Alright...so i finally succumbed and asked my mum to buy me oblivion...so she kindly goes out and buys it...

she comes back i put it in the dvd drive (without looking at the dvd) and it doesnt work...i take it out give it a nice clean and i see theres a HUGE scratch on it! :( ...i phone the store and they will not change it so im stuck...

so i phone one of my friends and he says dont worry...ill put my dvd drive in ur comp and try and load oblivion onto your harddrive...so i dropped it at his shop and i picked it up today in the morning, i follow his instructions to click on the launcher.exe and lo behold...it works!! i then muck about with the settings (graphics) press play and it says...PLZ INSERT DISK!!!

so what do i do now??? is there a file someone can give me to launch it? plz help me!!!

the store return policy is only 10 days and its been past that :(

what storei is it.

also i would contact bethesda see if they will let u replace it through them. Or atleast inform them of what storwe refuses to replace a faulty disk.

Well I guess you have no choice but to use a no-dvd crack.
If you don't know where to get one, I dont think [H] is the place to ask.

ive emailed them and ive had no reply yet :(

its a local store...newly set up and it was quite cheap there around £10 cheaper than everywhere else so i said just get it from there mum...i dont want to spend £40 to buy the game again from a reputable place...

I've contacted Bethesda a few times to report some bugs, and they take forever to get back to you. They are probably just swamped with emails.

from your telling of the incident, it doesn't seem like you waited 10 days to try the game. what store specifically did you get it from? can we have a tele number or e-mail? also, snap a pic of the scratch or scan the disc -- let's see what you're up against.

Get a cd buffer in case you get another bad cd or if you ruin an older one (good investment).

If the shiny side is where the scratch is then you can fix it. If it is the picture/title side then it is unable to be repaired.

In the meantime just use a no-cd fix.

hmm I would be weary of any mom and pop store that was brand new and could afford to sell a product at a 25% discount over the large retailers.. sounds fishy sounds like taiwanese pirate direct! :D I wouldnt buy from them again.

Either that or the kid is lying and just trying to get a crack for the game. I'm going with the lying theory.

then

If it was scratched and you noticed it not being playable 5 minutes after you open it, anybody with 10% of a brain would call the store right away -- not wait ten days. However, this kid says he notices the scratch right after his mom comes home with the game (not 10 days after). At which point he calls the store and they tell him they wont exchange it, but now he is saying that they have a 10 day policy. I'm calling bullshit.

A good legal way to fix it would be to just make a disk image of it with a higher-end DVD drive with ECC, as Oblivion has no crippling protection. Or just learn google instead of making up cheap-ass stories.

finsihed your rant? i havent gone to the store because ive got exams and £30 isnt much to me...i just asked for peoples help here...

anyways i spoke to the manager of the store and he gave me a new DVD...and he actually said an employee gave you the DVD from the returned section (where people buy/play/return) they only sold a couple of oblivions and they reckon (using logic) that mine was the missing one from returns...

thnx for everyones help here and the people who pm'ed me :)

it wasnt a cheap ass story and im not going to rip-off bethedsa...it took them ages to make the game and they deserve my money if im going to play it for more than 5 hours

if you read my first post then you wouldve realised that i phoned the store and was not allowed to change the DVD...

The data on a CD/DVD is actually written on the under side of the label, not on the plastic. You can get CD repair kits that will shave down the plastic underside of the disc to get rid of scratches. The reason scratches on the plastic interfere with the reading of the disc is because the laser gets refracted wrong where it hits the scratch so it doesn't read the right part of the disc, or at all.

yeah, because it was past the 10 day return policy... or did you forget that YOU wrote that? i see you're playing it, and that's fine, but i don't believe for one second that you bought the game legitimately. i also don't care, so there's that.

you have this ALL WRONG!

i phoned the store BEFORE the 10 days return policy but they said how do we know that you did not scratch it?

that is when i decided to put it onto my harddrive!

anyways think whatever you want, i have a clear conscience

Problem solved, no? Then why the hell is this thread still open? Oh...it's not. :)
