so UW was released in 1992 and doom in 1993 right? one is a one of the best RPG and the other one of the best FPS, so the only comparison that i can make is the Engine. the graphics in both those games were really good, well for those pre OPEN-GL standards, in Doom u could run like hell, strafe and die and thats about it, but in UW you could run, strafe, jump, fly, hover, swim, look up and down. UW was a real pioneeeeer. i dont know why the heck i wrote this. I just want to see a UW remake !

Hell yeah man, UW was the dogs bollox(which means it was great!)

What I liked about UW was it was not too large a game world(although it was big).

Too many games/RPGs bleat on about "massive game world, open ended".
What this really means is "nothing to do other than walk around and be attacked by wave after wave of meaningless random encounters".

With UW, each level was lovingly made, and there was an excellent balance of puzzle solving, exploration, combat, etc. Also simple touches I liked such as...if there was some blood/bones on the floor there was likely to be a monsters lair nearby, and if there are torches on the wall, it was because someone lit them...

/ramble.

Ultima Underworld is still one of my favorite games ever. I wish it would be updated to run easily in XP. Even without a graphical upgrade I would love to play it again.

Underworld was a fun game to play, but doens't really directly compare to Doom. Both were first person games, with levels and enimies but that's about the end of it from how I see it. Doom, and Wolfenstien 3d before it are the grandfathers of the FPS genre of games. I think Ultima Underworld is more the grandfather of games like Oblivion.

Ultima, while liner and limited was still a much deeper game from a game play mechanic than FPS games are. I did enjoy playing through UW though, it had a good story and some real fun game play mechanics. Wonder if I still have a copy on disk somewhere... hrm. That's definitely the kind of game that VMWare Player + DOS virtual machine would do wonders for. I've done that to play through some of the old Lucas Arts adventure games :)

I love ultima underworld; it was the first RPG I played on the computer and then I ended up playing most of the ultima games. I put the UW mp3s into my Oblivion dungeon folder, and the combat theme for battle, so dungeons of Oblivion remind me of UW now.

Ultima underworld 2 was such an amazing game. I got involved in a remake of it based on the Unreal tourney 2k3 engine. didn't go very far but we had the beginning room and hallway up and running and looking very nice. shame it didn't pan out.

I´ve installed winMe in an old pc just to play that game, and yes, UW was definetively a great game
