I was mowing the back yard for the first time at my new place, and at the end of the yard i hit something, when I checked what it was I found a cable with a "CAT.5e INLINE COUPLER" on the end

It appears to be 2 feet of cat5e cable with electrical tape around the end and a RJ-45 jack going into this coupler thing. The cable just goes deep into my lawn. I have no idea why it would be there, I guess maybe the telco people left it there? You think I can hook up my laptop to it and get free GigE internet from Cox? :D

Id be packet sniffing/ping sweeping the shizzle on that thing to see whats up.

It could be that a couple of your neighbors were sharing internet and you just cut one of them off. I suggest a surcharge.

If all else fails...pull a langolier and dig that bad boy up.

It only goes two feet into the ground? Then I'd just pull it up and throw it away.

Nah, he said it went deep into his lawn. I guess what was above the ground was two feet of the cable.

bubbles, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to infiltrate this mystery network.

Yeah, but he said it was only two feet of cable. What is it that went deep into the lawn, if it wasn't cable?

o man sorry i left that there, i forgot to take that out before i moved, nah u should hook that bad boy out, would be nice to have some free internet

cut a jack onto it and see what happens.

Maybe it ties into that Apple II on "Lost" :D

Whelp I'm guessing if you "hit" it with your mower...whatever it "was"..is dead now. Somehow ethernet and spinning mower blades don't seem like they'd mix very well.

::CRIMP::

Yep and when you find out someone actrualy used it to run their sprinkler system off of it and it pushes 12 volts across your ethernet port you will wish you never found it.. :)

I believe he said there was two feet above ground, which went into the coupler, and then the rest of the cable went under his yard.

There's no dout about it; that's exactly what he said. What it means is up for debate, since he clearly says there's "two feet of cable" and that "the cable goes deep into his lawn", and those statements are apparently contradictory.

You silly n00b. They didn't have 100 mbit NICs hooked up to those mad 1337 Apple II's! :p

Tuning in here... funny thread.

It's probably a piece of cable the telco guys used to run the telephone or security system cables. They tend to use ethernet cabling for their runs.

I'm thinking it was a bunch of cable that was burried and was left there.

Apple ]['s also didn't have lowercase, but the show prominently features it.

That's what I'd guess too. No mystery mole-people network for you!

LOL nice! I was never a Apple II type of guy anyway. My 1st PC was a C64 and then a 8086 laptop for $2k! :p

Well I hooked up the laptop and tried 2 different NICs and it just said "network unplugged" so whatever is at the other end is turned off or isn't there any more so that's a bit of an anti-climax. I went ahead and snipped the cable. Strange none the less. The grass was way longer when I hit it BTW.

If it were me I would be out there with a kubota or a backhoe digging up my whole yard .

Is it me or does anyone find it hilarious that some CAT 5 is just sticking out of someone's lawn like that for no reason. :D

I mean seriously what are the damn odds.

I with the poster who said he should dig up his whole back yard. Go rent a bobcat with a back hoe attachment and go to town.

This mystery must be solved.

Can you atleast lie to us and tell us your browesing secrect$ hidden$ shares. And making copies of all the .garbage files pleeeeasseeee....
