Chromehounds reviewed 8.7

Yeah I agree this is a love/hate game. If you're into a sorta slow placed game, with tactics put in front of run and gun action (think Mechassault), this game is probably enjoyable.

I think most of the ratings were low because they mainly reflected the single player aspect, which is basically a training mode for when you go online. I like the idea of clans and mini wars that can go on for 2 months. I really hope a lot of people buy this game, and I feel like the fact that it's not just pick up and play means that many of the 12 year old annoying kids that you are talking about won't really get this game. Or at least if they do, they'll just stick the the deathmatch modes and leave the clan stuff to us serious gamers.. ;) :p

I would get this game if it had a better single player mode. Looks like it has good MP but poor SP. That means it's a no-buy from me, unfortuntely.

WTF? Multiplayer is the best part. If you honestly don't pay for Xbox live, then your cutting yourself short on ALOT of future games. In which case, I don't feel sorry for you.

Let's not start arguing about why you should or shouldn't game online. It's off topic in this thread, and it's purely opinion.

This post was formerly about single-player versus multiplayer, and thus off-topic.

Good god the servers for this game suck balls...BIG ONES! I swear to christ almost every game i try to play online craps out...and then I have to go through the dumbass reconnect everytime.

yeah they are having problems but that is partially due to the fact that they're all located in Japan (apparently) and that on the 18th when they bring the servers down for maintenance they'll have a bunch in the states as well as europe. So here's to hoping.

THIS GAME ROCKS HARD!!! I give it a 9.0 indeed. Im loving every minute of it.. XBL is where the game is at though... SP is meh, but it does help you learn and gain for XBL.

The reviews always ding it for the same two things: very little single-player, and technical issues with the multi-player. I'll wait for the patch, and then reconsider the game.

I picked this game up last thrusday (waited two days because of all the meh reviews) but then read a bunch of USER reviews in various forums I read, and they were all OVERWHELMINGLY positive. So I gave it a try, joined a squad on another forum I read, and all I can say is

WOW.

Single is indeed bleh and boring, but all it is is a tutorial for each role type (Soldier, Gunner, Commander, Sniper, Scout, Defender) for when you go online. The singleplayer bit I'd give a solid 6.5 out of 10.

But holy farking christ, when you get online......

THIS is the kind of game xbox live was MADE for. A persistent online war, news updates every so often as to the state of the battlefield, when an area is in danger of falling the system will issue an order for squads to converge on that one area and take it back or come on the attack. Insane customization of your 'hound. Nation-wide lotteries for captured/experimental parts. And then the best part...

Teamwork and squad combat.
Teams stay in touch with each other by capturing network towers to expand your communications network, or stay within range of the commander and his Network area (or a combo of both). Scouts (or the commander) seek out enemy positions, direct the Soldiers/snipers to the locations of the enemy units or call in the Heavy Gunners for area bombardment. Once the enemy HQ is located, the heavy gunners are called on to obliterate it under an arty barrage (or several soldiers can rocket it to death). You cannot Lone Wolf the War missions; if you do, you will get owned. For those that prefer to lone wolf from time to time, there are individual missions on xbox live that will earn you some spare cash.

So if the thought of stomping around in a giant mech, armed to the teeth, with teammates barking coordinates and orders at one another over the comm and obliterating everything that stands in your way, this game is for you. This game is everything that steel batallion SHOULD have been. This is easily the most satisfying multiplayer experience on the xbox360 to date. Mech fans/tactical shooter fans will both get a kick out of this.

Despite all the middling reviews, word of mouth is traveling fast and a lot of ppl are having a hard time finding this game; many places apparently didnt order that many copies and are selling out.

As far as server problems go, I've heard there have been several but i played maybe 5 hours friday night and 3 hours last night and not had any disconnects. Seems like all the server hiccups are happening either in the VERY late night or in the afternoons.

This is my first week review of the game. I too was fence standing on this game after the reviews came out, but I after I pleaded with my bud at Gamestop to let me return it if I hated it, I decided to go for it

I haven't been able to put down this game multiplayer wise. Honestly, get this game for XBox Live, the only thing good about the single player is the unlocking of free parts for your mech and training, beyond that, online is were this is at.

I've been playing skirmishes with people in teams the past week, just to get my mech legs back under me again after years away after the Mechwarrior series went south. I've never had so much fun playing a game online since BF1942 first launched. I group up with a team and we constantly voice back and forth our status, location and enemies tactics. Nothing more fun then sniping a mech to death from afar and then having your teammates cheer you on the mic! Why can't PC gaming be like this easy and fun? I honestly haven't touched my PC in over 2 weeks since I got my 360.

Its a total blast charging up a hill or smashing through a town as we blast the living shit out of everything we see as the enemy approaches, voicing back to teamates for help. Its especially awesome to have people actually work as a team and have the scouts secure COMBAS's while defenders *me* and soldiers go charging for the enemy while our commanders and snipers stand lookout on a hill and watch the battle from afar plinking away at enemies.

I was asked to join an clan in England and the guy gave me 2 million in money and helped me out till like 3am in the morning building the perfect mech to help with campaign missions. I haven't even gotten started on making custom decals and stuff for my mech! You can make almost any decal from scratch in any size, color, arrangment or order that you want, no mech is ever the same and i've seen some really weird, cool, ugly, insane mechs online, people are really creative!

Fuck the reviews, this game is a blast!!

I rented it last night and so far I like it, even the the single player portion. Much more enjoyible then the last game I got...over-g fighters

I bought it so far its great. Havent got to go through much of it but so far Im finding it more fun than the reviews let on.

Are you the same redleader from head-fi?

Im gonna pick this up today. With all the reviews you guys are putting up, I think I will like it.

I got this game a day after it came out, played it for a few hours, and got quickly bored of it. I think the key to this game is to have a good Live squad to fight in the war. I tried fighting in one war but my mech was destroyed and now I have -$130,000. Also, 7 wars were fought from when I got it to a couple days later, which is too quick. This is a love/hate game, and I am sure its great, but it's just not for me.

I've been questioning IGNs integrity ever since they gave WWE Raw 2 for the Xbox a 9.1. It was such a horribly buggy game.

(should have been higher in my opinion)

Maybe Chromehounds is a love it/hate it game that should be rented before deciding on a purchase?
opinion, it's all about opinion. no matter what any of us say on this thread or anywhere in the world. the bottom line is that no matter how many people say a game is shoddily made, there is always that one person that thinks the games are "OMG THE GREATEST THING I"VE EVER PLAYED!". Why do you think they keep making dragon ball Z games? because they're GOOD?! HA! nay, it is because there is that wonderful demographic of people who are obsessively in love with the Dragon Ball Z franchise...and that just happens to be a very large demographic so they keep buyin the games, and they keep gettin shot out the poop chute. *just an example, nothing personal against dragon ball Z...it's all just opinion :) *

Yeah a [H] squad would be cool, my gamertag is my username so if it ever happens msg me maybe i'll leave the squad i'm in already.

I just picked it up. Boy, this game is a lot deeper and generally more enjoyable that I'd expected it to be. Obviously I'm brand new to the game, but if you'd like another member, feel free to message me. My gamertag's Trastan. :D
