What is a cheap way to give a computer access to about 10 IDE harddrives? I have a 3U case, but it won't hold 10 harddrives in it. I've considered enclosures, but they seem expensive ( if someone knows otherwise please tell me ). How would you guys hook 10 ide harddrives up to a computer?

I'm mostly concerned with how to connect 10 IDE hard drives to a computer. Even if I created a seperate fileserver to connect them to, I'd still have that problem. What are my options? I considered getting pci IDE cards, but theres no way that I can fit 10 hard drives in one computer case.

The nature of the question really has to do with what you mean by access to 10 drives. Are you trying to give your machine a certain amount of storage space? Why do you need to access these specific drives? In any case, yes you can fit 10 drives in one computer case. I have a $25 case and with 3 5.25" drive bay removable trays I could do it in mine.

Meh. Why'd they use 4 seperate cables when a single multilane cable would've done? And the connections are inconsistent - there are two 5-port PMs and two single-drive connections. The drives are rather difficult to eject (well, I guess that has pros and cons...). Only 3 70mm fans for the whole thing? Wow.

Extensive review of this, from a mac user's perspective.

darn u mage!! making me see all these sexy storage stuff. im gonna be spending a ton of money for all the stuff i want. probably a good thing i dont make a lot more than i do, because i'll be throwing all my money at stuff like this. :p

... I didn't think much of that enclosure. Supermicro 5-in-3s are the best enclosure I've found (although I'll be the first to admit they have faults - loud, underproductive fan, for one...) and the only one I'll explicitly recommend. Others get a "well, if it fits your purpose, go ahead", but that's about it ;)

There's a question here that hasn't been answered yet. What do you need to do with 10 drives. Most likely there are better ways than stuffing 10 drives in a case.

Like, for example? Most people want all their data online all at the same time, so it makes sense to have all the disks plugged in all at once.

How would you go about it? Purchase a 2nd PSU, as well as some RAID controller cards. Like SATA Controller, or IDE controller to allow you to add on more cards to your system. You CAN fit 10 drives easily into a Antec SOHO II performance case. But it would need some drive mounts. Aside from that, there are some cases that will hold more than that.

Noone has really been answering the question, people are giving other suggestions, or just wanting to know what's with the need for the space...

Very true.. but you see a lot of people come in and say 'i have 10 x 4g scsi 80 pin drives, what can i do with them.' Just trying to find out what the OP's reason is. :)
