I have 3 computers at my auto shop and I have been having problems with files being deleted, surfing the internet and looking at adult sites among other things.

My question is if there is such a program that records what they do on the computer. Also, I would like to know if that such problem, if one exists, can be installed remotely. What I was thinking about what to install it with my notebook since I have a wifi network here at the shop. I just dont want the employees noticing.

'
Thanks!

You could enable auditing of the machine. There are plenty of guides to help you out there.

Spector Pro sounds like the solution. Can I remotely install it ??? I didnt see anything saying that.....

Hmm...you probably have just a peer to peer network..my guess, hopefully you have WinXP..log in remotely using remote desktop..and install it. However...if it's your auto shop..why not just go in early, or come back in after hours. Or heck...it's your auto shop...employees shouldn't question what you're doing with your property anyways.

Spectre also has a great "Employee Computer Use Policy" guide on their site...might want to print that out and shove it in their faces.

Yes, they have to know their being recored or its against the law

i dont think you have to tell them they are being recorded. afterall, it is his property and he can do with it what he wants. i could be wrong on this, but im not 100% sure on it either.

it would be similar to working an a state with employment at will, they can hire and fire at anytime without notice and it is not against the law.

edit: i think a Computer Use Policy would still be beneficial as a CYA, just in case any lawsuits comeby for any possible terminations.

Definately print some kind of use policy.

Monitoring computer use, I do believe the law varies by state. In Alabama, you don't need to notify them that they're being recorded, and you can have hidden cameras monitoring employees without their knowledge, within reason (no bathrooms, etc).

I think you'd be better off getting WebSense or something like it. The morale in your shop might drop if the employees know you're watching what they do. Also, what if you find out your best employee is the one surfing the porn. You might lose trust in them, and that is not something anyone wants to do.

I think you're way better off removing the temptation for your employees. That way you get what you want, and the employees still get to keep their privacy.

You bring up a very great point, but sometimes it is needed
People should know that it is a work place and stuff that like should not been done.

in order for this to be legal, the recordings must be made as a normal part of operating your business. this generally means you need to have a policy stating that you may be monitoring email, web browsing, etc. the employees need to be made aware of the policy- usually you will want to collect a signed sheet from each employee stating that they've read and understand it.

if you DON'T do that then here's what happens: you spy on them, find the culprit and fire them. they sue you for terminating their employment and you lose your auto shop because what you did was illegal. if somehow, where you live it is legal to fire people on the spot with no reason then you can probably get away with this, but i would strongly recommend you do NOT mention that you spied on them and that is the reason they are being fired.

to clarify one comment made earlier. this equipment is not the OP's equipment. it belongs to the business.

here's a different way to look at the situation. if someone is misusing the computers, and you don't have any sort of policy and/or protections in place then it is YOUR fault, not he employee's.

another option would be to even prevent the employees to even go to those types of sites with linux and run smoothwall.

Or just get a Cisco Pix or another type of hardware firewall

Again, varies from state to state. Do you really have to let your employee know you have a camera over the register when you fire them for swiping a $20?

I can fire someone for taking too many water breaks, it all depends on the laws in your state.

Redirect all porn sites that they visit to this:

Give them limted control by making them access only their user account..

Doesn't solve the issue of them watching porn. Websense or somethign similar is what is needed here.
