Hey guys, i noticed an increasing number of people who seem to be using Pentosin. Why are you using this? Is the increase really that better then water? What ratio of Pentosin/water are you using? Are there any precautions and potential clogging?

Thanks

9/10 distilled, 1/10 pentosin. Why? Secksy blue colour, kills all the little swimmers, prevents corrosion. Any antifreeze (well any toxic antifreeze) will do, pentosin is used for the nice colour.

it does have a nice color ;) is there a noticable performance gain using anti-freeze over Distilled water?

Not a performance gain, but actually a performance loss. Anti-freeze of any sort is detrimental to the properties of water that are favorable for the best performance. But the loss isn't huge, and it's generally necessary.

If a loop is isolated from sunlight and has no metals that are too anodically dissimilar from each other (copper, brass, silver - they all play fairly nicely together), there won't be any visible corrosion for very extended periods of time with pure distilled water, but there may be some slight organic growth. Add a little silver in the loop and you've pretty much made your loop into an environment that will not tolerate algae or organic growths.

hahah called up an audi dealer and they want $20 for a liter. Bahahaha

Anyone have pics of the red/pink?

not a bad price on the liter...

do what i did and call around to Audi mechanics in your area and just ask for a free-pour price.

a local shop here gave it to me for free as long as i brought in my own container... I only needed < a cup. so I went to the grocery store, bought a plastic water container, rinsed it out w/ distilled water and took it to the mechanic. he ended up filling it up for me. : )

i might call the dealer again but the girlfriend did some auto work for Chrysler in the past and has from friends in the local dealerships, ill see how it goes. BTW stormshadow, love the loop.

Just to let you know... in case you are interested...

Petra's is selling now Pentosin G11 Coolant Additive (Blue) - 2oz. for a very affordable price...

Check Here

I have a liter of that stuff under my kitchen sink.. if you are in the Bay Area I will free pour for ya. ;)

thanks for the offer but im actualy in michigan ;). Girlfriend has a friend that works on audis. Works for me :) Now to decided between red or blue...

Blue will probably have a better chance of showing up. My red is hardly noticeable at all (10% Pentosin, 90% dist), can only see a hint of it if there's a piece of white paper directly behind a tube.

I'm reading that this coolant doesn't cloud mcmaster tubing. Could someone do an experient for me and cut a piece of mcmaster tubing (2 inches) put it in a jar with a 80/20 mix of distilled water/coolant and tell us if after 7-10 days you see clouding in the tubing?
I've doing this with zerex and deionized water and it clouded the tubing after 10 days.

should help people who don't want to buy a whole liter and only use a bit of it.

edit: i just noticed they have xXxDieselxXx's pics up there, lol.

Lol Yeah.. I'm Pentosin addict.... BTW I have been testing Pento with several metals for already almost 3 weeks and all looks great I will post some pics later in a thread I have related to Pento....

Also I have my loop for 2 weeks with Pento and Masterkleer tubing and all looking still like new. No stains or funny stuff all nice blue (10% Pentosin, 90% dist).

So you think Pentosin would solve the problem of galvanic corrision between alumium and copper?

I think Pentosin would help, but it's better to avoid it if possible.

I have Pentosin and Mc Master Tubing for about 6 months now no problems.

This totally convinced me:
Copper pipe and aluminum piece after 2 years and 9 months in G11 (Pentosin) mixture on the left and pure distilled water on the right.

Also I'm running a research of my own

Here for more Details

Basically several factors drove me to Pentosin:

1- Blue Color (What ? I like it :D )
2- No Stain.
3- Works excellent with mixed metals.
4- Highly toxic (Probably Why JustIntoxicated said to avoid it if you can) this will ensure no living nasty swiming creatures in your loop.
5- Not too expensive... one bottle ($11) will last you all your WC life.
6- Will not clog the loop.
7- Performs very well with Acrilyc material. Will not degrade it as it could be the case with some coolants.

But Again I'm nOOb at water cooling.. but "I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night." :D

OK, thanks for the update. I figured I'd just ask you here rather than at XS, saves time. I think I'm going to be scoring me some Pentosin this weekend. :D

What I ment was I always avoid mixing metals where I can, however I think Pentosin should help prevent galvanic corrosion, I have not noticed any on my fillport (which is annodized and not really in the coolant anyways) lol. They did not make brass fillports when I got mine.

It is highly toxic, not sure where to dispose of my first attempt. (Got soap in some of the tubing from building the loop). I also mized it like 1/3rd to pentosin to water, which is overkill, but my temps are awesome so I don't care.

It wasen't cheap for me to find it though... $28 for a gallon was all my local dealerships had, and they did not mark it as Pentosin, but as Audi Coolant...Ouch!

For $28, they could have at least included a cap for the jub that does not leak (Have to keep Jug standing up or it slowly leaks out...
