well.......a close buddy of mine that i havent seen in a long time, (he moved out of state) came by to pay me a visit......he said he played WoW.

i saw him play for a bit i thought the game was pretty decent, anyways, i am thinking of making an account, but if i remember correctly, the game came out about a year ago and i am not sure how much longer it will still be popular....and i want to play enough to fully experience the game...

so wat are some of ur oppinions of how much longer the game will the game still be popular?

Well Starcraft came out in 1998/1999 is still very popular "mostly in Korea". WoW might last very very long.

Dont believe it.. lol WoW will be popular until another game that is better and bigger comes out. Probably 2-3 years until its dead.

how are u so sure?

It won't be dead for a long time, but I see the uberpopularity ending.

Gothic games are what's next. FINALLY.

(not Gothic the game, gothic the noun.)

I'd guess that WoW's going to be the big thing for another couple of years, and will continue to exist for a good while after that.

I'd try it for awhile without the commitment if you can. some neat things about it but the fighting/gameplay and other things are so
gay.gif
..I uninstalled after a week and went onto guild wars. but to each iz own

EQ came out in 1999, and its still one the most played MMO's, i doubt WoW would fall off the chart any time soon

everything said in here so far...plus the expansion coming out later this year (2 new races, new zones, quests, items, mobs, etc). new servers are always being added, and they add new content/fix things in every major patch. i'd say it will be around for awhile...

QFT. It'll be around for a while by the looks of things.

WoW is hard to judge. So far its totally demolished every pre-conception thats are ususally stuck to MMOs. Generally the life span of an mmo is 2-4 years, peaking at the 2 year mark. Its been almost 2 years since WoW's release and I doubt we have even seen the peak yet. 6.5 million active subscribers is very compelling. Its been a steady upward climb for about the past year. I think that this game will have at least one more expansion after Burning Crusade and a life span of 4-6 years. I think we'll start to see subscribers drop off after the 4 year mark. It will never go completely away, but after 4 years people will stop playing, and Blizzard will start taking servers off-line and moving players to other servers.

hmmm will "open the flood gates" then ....am I the only one who thinks the fighting needs to be more challenging? this "easily walk past monster after monster just don't invade their space/line of sight", then the "pull one guy away, kill them go after another" bs? YAWN! its fun for a bit but so repetative and too simplistic. thankfully there are roaming monsters to keep ya on your toes but the areas for quests made me uninstall it. it takes a lot of work getting to an area for a quest, then kill "x" amount of monsters to only die near the end then have to do it all over again, not to mention someone else coming into your area and screwing things up? uG!

some mmorpg's and the constant running for 5+ minutes is something I could never see how ppl stomach. final fantasy is horrible for that. wow can have that too...guild wars has smarter monsters and other aspects IMO but I mostly wanna play quests alone and have it tough as (_x_), not the social aspect these games perpetuate....then add the monthly fee? maybe I'm just not a mmorpg'er

If you don't want to play with people there's no point in playing an MMO. Go play a single player game.

For me, I enjoy learning new encounters. We're working on Nef and Yauj, Lord Kri and Vem

if there was an idiot filter I think I might. I have but the challenges finding people worthy outweigh...

Its fun.. but.. after playing since early beta.. im bored. Ive been there done that. Thats not to say I didnt give the game a ton of my time. I canceled my account yesterday.

Now I hope the supposed patch tomorrow for Titan Quest will keep me satisfied for my gaming addiction needs :)

it's called the ignore list. There's actually a complete guild on my server who's made it on my ignore list :p

I wish going to 60 once was enough for me.. i did it 3 times.. and have friends that have 5+ lvl 60 chars.. Addicting game for sure. Make sure you are ready to put life on hold if you wish to reach the end game :)

6 million subscribers paying $15.00 a month amounts to...........$90,000,000 each month.

The only way this will die is when some other MMORPG thats Beter than it comes out. be it 1 year or 10 years.

^^ ~6 mill bought it. would be interesting to see how many are actually playing/paying each month

6 mill SUBSCRIBERS.........and u should stop talking trash man.....i got guild wars....and if u think that game has "smart monsters" u suck...u dont liek peopel in WoW?.. i stopped playing guild wars cause its FULL of noobs, it got to the point where i got disgusted doing anything without my guild or friends........i saw my bud playing WoW, theirs a lot more to it then guild wars has to offer.......but i wish the pvp in WoW were more strategic..but w/e

...and $15 a month is not a big deal at all, i waste more money on stuff i throw away after a few days

5.5M parents bought it for their kids leaving about 500,000 older people spanned across their server charts.

World of Warcraft: 13? Can't spell? Got mommy and daddys credit card? Cmon in!

In my experience, the WoW population is MUCH more widespread. In my current guild of 64, I'd say the lowest age is 18ish and oldest is around 40 (that I know of)

Same thing, I just don't like the idea of spending hours of my life farming for gold an other items after I make it to 60.

You can take this for whatever you think it's worth; I honestly admit that I'm pretty bitter at Blizzard and World of Warcraft. I quit cold turkey about a month ago (deleted my characters so I wouldn't have any reason to come back.) I will give any potential new players this warning - WoW is at its prime from level 1 to level 59...that's when you're levelling up and continually exploring new areas, encountering new enemies, and enjoying new content. It's a pretty casual experience for this period, even rewarding you if you take breaks from the game with "rested" XP. That is to say that while you are logged out at an inn or in town, your character is resting up (to a certain extent) and when you log in, you'll gain extra experience for your character.

Once you hit level 60, the game is very much a grind aimed at more hardcore players. Between raiding (which, in my opinion, is a horrible, stressful experience) with 39 other people and the game's very unforgiving PvP system, you should expect to essentially be punished if you have a casual play style.

Raiding...first of all. As I understand it, the other raid instances are a bit better because Molten Core was the first instance Blizzard created but MC is tedious and slow. The fights aren't very strategic and many classes are essentially reduced to using the same skills over and over and over. Then add in the fact that if you're doing MC, you're going to be doing it on a set weekly schedule for at least a month to get your full set or whatever...which means for most guilds that you'll be signing up to be in-game at a certain place at a certain time ready to go. Don't be late for work...err...gaming, most employers...woops...guild leaders don't appreciate it, and might dock your pay...err..."DkP." Don't let your job...raid...performance slack off while you're working...playing either, lest you be yelled at by your supervisor over Ventrilo! (Granted, not all guilds do this...I ended up leaving my guild because the raid leader yelled a lot and berated people.)

And be warned...if you choose to play any class with a healing ability...that's what you'll be doing. I played a shaman...Molten Core was essentially for me a 3-4 hour long game of whack-a-mole, except instead of whacking moles I was clicking on little green bars and spamming my heal button until they were good or until someone else needed healing more. It was *VERY* tedious and boring. I was only able to stand two MC runs before I finally said "screw it" and decided not to bother.

But there's the rub...if you don't bother...you don't get to progress in the game. And if you like PvP...well, don't expect to stand a chance against the players who have all the best raid gear...which means that on all but the newest servers, you essentially don't stand a chance. The damage-capable classes, when fully outfitted in all the best gear, will absolutely destroy anyone in more normal and accessible equipment. PvP very quickly becomes a game of who reacts first since many classes are able to cause enough damage to kill players in the span of a few seconds. VERY frustrating in my opinion.

Since I'm stationed overseas in Europe, I and many of my friends were playing with people in the states but were essentially 6 hours ahead of everyone else. I have a few friends who have adjusted their daily sleeping habits and schedule to accomodate meeting their guild's raiding schedule...i.e., when they get home from work at around 5:30 PM local, they go straight to bed. They get up at around 1 in the morning and spend all night raiding, then go to work. When they get off work they go back to bed again and the cycle continues. Not exactly healthy, if you ask me.

And the PvP ranking system is pretty brutal. Basically, as you score more kills and participate in the instanced PvP battlegrounds, you gain "honor" points. In order to reach higher ranks you basically are competing with other players, which means that you're competing with the kids who live with their parents and have no jobs, and are playing nearly every waking minute. As you strive for the higher ranks, you need to invest more time each week to make progress. For the very top ranks, this means on many servers that in order to make progress you'll be playing for many hours every day. You also can't take breaks from it; rank decays at a fairly high rate. I was striving for rank 10 and was able to achieve rank 8; unfortunately at that point the US Air Force deployed me to Baghdad for four months. During this time I basically lost two-three months of effort made to progress. To reach the very highest rank many players either share their account info in order to get multiple people to play the same character 24/7 or spend upwards of 15 hours a day over a period of more than a month. If real life events interfere, all that time is lost very quickly - I've even heard the story of one player who was almost to his goal when he got into a car accident and suffered head trauma. When he was finally well enough to play again, he had deranked significantly and lost months of hard work...which is exactly what it was. The hours and hours of playing are spent in the same three battlegrounds, usually in a team of other players who are fully geared out and essentially farming pick up group players for points. People have lost wives, husbands, friends, and jobs over this stuff, folks...it's brutal and unhealthy.

So in short, the game is fun until you hit 60...then, quite frankly, it gets tedious and unhealthy since it requires massive amounts of time and commitment to make any progress. Put quite simply, I recommend you stay away if you're a new player...though again I fully admit I'm quite bitter. I've only got a few months left being stationed over here in Italy and while I know it's ultimately my fault, I look back at the last year with regret knowing that instead of getting out and exploring Europe I was spending my weekends in my dorm room playing WoW for hours on end. That time could have been sooo much more productive. :(

A lot of what daggah says is true, a lot of it depends on you the player and things you like. A lot of the end game raiding experience i think depends on who you are playing with. Sometimes i love going because we have all the good and fun people and thigns work wonderfull, other times morons are in charge and will pull groups without telling anyone and laugh when we all die....and then do it again.

If you dont have a good group of people to play with end game content can suck big time.

make sure you check out some more pubs before you leave daggah!

it all depends on who you raid with. My guild is pushing end game progression and we're mostly 21+ with either families or jobs or both. I couldn't stand to raid with kids under 18.. that would make me want to quit wow too.
