Do you hate widescreen? Are you male?

only used widescreen once. loved it. Male.

it was just because i didnt have to turn or w/e in hl2. thats a big + in cal matches....

16:10. have to get used to it first but then it's definately better.

oh yeah, male here.

Male

I have 2 20" monitors on my PC, one is wide screen and one is not.

Computer usage wise I like the non wide screen better - but if we're talking about watching videos I always prefer wide screen.

My feelings might be diferent if i had a 24/27/30" monitor though....

Male, widescreen when I have the choice. 1920x1200.

I think it has to do with multitasking. I like to have a browser window open along with a few source code documents (c, html, css, shell scripts ... whatever) in addition to the occasional aim conversation and ssh terminal(s). If I tried to do this on 4:3 I think I would find myself running out of screen real estate pretty fast. I also prefer using linux with 4 desktops when I dont need access to video games or photoshop.

I believe the exact opposite... It's been my experience that girls/women prefer 4:3 because it's what they're used to, or most comfortable with; or they don't prefer or understand that 16:9 offers almost 30% more visual viewing space. More often than not... I'd think that women want comfort and regularity beyond anything else.

I came to this conclusion working for blockbuster for 5 years - in multiple locations: parts of Florida, and southern nj. It was my understanding that people renting dvds were mainly males - maybe it's some of their interest in technology etc that seems to normally be allocated to the testoric type of activity... But it's the same reason that more men like a nice car, or a good overclock on a computer.

I definitely recognized that children always like 4:3 content more so, saying that the blackbars were annoying, and I came to understand that most women thought the same way or didn't care either way.

Unfortunately it has been my experience that you cannot get females to understand that when they go to a theater that the screen dimension there is not the same as their tv screen.

No matter how much I discuss 4:3, 16:9, 1.85:1, 2.35:1, etc etc, there were actually more than I care to admit that just did NOT understand the ratios were all different.

Then again, one of them was also quite upset when her mouse broke and I had to replace it, as it meant she had just lost all of the work she had done on her computer, as the mouse is where it is all stored (of course)...

Never ever underestimate the unfortunate fact that too many people just cannot grasp an understanding of the obvious...

For desktop, (I only just went to WS monitor FWIW), I think perhaps I still prefer 4:3 to 16:9. I like having a square area for working on Quicken, for instance. Or e-mail. Having W-E being that much bigger than N-S is taking some getting used to.

But for gaming, hands-down 16:9. It seems more natural.

Not sure why 4:3 ever came about anyway (easier which tech back then?)

16:9 is much more natural, and makes more sense for games.

Simply put: If you make a drawing of an oval that represents where your vision ends in every direction, it will be much closer to 16:9 being an accurate measurement of this than 4:3...

(actually, anyone know what the ratio of the above actually is?)

If I were to make a rough estimate...let’s see, on average you can see 180 degrees from left to right, and 90 up and down.

180 over 90, reduces to 18 over 9, reduces to 2 over 1.

So it’s roughly 2:1

Preferrence: Widescreen

Once you go widescreen you never go back.

ViewSonic VX205wm, 16:10.

Ever since getting a laptop with a widescreen monitor, I've loved it. Now that I've purchased this baby, I'm happy as can be. Getting a great game that supports widescreen going (such as CounterStrike: Source or Guild Wars) is both more enjoyable, and more functional. An example would be how I'm able to more effectively watch multiple entrances with widescreen, whereas a 4:3 person would have to constantly be looking around.

Widescreen user, and never going back.

I like widescreen for over 20", and 4:3 for under. I love my 30" widescreen Dell, but hate my laptops 15" widescreen.

Has it occured to anyone that this might be just a well crafted, somewhat humorous troll?

just asking...

Male, 4:3 --> I've seen widescreen, but I've been using 4:3 for the last 12 years, and it's hard to change both a preference and habit.

Edit: 1600x1200 ftw! :D

I like my computer with a 4:3/5:4 for webpages (porn and the forums). Movies I prefer widescreen. If I could afford or see a 24" or larger widescreen for a desktop I may change my mind, but as it stands I like what I have and what i've seen. My buddy has a 19" widescreen that looks nice, but the native resolution sucks and turned me off.

Full screen is for some women and most old people in the world. I work at Blockbuster as a full time manager and that's who gets the few full screen DVDs we have available - some women (soccer moms with 5+ kids) and 99% of old people. I'm happy to say that I've converted 10 or so people to going with widescreen DVDs basically because you get more of the movie.

Same thing with displays. You get more room with a widescreen display+resolution than you do with a 4:3 aspect. I'm really happy that widescreen is phasing out full screen as we speak and will become standard pretty soon.

I don't understand what people mean when they say that widescreen offers more space (compared to a 4:3). The area on a screen (or any rectangle for that matter) is a function of its length and width, not its aspect ratio.

I use a both a widescreen and a squarescreen. The main draw to widescreen in my mind is that they film movies and television in it (--the fact that my widescreen display is coincidently bigger is also a draw--). If they started filming movies in 4:3 I would gladly switch away from widescreen. I don't see any innate advantage in the widescreen format.

Does anyone know why movies are filmed this way? As far as I can tell, my vision is pretty circular. Maybe we should start using circular displays.

I think they meant the field of view is larger.

For content created in widescreen, you gain 45% more viewable area opposed to watching the same content in 1.33 (4:3) ratio. That's the area lost when converted to pan & scan.

The reason movies are primarily widescreen is fairly simple. A tv is a 2 dimensional plane, meaning it's more difficult to convey depth, distance, size, etc. Most movies are filmed in a process where the width of the screen is between 1.85 to 2.4 times greater than the height. This means that for every inch of screen height, the visual portion of the movie is between 1.85 to 2.4 times as wide. This results in a panoramic view that when used properly can add a greater perception of the environment and mood of a movie.

The same thing applies to photography as well; having to do with very similiar lense technology and what-not to create 2d images resulting in the best "feel" of space etc.

lenses are not flat, they are curved in such a way to show the most it can, in varying aspects of course. In order to correct the optical stretching associated with doing something like this (look at a pair of glasses, or a camera lense) A good example is take any quake engine game, that's defaulted to 90deg viewable space most likey and intended for a 4:3 display; now change the resolution to a 16:9 (or 16:10 more common for computer displays) you'll notice the images are all stretched, but if you change your field of view to something more appropriate, 105 or 115 or so the image will appear more "flat". The exact same effect works in film.
