the cover for the proc is a ballsy thing to do. You really gotta be willing to accept some consequences if you are planning on doing that. However, If you do it correctly, it could fix your problem. You could also try lapping your proc cover and hs base, that might help things a little.

The only thing that i have noticed about HSFs like the Typhoon is that since the HS is above the proc instead of directly on it, they tend not to cool as well for some reason. I had a SilverStone Nitrogon, and i felt it was the same problem there as well. I personally opt to go with HSFs that actually make contact between the main HS and the proc.

yea okay thats why the big typhoon happens to be one of the best air coolers on the market  both the big typhoon and the nitrogen have something called heatpipes which move heat towards the fins alot faster than heat would travel directly on the fins

AHHAHAHAHHHAHHHAHHAHAHAHHA *takes a breath* HAHAAHA...

this would mean that, in your opinion, the zalman cnps9500 sucks. the big typhoon sucks. the nt06 sucks. the xp90 sucks. the xp120 sucks. [edit - oops, the xp's shouldn't be in this list, forgot they're connected to the base] the si-120 sucks. the hr-01 (or whatever thermalright's tower one was) sucks. the scythe ninja sucks. and pretty much every other recommended and praised heatsink there is sucks.

too bad you didnt get his point. the xp90/xp120 are fine and so is the ninja. the si-120 and hr-01, ultra90 and ultra120 and the cnps9500 and BT and nt06 suck, in his opinion.

tuniq tower 120 would also suck in his opinion

I agree with the warped cpu ex. I got a si-120 with 5 fans and a 110cfm cpu fan and I hit 55c at a load with a 2.6 OC. I tried everything to reapplying paste to lapping hsf + cpu, nothing helped much. I was also told my cpu is warped, and after wasting all my time optimising my air cooling, that must be the case. My ambient temps are like 28-35 lol. I am going to watercooling and if that doesnt help, its off with the cover.

i got the same HSF dood. My OC system idles at between 34 where its at right now in the wee hours of the morning to 38-39 during the day when this room is far warmer. Prime 95 will get me 46-48 and gaming might get me a little more than that. We are not too far off. Don't remove the HS from the CPU unless you can replace it if you make a mistake.

Ive removed plenty before and I still get nervous doing so.

Finally, if your system shows no signs of instability while at these temps, then you're definately fine. Consider better ventiallation though since you did say you were able to drop the temps some but even then, it's not that crucial you do that either.

Good luck. It's a nice HSF and huge. Before I got this puppy, my temps were out of control.

Lates.
