I have an IDE ata100 HDD and I am going to buy a SATA 150 seagate drive for my new computer tommorow. I was wondering if I will be able to set the ata100 drive as a slave to the SATA 150? As far as I can tell, SATA HDDs need their own type of cable. If it is possible to set these two drives as master/slave, will I need a special type of cable? Thanks for info!

there are no master slave type relationships with sata. the ide will be on another controler, set it as master.

I am getting this ASUS mobo:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131569

Under the stats, it says:

Storage Devices
PATA 2 x ATA100 up to 4 Devices
PATA RAID NV RAID 0/1/0+1 JBOD
SATA 1.5 Gb/s 4
SATA RAID NV RAID 0/1/0+1 JBOD

Does this mean that I can plug both my IDE HDD and SATA drive into the mobo?... or will I need to buy a seperate controller to do this?

Also, will I need a different Power Supply to handle a SATA drive or will the one that I am using now work just fine? The one is a regular molex type that I use for my Socket A CPU and IDE drives, etc.

You should be able to plug them both in unless you have a lot of drives already installed. Most sata drives come with a regular molex plug for power as well as a sata power. Use one or the other. DO NOT USE BOTH POWER INPUTS AT THE SAME TIME.

otherwise you should be fine. make sure your ata is set as the first boot device in bios if that's where you have windows installed.

So basically the SATA and IDE drives will be in a Raid array? How can I copy the files from my existing IDE drive to the SATA drive if this is the case? Will I be able to access the IDE drive while im using the SATA drive?

Also, the it sounds like the IDE drive *must* be set as master and must be booted to first when starting up? Why is this

Sorry for the newbish questions, this will only be my second build.

Thanks again for answers or references to tutorials

They will not be in any type of raid array unless you set it up like that.
And you don't want to.

SATA is just a newish interface between the drive and the mobo.
You can only have one drive on each cable so you don't have to worry about setting a master/slave jumper.

You can set your IDE drive to either Master or Slave and it wont make any difference to the SATA drive.

As to which one you boot off.
That is set in the bios.

Your best bet is when you first set your new computer up, only attach the drive you want Windoze on.
Go into the bios and record to boot settings.
Install Windoze and only then attach the other drives.
If Windoze wont load then go back into the bios and check that the correct drive is the first boot one.
Doing that makes sure the boot.ini files go onto the correct drive.
And that how I set my computer up which has 4 SATA drives & 4 IDE ones.

Luck.............. :D

Sometimes though with older motherboards that had SATA when it first came out, I have seen some conflicts where the motherboard really thinks that the SATA is a IDE master and I have gotten device conflicts.

No, but the controller you will be hooking the SATA drive up to supports raid.

First determine which drive you want to boot from. I would suggest the SATA just because it will be a newer disk. When you build the new machine, set the boot order to the SATA controller in the bios. Do not even plug in your old drive until windows is installed and you are up and running. After you are good to go on the new install, shut down and plug in the old drive and power back up. It should then be visible/accessable in my computer.
