I've been looking at getting a new monitor for myself to replace my Samsung 712N, and would really like to make the jump up to widescreen. I was planning on getting a Dell 2005FPW, as I've heard (and seen) that they are excellent monitors. However, the 2007FPWs are out, and I would get one of those if it weren't for the banding issues I've read about.

Would it be worth it to get a refurbished 2005FPW from the Dell Outlet store, or are there any other monitors that I can look at? I'd prefer to not have to go to a TN screen again, as that is what I have now and it blows ass compared to damn near anything else.

Just two other options you may want to look at -
NEC's 20WMGX2... which has 1600:1, 470 Brightness, and 6ms. However it does come at a high premium mainly due to the NEC name, as well as the glossy coating...of about $700

LG also will be releasing a 20" Widescreen too... supposedly with 2ms response time and a 2000:1 contrast ratio(!!!!!). However I dont know when that's coming out.

Seconded.

Not thirded if you want to have at least the possibility to use 4:3 in some games without stretching. The Viewsonic can't do this and the picture will ALWAYS be strechted to widescreen, no matter what. For me that is a deal breaker. If you don't care about this, the model is probably very good (and if you can stand the aggressive anti-glare coating).

Scaling with nVidia's drivers works fine for my needs.

Doesn't work for their newest cards anymore, neither does it work for ATI cards as far as i know.

yeah, and you shouldn't have to buy a card based on how it scales on a widescreen monitor :p

That NEC looks quite nice, but quite pricey. Then again, that's NEC for you. That Viewsonic would be a steal at the price I see it being sold for, but that stretching problem kills it for me. Honestly, would it be worth spending ~380 or so for the 2005FPW, or are there any other suggestions that you guys have? FYI, I don't know jack or shit about monitors, so please enlighten me.

The 2005FPW has major issues with backlight bleeding and quality control, search the forums. You'll be doing the Exchange game with Dell I pretty much guarentee it.

There is no "PERFECT" monitor. And seriously, the people bitching about the stretching are the overly picky people.

NEC and samsung is out of price range.

I think your same page as i am.
Right now im looking at the
Viewsonic vx2025wm
LG L203WT
Dell 2007fwp

Now scaling is no biggy becuase should play anything out its native res anyway and never did on my 20.1 4:3 viewsonic monitor which i returned to pick up one of these 3 on list.
To me with all the bad talk i think the dell has the worst problem yet it has the best features for longevity. LG is close to the Dell in problems and it doesnt have the features that the dell threw in theres. I guess thats where you save the 40 dollers.
The logitech being the cheapest at 100 dollers less then the most expensive is the one that shines but the thing that bothers me is its looks and how im paying for speakers when clearly i would have like HDCP support instead. Its really hard to pick and wish the dell didnt have those problems that it does. And pissed that viewsonic spent money on speakers for its monitor. Even lower MS which is my attraction would have been nice.

Anyone know the list of upcoming 20inch widescreen monitors? I really want a true 8ms or lower. Also not willing to pay over 550 CDN

Well i hooked up my viewsonic vx2025wm And well picture quality is pretty darn good but after playing some counter strike source i can really say that the ghosting is pretty bad. Coming from a 20.1 viewsonic lcd 4:3 (really wanted to upgrade to widescreen)

Also the corner lighting was so obvious! noticed it on the first black screen. Thought i was getting an x-men preview : )

For the price i think its great but i would rather have had them spend the money on the monitor then spending on speakers (WORST idea ever on a media monitor)

Really picky on the respnse time.

When the monitor is cold, games like CS:S will ghost bad in dark areas. Let it warm up, it will get better.

Thanks for the help, it looks like I'll shell out the money for the ViewSonic monitor instead of trying to play the Exchange game with Dell because of backlighting issues. I had read about those, but I was kinda hoping Dell had ironed out the problems. Guess not.

It would be nice to have the monitor able to scale the picture if need be, but I doubt I'll be running it in anything that isn't Native, or at least the proper 16:10 ratio. Almost every game has hacks out to where you can fix it into widescreen if those modes aren't supported natively, and hell, if need be I'll throw the game into windowed mode.

OMG its not higher then 60mhz?
WOW my olderone at least went to 70.
I guess thats the difference im noticing in playing games. Poor mhz and 16 ms NOT SOMETHING you want for gaming. Sorry this monitor is going bye bye

This is so not a media monitor. Its some business monitor which wants a widescreen for some reason. : /

If you aren't looking at tons of pictures all the time then the 2007FPW is fine. I never would have noticed the banding if I hadn't read about it. I've only seen it on certain types of pictures anyway. The majority of my wallpapers, digital photos, and even games do not show it. You have to look for it. When it is there it isnt that bad. My LCD was made in Mexico and it seems that the worst ones come from China. I use my PC for only 2 main things now...the internet and gaming. People doing the same should have no problems. I have no dead or stuck pixels and only a tiny bit of backlight bleeding in the lower right corner caused by the power and imput LED's. The advantages over the 2005FPW and other monitors far outweigh the tiny banding problem. I think people who don't even own the 2007FPW seem to be hyping up this problem more than it is. I got a fucking awesome LCD at a great price and am willing to accept a tiny imperfection I never really notice.

A lot of the people complaining about banding are ones who look at a lot of pictures so I can understand their frustration. Average joe will be happy with it.

There is no perfect LCD as Coldtronius said.

BTW, the 2007FPW can scale to 4:3 for non-widescreen games if you can't tweak them.

Well im using the viewsonic vx2025wm right now and ghosting is the worst problem for me. Each corner does have the leaking but that doesnt bother me. Picture is great but with the 16ms and the 60hz the ghosting is AWFUL!
So not a gaming monitor... ill be returning it. If the dell doesnt do better then this monitor in ghosting then ill be waiting for new monitors to come out becuase this is just insaine.
