Was just curious as to what was everyone's favorite desktop environment. Mine is KDE.

I'm using mostly KDE due to the abundance of apps specifically for it. The performance seems to have improved dramatically in the last few versions, it's nowhere near the resource hog it used to be.

gnome has been my favorite for a long time, not just because of the visual appeal but I also work much more efficiently under gnome.

What DE I use depends on the hardware. On my main rig, it's KDE all the way. :D On my ancient laptop, I've tried XFCE but felt completely lost so currently I use Gnome. However I'll probably be doing a wipe/reinstall on that hunk o' junk and putting Ubuntu Dapper on it. I haven't decided on if I'll stick with Gnome yet or if I'll try XFCE again. Even though I felt completely lost; when I tried XFCE on it, it just flew right along (vs. Gnome's painful crawling).

I use mostly Gnome because It doesn't use as much memory... KDE looks cooler but I like Gnome :D :D

I used KDE for a few years, but within the last few months, I've switched all of my systems except one to Gnome. While I do occasionally miss KDE's ability to configure any conceivable thing, Gnome comes close enough to my ideal setup that it doesnt bother me. I use a combination of Gnome and KDE apps, and haven't really had any problems with the KDE stuff on Gnome.

KDE, for the way it does or can be made to do the things I want it to, with rather less fuss than gnome. This might sound contrary to popular opinion, but is probably caused by my preferences coinciding with that of the KDE people.
Besides, gnome really feels like a collection of unrelated apps to me. KDE has a lot of nifty touches, like using an embedded version of their text editor [1] to preview text files in their browser, or the ability to store shortcuts in the open/save dialog on a systemwide or per-app basis. Don't underestimate how practical that can be, especially combined with something like ftp or fish [2] (or nfs, but that's more transparent).

[1] There is an app available that lets you embed a gvim-window, if you prefer vi. Personally, I'm fond of kate.
[2] Fish connects to a remote system, using ssh (or an uploaded perl script, IIRC) to do filesystem manipulation, and scp to get and put files, while looking like a normal file system to KDE apps. Quite useful. (Not actually a KDE invention, but they've put it to good use.)

Gnome rocks.

Oh and I also develop my own apps for GTK+/Gnome, hence why I like it more than KDE. ;)

as far as desktop environments go i prefer kde. but i generally stray away from DEs and opt for a lightweight window manager like fluxbox. i've probably been using fluxbox exclusively for about 4 years, does everything i need and it's fast as hell

KDE myself, though I use both depending on where I am.

I used fluxbox for about half a year, and it was certainly quite speedy, but computers are so fast these days that it didn't really make much of a difference when I moved to KDE. I also really do appreciate all the features in a full DE.

If I do use a full DE, I use KDE because I like its feel. Seems a lot more intuitive than GNOME, and better aesthetics too.

Generally I use window managers, only because I like simple and I never use half the stuff incorporated into a full DE.

i like KDE ,

still not good enought for my liking (look wise) , but maybe KDE5 will finally have a
major overhaul and look halfway decent

I believe you mean KDE4. It does sound like it has a lot of potential.

Gnome is my main desktop environment, but I do like XFCE on occasion. I can't stand KDE though.

KDE looks too much like a kid's desktop environment, in my opinion, and i could never find a theme for it that i liked.

So my vote and love go out to Gnome! :)

Occasionally, when i'm feeling nostalgic, i'll boot into Window Maker.

i voted KDE.
goooooooo KDE

you should've included blackbox/fluxbox though as they seem pretty popular.

I use Gnome but I'm thinking of switching to something else because I find it a bit slow on a P4 1.8ghz, 512mb ram and GF4 Ti 4200.

I prefer Fluxbox or Enlightenment ... as stated above: when I use a GUI :) Text mode FTW.

Other. I've got two I love: Blackbox and Enlightenment, depending on the machine's purpose and hardware.

Well, I voted gnome because I've used it for quite a while. This poll got me interested in some of the other options out there, though. I'm playing with Xfce on a Xen virtual machine now, and I really like it. I'm considering switching the main workstation to it.

On a side note, nVidia really needs to release drivers that work with Xen. Software rendering is getting old.

Hey, that Enlightenment looks prety good. Think I'll switch from Gnome and try that out. Is it lower on resources compared to Gnome?

yeah enlightenment is very lightweight, but yet nicely featured. I love it. It's definitely light on resources...not as light as the uber-lightweight blackbox, but light enough to run quickly on pretty much any machine. MUCH lighter than a full DE like Gnome or KDE.

I tried installing Enlightenment with the synaptic package manager on Ubuntu 5.10 and at first it warns me that it could be a security risk and then it came up with some error when I tried to get it to download and install. Can't remember exactly what the error was now. I'll have to try again later.

OK, I've got Enlightenment installed and running now I just need to figure out how to get all my apps showing. I don't like its default font - too fuzzy looking.

Got rid of Enlightenment and am now using XGL. Who needs Vista when you've already got XGL? :)
