I think Apple is doing a fine job with these ads:

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8726680667826036162&q=apple+ad
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2572298761237795497&q=apple+ad

To the average joe these ads are a perfect. It doesn't really sell any specific Apple product in particular although we understand it's PC related and targets Microsoft OS. So Apple have now decided to further take advantage of some misconceptions like the plug and play capabilities and the drivers problems a normal PC user would have... So where's the bad in all this? Simply put, it's all BS. They now basically have the same platform (Intel), they cost more, their hardware is limited to what Apple wants you to have, less softwares, less games, expandability...?

What about that ad about the virus/spyware/crash? Wow, this whole topic is too complex to even begin a discussion here but Mr. Apple should hope that one day his OS has 100000000 spywares/virus written for it has it's a sign that everyone uses it. Remove the "cool" factor of buying a MAC or even an iPod and what's left? Almost nothing. Because you can find better for less. I run Gentoo Linux but I am not blind and can see the many advantages of the PC platform + Windows for it's amazing support for drivers, manufacturers and the huge amount of softwares/games out there.

Funny ads though. I think Mr. Apple started smoking weed again...

Yeah, I don't like them. They're good for people who are afraid of electronics and think computers are out to get them. They insult people like us. I understand why they've made 'em, though. Apple's products are user-friendly and trendy. I hate most of their stuff. Only the lazy, rich, and vulnerable to the Jones Effect buy from Apple. That or people who understand that Apple has acquired almost every good audio/video software company.

The dim-witted Windows PC vs the snobbish overpriced Mac PC. I agree, the commercials are full of lies and FUD. Now I don't want either. :p

Maybe there would be more Linux user, if Linux had TV commercials. Commercials with cute baby penguins. That would be nice. :)

yeah really.

I hate how they use "PC" - wwow, funny, apple, um, your using a "PC" processor in your system now.... what about Linux, i dont see you bashing that and linux runs on "PC's"

what next

OH, and now your trying to let windows run on your hardware... must be a reason for that - not enough sales on OS X... yeah thought so again.

Apple used to have ads that touted VirtualPC to run PC apps. Apple would compare a Mac that could run native apps and Windows apps, which would be used to jab at the PC for not running Mac apps. At the time Apple was suing the pants off Mac emulator makers. That of course was never mentioned in the ads.

I bring this up because it's probably going to happen again. And again Apple will probably fail to mention that they won't allow OS X to run on anything other than Apple hardware.

If you expect advertising from any company to be a truthful representation of their product you are a severely misguided individual.

This should really come as no surprise, everyone does it.

Advertising rhetoric aside, there are compelling reasons to use both platforms.

jimmyb you're right, most company will not be totaly honest and even distort the truth but my point is that these ads are very funny (offensive?) to someone who knows what's what.

To me it's insulting, but hey, Apple is doing a great job creating a buzz...

You know... some of you guys with your jabs are no better than Apple is. Elitest attitudes goes both ways.

Never go into advertising as it seems you don't get it. Why bash on Linux when the targeted commerical audience probably hasn't even heard or have zero intention of using such an OS.

This is nothing new at all. Apple has been bashing Wintel and x86 hardware for as long as I could remember. It is obvious its all marketing towards the average consumer.

I do agree some of the commercials are a bit far fetched.

Did you notice one of the newer ones, where it goes something like this;

[Young guy]: Hello, I'm a Mac
[Old Guy]: Hello, I'm a PC
[Young guy]: And I'm a PC too

Then he goes on to talk about how he can run windows too. Remember, Apple sells you a computer, not just an operating system.

Anyway, I rather like these ads. I'm not seeing the elitism that you guys are talking about. This thread, on the other hand, is pretty full of it.

i do understand marketing, and i know who it is aimed at, that was just my weak addition to the argument :)

just amusing how they bashed x86 hardware for so long, and now they use it

DDR / SATA / PCIe / x86 cpu's et cetera, and people say PC's copy apple....

it's funny but whenever I use my RAZR I think of Apple. I mean if Apple made a mobile phone the RAZR would have to be it. All style no substance.

Oh no the flames are coming!

(random tought)

I would agree hardware wise but the phone interface for Motorola phones is just plain horrid. Replace it with something glitzy like Sony Ericsson's OS then you'll have an Apple phone :)

Yea it is amusing. You know what would be even more amusing? When Apple products start shipping with Windows. Very slim chance I know but you never know. They did surprise us with the Intel switch :p

Like overclockers.com says, "The people who are most vulnerable are the ones who think they're invincible."... or something like that lol.
I like alot of Apple products, but yeah... those ads are stupid.

Yup, to those in the know, those ads are ridiculous, but it's great advertising, and Apple should give their ad agency a raise.

Not to mention it has the guy from dodgeball ;)

All ads are stupid - they target the weak willed who are drawn towards a product by emotional pleas, poorly reasoned argumentation and simple repetition. These are perfect examples... "Macs are 'better", "ZOMG PCs always need to reboot!!!".

On a slightly unrelated note - here's a copy of the orignal 1984 Mac ad -
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-715862862672743260&q=apple+1984
...and here's one where the chick wearing an iPod...
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8565700130896722951&q=apple+ad

Not to mention that the Windows guy looks like a fat Bill Gates...

Well looks like Bill if you're Steve Jobs and so obsessed with killing Microsoft that you see Bill everywhere...

I don't see how suggesting that trying to sell your hardware because it can run windows too, has anything to do with killing microsoft. Sounds like killing other pc manufacturer's? Not a big chance there as most companies like HP, Dell, etc all have huge corporate accounts. The company I work for has thousands of HP's, its all we buy. Most likely all we will ever buy given the way this place is.

The interoperability ads are funny. It took 3 months for the software update for my wife's Mac that allowed it communicate with her cell phone. Showed up at the door with software for my PC. It was really hard to put the CD in and plug the phone in to get it working on my PC.

I set up a login on my PC for my wife to use while she waited for the Mac software update. She felt a bit put out.

Yes they sell you a computer... that's what you think they sell you, but in reality they are trying to sell you an IDEA because what's cool about the MAC is the IDEA you're owning something different (hence: think different). Nobody here think they're Elite, if you feel they are maybe you just think different and that's cool.

Please. Check out Anandtech's article entitled "A Month with a Mac: A Die-Hard PC user perspecitive". There are still plenty of really nice reasons to use a mac, putting aside the elegance or coolness factor.

I do like being cool though. :)

To me it's insulting

If you find it insulting, you need a life away from a computer.

All style no substance.

Something tells me you haven't used one of the machines for a reasonable period of time.

And seriously, ads aside (since marketing is marketing) if people are really going to point out weaknesses of the platform, it's just as easy to do as many for the PC, if not more. It might be more productive of this thread to lay off the bashing and have a good conversation headed for discovery, but I guess that wouldn't be nearly as much fun.

^^ i would prefer if you did not use the term PC, but be more specific - Windows / Linux / Unix for x86....

i mean, since MACs are using "PC" hardware now :) "PC's" must be doing something right.....

I think everyone understands. It's less complicated that way anyway.

And it's not that "PCs are doing something right." Doesn't matter what chip it's using -- it's still a different platform. Besides, explain to me why PCs aren't using EFI :) Seems like Apple's doing something right there.

i like how the apple ads talk about fun and then they just dance around the whole gaming issue

Which isn't an issue to the majority of the market. Contrary to popular belief, Internet forum users don't make up 95% of the market, and the number of hardcore gamers that don't use forums is probably even smaller. What gaming the Mac platform does have is actually pretty good, and for the few that you can't, there's always Bootcamp. Apparently it suits a lot of people fine if they can use a technically superior OS 95% of the time and that 5% boot up to something else for other apps that they require.

and if i wanted to run bootcamp it means i need to spend even more money just to get the windows os to play the games... besides who said anything about "hardcore" gamers, what about the casual and light gamers?

Assuming you're probably one of the many people who DIDN'T buy it, why is this an issue? In fact, even if you did buy it, again, why is it an issue? Install the copy you have.

Why do you think casual and light gamers would have a problem? Most of them are generally happy with their copy of the Sims.

HEY, i have no problems with you being an apple fan!!!, but personal attacks are uncalled for and are a true sign of a noob... if you MUST know i legitimately own every copy of windows i run, even Windows ME

the issue i was talking about was if i just spent a large amount of money on a computer and wanted to run a game not only would i have to spend the $50+ for the game i would have to spend $100+ for another piece of software to make it run

That wasn't a personal attack at all. I didn't buy my first copy of Windows XP, and the only reason that my second copy is legal is because I acquired it through my university. Most people I know don't legally own Windows. I don't know why the hell you thought that was a personal attack. If you're so quick to call me a noob, maybe it's YOU who is making a personal attack.

And I understand your point. But you're already spending money on Windows (albeit indirectly) even when you buy another machine, so what's the big deal?

Edit: Hopefully you wouldn't be buying Windows for one game.

C'mon people Macs have advantages as well as computers running Windows or Linux.

1.Macs are great with photo/video editing (Windows and Linux can do it great also, Just as well)
2.Macs are made to be stylish. like something you would buy say your daughter that wants a pretty computer. (PC's can have any case, heck im sure you can even find someone selling a mac case or a knockoff)
3.as far as browsing the internet all 3 OS's do it fine.
4.Mac does have some good products (they are a better hardware company) say Ipod? those nice LCD's with a camera in it. They were the first to use usb. theres more find it yourself.
5.this is one thing Mac cannot beat. you can upgrade your PC.
6.another thing Mac cannot beat, Price!
7.Gaming, nothing is written for macs (by that i mean very little). also related to #5.
8.Viruses. Mac i know there are some. Windows tons (why do you think? maybe because its the most used OS), linux few.
9.support for devices. though i havent used macs enough dealing with useing devices from what ive heard is Mac supports mostly just what they sell. Windows i know has great support! linux is close behind windows.
10. i think yall who bash a singular OS are dipshits. they all have their strong points and weak points.
11.Personally i will never buy a mac unless they become more like a pc in alot of features....oh wait then i wont need one.
12.stop attacking macs commercials its their right to try and sell a damn product. they have made great commercials i dont agree with it all but HEY! they make me laugh
13. for an unexperianced user Mac or windows is great! linux is a harder OS to learn how to use.
14.linux is unconsistant theres no universal file type. you have to have a ton of programs to read all the files out there for linux.
15.windows crashes GET OVER IT! they know its going to happen and they have done a good job dealing with it.

Okay i think thats enough of bashing all OS's i suppose i could bash Solaris but ive never used it OH theres something to bash.....no i will refrain from it.

Anyway people they all have their highs and lows deal with it macs making a good choice with the dual boot feature stop laughing at it.

The Solution ;)

Anyway, I don't see this as an issue anymore. If you're interested in PC gaming, then just go ahead and buy Windows, your Mac will run it, too.

Lol seeing noobies joining solely for the purpose of arguing for Apple.

This is becoming a bit like MacRumors...puahahah :)
