Hi guys,

I just got a DS Lite and its great but I have a couple of questions to ask.

1) Is it normal for the DS to want to shut down after any and all changes to settings you make?

2) If you want to quit picochat the console will want to shut down??

3) If you quit download and play the console will want to shut down?? Also how does download and play work? Do you need to be in specific places for it to work or will it just work over wifi connection to the internet regardless of where you are?

I bought the DS with Metroid Prime Hunters and its very neat. I also have Castlevania:DoS

I am planning on buying the following:

Electroplankton
Brain Training (prof Kawashimas)
Animal Crossing
Meteos

What do you guys think of that list? May add SMB or M64 to that list...but not sure yet. The kind of games I want the play on the DS are not the sort of games that you would find on a living room console...i dont care for the need for speeds etc...i want something a little different. Has anyone played Polarium? Is it any good?

Any help and pointers would be much appreciated. TIA

Syphon

I was wondering the same thing about the shutting down. It seems like you have to "reboot" if you make any changes.

As for games. I have
Kirby: Canvas Curse which is totally awesome. It takes some multitasking and quick thinking here and there and is fun and dare I say "cute".

New Super Mario Bros. is really good if you are into the side scrolling 2D mario games. It has some new features and cool things that keep it fresh, even for a side scroller.

Sonic Rush brings sonic back to its roots. It's a very fast paced game that can be difficult at times requiring memorization and reaction time. If you never liked sonic before you won't like this, but if you were an old school fanatic, this game is for you.

Advance Wars: Dual strike is a strategy game with lots of depth and challenges. If you are into planning and turned based strategic action this is the flagship DS title for this type of gameplay. (though I think there are only 1 or 2 other contenders)

Games you mentioned:
Meteos looks awesome, but I think it's really hard to find. Advanced Wars was a pain to find as well.

Electroplankton looked good but you can't save anything and seemed to be something that would die out pretty quick. On that note, the brain age games and nintendogs seemed to follow the same pattern for me. I would think all of those types of games, while fun, would get old really quickly.

Recommendations:
Mario and Luigi: partners in time
Mario Kart
Tetris DS

I think brain age does save things as you go, because its charts your progress right? Plus it would be great as a bit of a mental workout. I am a programmer/engineer/consultant by trade, so my brain gets stuck into a certain way of thinking about things. Brain Age may help to develop my thinking in different ways.

So does electroplankton not have levels/a structured playing system? Do you just play until you are bored then the next time you come to play you just start again, but you can just do different things everytime you play?

Also, isnt Nintendogs a game that saves progress too? Surely your dog changes and develops as you play with him/her/it?

What do people think of Animal Crossing? I'm after a new sort of gaming experience. I play FPS's, racers etc on my PC and XBox/360 etc...so I am looking for something a bit different. This is my first time playing Castlevania, and its quite interesting, but I am finding it a bit of a learning curve, trying to find souls etc, making new weapons and what not. Its cool...much more my style of RPG than say Oblivion or something like that. I dunno...difficult to explain.

Any other tips or suggestions? I have Advance Wars for my GBA so i will just continue to play that, though i never took to it like others have. I also have metroid fusion and zerio mission which are great. I need to start Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars again too, due to a bug in the game I cannot progress past where I am now without starting over....

TIA Syphon...

Yeah, the DS needs to reboot like Windows 98, drives me nuts.

For DoS: The best way to capture souls is to increase your luck stat. The higher the better. A good way to start is finding a room with ghost dancers and killing them over and over and over and over: their soul is an enchant soul, which gives you +2 luck per level, so you can max out at 18.

You want to capture souls because some secret areas are inaccesible w/o a specific soul. You also need them to upgrade your weapons. Finally, if you have all the souls you can get an item that boosts all your stats and gives you infinite mana.

Sonic Rush is a great game, as is New Super Mario Brothers. It's odd playing such old school games on the same console, since back in the day they were the big competing franchises. But I'm not complaining, they're great games. You'll also have to check out Mario Kart if you haven't...

The rebooting thing is normal, it's not so bad. Grats on the DS, I know I love mine :)

I honestly think sonic rush is really overrated - it reeks of bad design.

Using both screens as one is kind of contrary to the nature of the game, as you're usually moving horizontally, not vertically.

They also made it too fast. The game depends a lot on memorizing levels. They tried to even it up by giving you that little dash attack thing, but most of the time, if you don't know an enemy is coming, you have no chance.

LOL, you know it's a Sonic game, right? Back in the days of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, my TV would actually have problems catching up during some of the faster levels.

I enjoy the speed of the game. You really don't know when the bad guys are comming the first time, that's why you have to memorize the levels. It's like a racing game, you can't just go in and get 1st place on every race without knowing the track. It makes the game more enjoyable and keeps me from beating it in 1 day. I like the fact that there is a little depth and learning curve to getting the higher ratings. You can do a lot of tricks at the appropriate times and then try and keep your boost meter up and running longer to get through the level faster. The boost will help you kill the bad guys as you blast through which will also help with your boost meter. It's a good balance and gives you another reason to go back and play the levels you have already beaten.

Ok, done a little digging on Electroplankton. Sounds interesting, but TOTALLY lame that you can't save anything. So that's off my list to be honest.

Going to pick up: Meteos and Brain Age for sure.

Still waiting to hear what people make of Animal Crossing...I'm not really into mario sort of games, but i think thats because i have never really spent the time playing these sort of games.

I haven't really enjoyed a sonic game since S3&K and while rush may not be great it is WORLDS better than any other sonic games that have come out in the past few years. The levels are fast and that does it for me. The bosses are a bit lack luster (I don't enjoy battleing them anyway) and I hate the emerald stages but it is still enjoyable if you liked sonics 1-3&K :)

Animal Crossing: Wild World is a beautiful thing IF you're into non-competitive, minimal-stress, daily, small-dose gameplay. I've let my town go the last couple of months, but for a while I was obsessed with AC:WW. If you want to plant trees and flowers, go fishing, catch insects, experience in-game holidays, listen to silly chitchat from your animal neighbors, pay off a mortgage, expand and decorate a virtual house, etc. then AC:WW is great. Just be aware that it barely qualifies as a "game" in the traditional sense of the word, and is more of a toy, much like The Sims or Nintendogs (though in both of those games it is much easier to define success).

I was never really big into Mario platformers, either, but I was addicted to my bro's copy of New SMB until yesterday when I finally got 100% completion. For someone who sucks at it like me, it was a real challenge. I think I died 200-250 times (maybe more) to finally get everything. This is a big thumbs up from someone who always used to be the guy who watched others play the game.

Suggestion: don't take Elektroplankton off your list. By far one of the most original titles I've ever had the pleasure of owning. If I really want to save my work, the DS DOES have a headphone out plug (line-in into any sound input/sound card = recording).

Animal Crossing is a portable version of a heroin addiction, and either Brain game is a really easy way to get to know the rest of your family ;)

electroplankton is fun for a while... but since there is nothing new to look for , it doesnt feel like a game... but like a toy

gah.. i bit. i ordered one, too. i got metriod, tetris, atari classics, and the wi-fi connector.

I tried to hold off, telling myself that i dont use my GBA and that it's just a waste of money/time. I tried with all my might...but then I caved too. Glad that I did now. Going to order Meteos and Brain age for sure. Just not sure what other 1 or 2 games to get...still umm'ing and ahhh'ing over Animal Crossing, just not sure it's my thing BUT then I am looking for something a bit different. Going to have to look around a bit more before I bite.

Castlevania is great...though I am having a hard time getting my "luck" up so its a bit hit and miss when it comes to collecting souls which is sometimes annoying. But overall, great game.

Dumb question, could probably google it...but does anyone know if there is a Harvest Moon for the DS?

I think there is one due for release, it's certainly not out in the UK yet...possibly is in the US?

Harvest Moon DS is supposed to be hitting the US in August and the EU in September. It's been available for quite a while in Japan, of course..

Animal Crossing is nice, but a Harvest Moon would OWN.

I just bought my DS Lite on Friday along with:

New Super Mario Brothers
Brain Age
Mario Kart DS

So far I love all 3. Brain age is real fun and unique, but I find myself only being able to play it in 15 minute spurts a few times a day. The other two have a TON of gameplay and the wi-fi Mario Kart rules. Just start a new game, wait for 3 other people, and within a minute or two you are playing online against other people. I also plan on getting Tetris, now that I see how awesome the online play is.

I wouldnt worry about getting a ton of games to start out, get 2 or 3 and then hold off for a while. It looks like a lot of great games are coming out soon. Star fox, 2 Final Fantasy games, Zelda, and a lot more.

Also, I dont mean to threadjack, but I never had a GBA, so are there any GBA games that are a must have? Are there any worth getting over future DS games?

Metroid Fusion and Metroid Zero Mission are both great. Really good games. Usual metroid goodness if you ask me.

Bags of others too...advance wars 2 if you are into that sort of thing. Trying to think of others,

Four Swords?

All the Zeldas on GBA are good.
