I am waiting on picking up the next gen systems... and both of these older consoles have alot going for them but I for the life of me can not pick one (and dont want to spend the extra on buying both).

I like games from each of them

Xbox:
DOA series
GRAW
etc...

PS2
Soul Calibur 3
God of War
etc...

I generally find the controls of an xbox more used to my old Dreamcast and N64, so that is helping a bit.

My main problem though is having a 53in HD. I know the PS2 has some games in 480p and 16x9 but nearly every xbox game brings this to the table if not 720p.

I am worried that the PS2 doesn't look good when stretched that large, and I am a big baby who is used to running PC games near max.

Any input on which system and why, graphics on a 16x9 big screen, surround capability etc is greatly appreciated.

I know I am years behind but the Fiance' and I want some upgraded fighting games like Soul Calibur 3 and MK:D, while I want online for things like GRAW or Socom.

Thanks a million!

...isn't GRAW only for the 360 or is that what you mean?

If you're looking at an Xbox1 vs. the PS2, I'd go with the PS2. It's still getting new games, has a larger library, and is cheaper. If you mean the 360...go with that. It's a new and growing system, while the PS2's lifespan is pretty much limited to another 12 months.

Yeah, I concur. If you can't/don't want a 360, go with a PS2. The Xbox is ungloriously being rush EOL'd and still costs alot relative to the PS2's new $99 price. Sony's still developing some big name stuff for the PS2 (GoW 2, SOCOM4, etc).

Being the partisan I am tho, I'd go 360 if you can afford it/want it. ;)

I would ignore what will "look better" and just worry about the games. If you're that concerned about the image quality, I suggest a trip to an art museum. The difference between the PS2 and Xbox is not large enough to warrant purchasing the Xbox over the PS2.

Here's what I would do, if I were you. Make a list of games for each system that you would like to play. Remove any games that are available on both systems. Then, see which system has the most exclusive games you want to play. The one with the most is the one I would buy. Personally, I chose the PS2.

GRAW is on the xbox too... not just the 360, but after reading what they trimmed off of it for the regular xbox that is now off of my list if I pick up an xbox.

I guess most of my concern comes down to playing a PS2 on a big screen, from what I have seen the quality of the graphics really goes down hill as most every xbox game is atleast 480p if not higher... plus alot of them support 16x9, ontop of the xbox generally just having better graphics to start.

I also hate... and I do mean hate the PS2 controller... with a passion... die.

On the other hand there is the issues you all raised... so I still don't know what I am going to do :/

You might be able to find a controller for the PS2 that is like the Xbox controller. If I remember correctly, I think I saw something like that for sale before (for some reason I think on ebay, but I don't really remember).

The pick it based on the games really isn't working well for me as they both are about even. However comming out games does lean twards the Ps2, something I didn't consider before your posts.

Based on this we may just wait until both next gen systems are out as I really will not enjoy spending money on something that looks worse than my million year old Dreamcast.

I know it's shallow... but I have an HD for a reason :/

If you have HD, I'd highly recommend going 360. GRAW and Oblivion (even if you aren't an RPG guy) would be the two titles to pick up. Waiting for the PS3 to compare has merits (especially since E3 may shed some more light), but on the other hand the 360 is here and now and delivering at a high level IMO.

I vote for PS2, because of FFX and the Ratchet and Clank games...

$99 for a ps2? i thought it was 129? Did it drop again?

Anyways i say go with the ps2.

I already have Oblivion for PC and we both generally love fighting games, which 360 has just DOA out for.

With HD being one of my major factors the 360 would be the best of the 3 decisions, but based on how much time we will be able to put twards this over the next 8+ months... I am not sure we wouldn't get just as much entertainment out of a setup 4 times cheaper over that time, allowing me to choose which top end console meets our tastes at that time.

I would certainly pick up a PS2 if I was sure about the quality on my big screen. I know I have seen titles like Guitar Hero on a friends 60" and was not pleased. However in my research I have found that it is a per title issue for big-screen capability so on some they look very nice indeed.

I know it doesn't seem that I am making any progress... infact that may be the case as comming home tonight I told my Fiance' that we were getting an xbox, only to open this thread I made from work. I appreciate the honest answers even if they are causing me torment ;)

I've bought both this year, and play them about evenly. I think what you should do is make a list of what your must-have games are for each system and go from there - that's what I did. I got the PS2 first because there were more exclusives that I wanted, but if you want a lot of cross-platform games the xbox is definitely better because of the graphics and controller.

As far as pricing, the PS2's lower price is deceptive. Sure it's $50 cheaper, but you need a $25 memory card, and the xbox does come with Forza. If you like racing that's cool but if not it's kind of a rip off - eb only gives you $1 for it :D Additionally, if you like party games, you need to spend another $20-25 on a four-player adapter for the PS2, while the xbox supports 4 out of the box. So I think that when you factor in the accessories, they're about even.

In terms of fighting games, the xbox is definitely inferior in the 3D realm, but in terms of 2D they're about even - both have Guilty Gear X2 (xbox version is better), the Street Fighter Anniversary collection (third strike rules) and CvS2 (don't have this one yet), as well as recent crappy capcom games like Evolution and Fighting Jam. You can also get MvC2 on the PS2, but why would you when that costs more than a dreamcast + the dreamcast version, esp. when the dreamcast version is much better.

Alternatively, E3 is next week, so if you wait a few days, you'll be able to make a more informed decision based on what's comming out.

A lot of the newest PS2 games have native 16X9 in games, so at least it won't be stretched out.
In all honesty, if visual splendor is that big of a deal to you, you shouldn't be looking at either.
Even Xbox 480p can't touch the 360 and what the PS3 and Wii will be doing.
If you're a really visual person, you don't need either of those systems.

damn i expected way less ps2 reccomenddations after reading the OP's first post :p

I own both and I'd have to reccomend Xbox. I have an HD tv and the ps2's games do look kind of crappy on it. I only have one game that supports progressive scan (480p) and that's Primal. havn't tried it yet though.

I will say that XBox games still look great to me for such an old hardware. I'm currently enjoying midnight club 3 (it's on ps2 also but looks like ass and runs less smoothly). There are good fighting games on the box too, mortal kombat you mentioned, soul calibur 2, lots of capcom games, doa3, doa ultimate (my fave), guilty gear etc. If you'll be playign online the xbox is definatlely a better choice too.

Honestly you can't go wrong with either system at this point, but IMO based on your need for better graphics and the types of games, xbox is the better choice. Don't get one if you want RPG's though, ps2 stomps the shit out of it in that category.

Why don't you see if a store near you rents systems out (video rental stores used to rent systems out dunno if they still do) and try them both out.

GT4, Burnout Revenge all look amazing on my room-mates 55" HD Mitubishi. though another newish game, Resident Evil 4 looks rather old skool, but it has that eerie look to it, so it's hard to stick a poor graphics rating to it. It still does look like a first gen PS2 game, like MIdnight Club for instance. NFSU NFSU2 looks & plays better on the Xbox IMO. So it's a hard call, but like you said more Xbox titles support 480p 720p. And GT4 in 1080i does not look spectacular by any means. BTW the wireless logitech PS2 controller is very comfortable. Buy it, it's a must, if you onw a PS2

I play my Xbox more than my PS2 because it is hacked and looks better on my plasma but I do think the PS2 has better games out and still coming out. If you want to play multiplayer then xbox live is nice or if you plan to play cross platform games then the xbox will run them better. I would suggest getting a 360 though because it looks way better than the old xbox and since PS3 is not coming out until the end of the year you could be enjoying 360 goodness for at least a year before some big games really come out for the Playstation.
