I would like to register a domain name, but there are so many registrars I dont know what to do. I will be doing all of the hosting myself, so I dont need or want a hosting service, I just need a domain name. That is it.

What do you guys think?

I have used Godaddy, DynDNS, Yahoo!, and Arbor Domains without problems. I usually wait for them to have a special and get it then.

godaddy's is currently number 1

network solutions is #2

i prefer network solutions for their system - how they have their control panel set up

i beleive go daddy has cheaper resgitration charges.

Network Solutions is kinda pricy compared to godaddy. But I like them anyway.

I like godaddy. No problems so far. Like someone earlier said, just wait around for the specials...so like every week. ;)

*EDIT* I note you said

Most hosting providers give you a free domain when you sign up for a hosting package with them. Not sure about the fees charged if you wanna switch hosting though, and move the domain to an "independent" registrar. Transfer fees I believe they are called.

Tried out GoDaddy for a recent one I did...they seem fine, useful control panel...I'll probably stick with them from now on. Haggling over a couple of bucks as to who is cheapest isn't worth the time...you'll find the cheap "fly by night" places are a nightmare to manage months or years down the road, if you need to change hands/contacts/settings, etc.

I used to use GoDaddy.com, my company rents some servers from theplanet.com, in the last 6-12 months they have become a DNS registrar, I've started using them mostly because it's simple since they were doing my DNS hosting prior anyway. Their prices are fairly competative as well.

Godaddy is good. All their ads are rather annoying but at least they're for in-house options, hosting and such and not, "Would you like a large pepperoni with that domain?"

I use GOdaddy and Dotster both have been realy good concerning service and options..

I have a whole bunch registered with godaddy right now. I had some with network solutions too, but i got them transfered. godaddy is super annoying, but, they have a good controll panel, good custromer support, and usually the best pricing. i also feel safe with them: they're not going anywhere anytime soon

I signed up for 1and1 internet hosting and got something like 3 free. It worked out great.

+1 for godaddy

netsol is fine, until you want to change domain name registrars or have account authority/ownership issues ... and then dealing with netsol is one big headache

why does network solutions suck?

Because their DNS service doesn't let you make TXT records, so no SPF information for your email domain if you use their free DNS service. You are limited to A, Host, and MX records only.

My favorite place used to be joker.com, but now that the Euro is strong against the dollar, they've lost their pricing edge (it was dirt cheap when the Euro first came out). TXT records aren't a problem with their free DNS service and their tech support staff is quite helpful and responsive, even via email.

Isn't godaddy famous for pulling websites and such off there network and people having to fight to get there shit backonline or get the domain back if they do? I'm talking about offensive sites. My boss uses them and there layout is not too bad but I just kinda remember something bad about them. I use directnic. Can't really say why just I've used them for a while. No issues yet.

Yahoo Small Business has a deal going. (Ripped from Dealnews)

Yahoo! Small Business: $2.99 domain names for new customers
For new customers, Yahoo! Small Business still charges $2.99 per year for .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, and .us domains. That's $7 off and among the lowest prices we've seen for a domain name. Limit one use per customer. The price rises after the first year. Deal ends June 30.
