Alright, well I got my E1705 loaded with the new 7900 GS from nVidia and the following is a really short bit about it.

First of all, I've had an E1705 before, I returned it when I found out the 7900 GS was released.

So far I noticed that my keyboard that I have now is nicer than the one before, the most noticable is the backspace key doesn't make as much noise and overall the keys just feel better.

I also noticed, still no dead pixles, so that's awesome, considering how many there are on this laptop.

I also noticed the heat is still pretty bad on the back portion of the laptop, I thought that would go down with the 7900 being 20W and my previous being 40W 7800... but it still is pretty bad, a bit better, but not to much. If anyone knows of a way to keep that part cool that would be great, maybe some kind of throttle software?

Anyways. One thing I did notice was that the new graphics card was AWESOME!

3DMark05 - 6200
Not bad, no overclocks, just stock on my 1.83GHz, 2GB RAM

Anyways, just thought I'd open up the floor for discussion, in case anyone was considering buying one and wanted to talk with someone who had one.

Is it easy to carry around?
Can you use it comfortably on your lap?
Can you see using it as a portable to take notes in class or something similiar?
What 3dmark score does your desktop get, how fast is it in games compared to the dell?
I currently have a Opteron 146/2gb ram/6800 setup with a 19"LCD, would u reccomend this as a good replacement for college in the fall?

Well. I carry it around all over my house no problem, I lay in my bed with it and have no issue watching movies for hours.
THOUGH: it does get quite hot, but nothing that a small sheet of cardboard won't fix, I just currently use the box it came with, the skinny one.
As far as using it for notes, hrm, before I would've said no, but I have a 9-cell now and I get 3 hours of life, so maybe, I might, but i don't really like to take notes on a computer, I'd rather type up my written notes.

My desktop, as you can see in sig gets... Oh dang it! What does it get! Crap I totaly forgot, I don't think it got 6200, like my laptop is getting now, I'm pretty sure it was lower.
I'm thinking 5200 right now, maybe 5100, I'll run it and double check.

Well if your looking for a laptop I'd definently consider this one, I love it, I have a 19'' LCD on my Desktop, but I prefer this screen. I also have a decent desktop, but I do prefer my laptop for pretty much everything, I still remote to my desktop to have it do stuff for me like decompress and other things.

OH and yes, comfortable in lap, it's on it now.

I just got my E1705 earlier this week. (a little less than $1400). While it's easy to carry around and use on your laptop, it's not the kind of laptop I would bring to class to take notes on. That's meant for 15' and below laptops.

I've VERy pleased with the laptop though. My main uses for it are video encoding and editing along with gaming. Compared to my old laptop which I sold (Intel P4 3.4ghz) this T2400 (1.83 duo) based laptop renders the same video twice as fast. Gaming is just amazing. I'm in the same situation now as I was when I bought my previous laptop 2 years ago.... It's faster than my desktop!.. I have a AMD64 4000+ with a 7800GTX and this E1705 with a 7900GS gets more FPS in the Quake4 timedemo in 1920x1080 than my desktop. For the price, it's a great deal. I hate spending over 2,000 for a machine that's going to outdate pretty fast, so I found this laptop a great deal.

Thanks for the reply, I'm probably gonna pick one up in a month or so to replace my desktop.
Also was wondering what RAM you got for it(through dell, or aftermarket from newegg ect) and if u got the upgraded screen.

Also, Im thinking of getting the 1.66 and saving $250 and OCing a bit. Have either of you tried this? What were the results?

I got 2GB of Mushkin paired from NewEgg... check'it out
EDIT: you don't save $250 for going down from 1.83

I customized a 1705 that starts at $1268 and they are charging $250 to goto a 1.8. The price changes with different deals.

Also, did you guys get the accident plan? Seems like a good idea, especially for me at college.

Not availible in FL, so no.
edit: Hrmm, anyways with a $750 off $2000, you'll probably have to upgrade to 1.83 to get up to $2000.

edit: roger, is that other monitor and keyboard hooked up to your lappy?

I didn't get the accidential plan. Remember only glance, don't stare.

har har...
My recommendation is, if you think your going to drop it, go ahead, if you don't... then just save the $ and get RAM with it.

I got a 9400 the day the 7900gs came out.
T2400
2gigs patriot
120gig 5400rpm
the video card is great I run it 500/1100 at stock volts
7500 3dmark 05 and 4300 06'
check this bootdisk out for Ocing video. instructions are in a stickied thread just read its well worth the trouble. I can play oblivion now @ 1900*1080 and with a little overvolting you can get up past 8k 3d 05

and drivers here

Wait, WTF, your running it at 500/1100! Stock s 375/507 according to my nVidia cpanel.

Anyways, at stock I got 6200... Going to try OCing, which tool are you using? Just coolbits?

EDIT: I tried using both nVidia and RivaTuner, but both of those reset the settings and won't ever hold them. I run 3DMark to make sure and it's true, they don't change the clock

the linkto notebook forum is to a boot disk that flashes the video card I think someone got it from dell or something. I flashed 500\1100...550 and then run the driver at stock speed option. The temps are exactly the same as they were before. and 3d mark/performace is through the roof. plus its easy to use so if I need to flash back to stock speeds for service its NP.just read the threads you will be glad you did

I LOLed at that. So true. I've seen it happen, too. Kid knocked a nice new 9300 off a 4 foot high table while a flock was walking through the engineering building. Broke the right hinge. Poor bastard :D

I've been trying to find an affordable gaming-friendly laptop lately and the best I've found so far is the Toshiba Satellite p105-s921. It also has the 7900GS, but it has a keyboard with a full numeric keypad, a fingerprint scanner, XP Pro is standard, a Core Duo 2400 is standard, and so is a 160GB HD. I tried configuring an e1705 the same way and ended up with a price of over $2400, whereas the Toshiba can be had from online stores for about $1870 shipped. Am I missing something or is the deal really that good? One drawback is that the HD RPM is slow.

Dell pretty much always has a -$750 off $2000 Inspiron, though. So price is about the same.

Cool--is this a coupon code that has to be tracked down, or just an instant-special kind of thing?

You have to look for a coupon code online. Just google $750 off $2000 dell inspiron and look through the links for a code. Usually they are pretty easy to find.

yea its a weekly coupon. I woulds get the Dell. When the 7900GTX comes to spare parts, you abilty to upgrade. People are getting over 10K with a T2600 and O/Ced 7900GTX Go.

People are getting 9800+ with a dual pipe 7900GS with a 130watt brick on notebook forums. But yah, a 7900GTX is a viable option as well.
