Seems Dell gaming got finally got some brains

That should be an option on all their systems. "Barebones - OS + Drivers only".

ja, but they make alot of thier cash having that junk pre installed, so probably won't happen on any normal systems.

IIRC most of their workstations (Optiplex) have the "no extra shit" option.

Yeah the commercial units are pretty lean.

Yeah business comps should be that way(don't they even offer linux on those?), cause when the computer's add on software starts interfering with money then people really get pissed. Gaming should be that way too, but seemed to take them awhile to get that down.

I wish I still had the link but Dell does offer Linux on there systems...it's just damn near impossible to find the right person that knows about it to order it..I work for dell that's how i know.

and all Optiplexs come basically barebones OS's because a "normal" consumer can't purchase one only businesses..

I think the non-intel option would be the best one. :) *busts out the firehose*

I can't get my contact to comment on that. PR guys are so hard to get to say "Yes", but I'd have to agree with you on that.

After acquiring Alienware, they'd have to try really really hard not to go that direction, and honestly I don't think Intel is paying them enough to keep being the laughing stock of the PC world. After the losses they've had in sales, and general numbers, and Intel's financial results, it's only a matter of time.

... then again, it's been a matter of time since K8, and how long has that been? :)

I mean, really, how can they market Alienware vs XPS when Alienware pwns XPS in its face? :)

We had a four hour meeting at Dell on Thursday, and spent an hour with Michael Dell himself - Dell is deadly serious about gaming, and we're going to write an article about it shortly...

That's awesome, I look forward to seeing it. I was in the process of writing one myself, but unfortunately haven't had the time to finish it up.

Not to mention I don't have a whole lot of information that isn't widely known or available.

Actually just by means of acquiring AW alone they already by default sell AMD systems (in a way) but it remains to be seen of they will still offer AMD by extension AW systems or actually sell AMD with real Dell systems. Also Conroe is right around the corner and i don't think AMD will have an answer for a time. It will be interesting to see what direction Dell goes for sure. It couldn't have been nice for Michael Dell to see eMachines sell units for $600.00 that will game better than most any $1800.00 XPS (with same vidoe cards added to both respectively).

Wow, you're right. I haven't looked too much at Conroe, but a quick browse around the internet shows some interesting results. It looks like Intel is picking up lost ground really fast in that case.

I guess the coming months will show a lot, yes?

delll coming around? great news. always felt their XPS line has potential

We can only hope. I'm really looking forward to upgrading to an amd-based laptop. Although my Inspiron 9300 is actually pretty impressive. Kinda funny too, I always said I'd never own an Intel, or an nVidia... or a Dell. And I'll be damned if I didn't buy all three in one.

why the hell does a base XPS400 come with an ATI X300SE standard?? oh well at least the 7300LE is an option. lol.

shit, thats bad lol

but seriously, dell needs to offer computers w/o installed software, plsu dont froget, normal people would rpobobly complain becuase they use the cheap crippled software in thare

No doubt Dell is a serious dude. And I'm sure after last quarter's numbers were announced he's even more serious than ever about gaming - it's one of the last growth opportunities for Dell. But I have to wonder if that ship has already sailed. I'm sure their strategy involves introducing the gaming PC to the mainstream market, but I think years of underground buzz and exposure have already taken care of that. Where will the gaming PC go from here?

Looking forward to reading that article - when should we expect to see it?

Really if Dell started to list the parts the use (brand, type, etc.) and give you options to change in and out parts and offered AMD, along with keeping cheap prices i'd buy a gaming unit from them. I mean when you can get all the stuff for less then the cost to buy it off newegg it defiantly be worth it to just reformat and update everything yourself (plus switch cases lol).

Maybe - but check out the new review on cyberpower. If Dell adapted their model more to the one reviewed, I'm not sure the experience would be worth it.

"Seems Dell gaming got finally got some brains"

Seems as though this doesnt apply to the Op though. Sorry, cheap shot.

Its good that Dell is getting involved more with PC gaming...that means better for PC gamers as we won't have to worry as much about PC games dying off because of consoles...

I don't think that's a serious concern. for most people it isn't either/ or - it's an overlap of the two.

Dell is serious about everything they do, in contrast to many other OEM companies, and that's why they're huge ;)

I knew this would make you happy.

Dell admitted to us that they made mistakes, and that tells me they're serious about getting this right.

any chance of a bloatware-free dell review then?

Yowzas - was this a general confession or did he get into specifics? Any chance these admissions of "mistakes" will make it into your article?

They took our article seriously instead of burying their heads in the sand or dismissing it as certain people have done. I'm excited by the changes they have made and what they have shown us specifically addresses issues we had with the XP 400. The bottom line is that it will translate into better systems that require less support, run faster, and will increase the number of systems sold.

Well, I just received my new XPS m1710 with the limited crapware. Let me tell you, it is still there. I am preparing as I type this, to wipe the drive.

Upon my first boot, everything seemed fine. I had the standard startup, along with the dell quickset (for the hotkeys), dell support, NetWaiting whatever the hell that is, Modem helper, and a crapload of roxio burning tools that dont work for nothing.

I play one game right now, Lineage 2. Before I could even get it loaded, my XPS blue screened on me. I reboot, to VGA mode just fine, and set my rez back to 1920x1200. Keep in mind, this is before I loaded ANYTHING.

Now, I just went into MSCONFIG, and disabled everything. Now the PC boots up fine. Not the best first impression.

I just got done loading Lineage 2, and it runs smooth as silk with everything disabled. Good to go for now.

Did you specifically choose "no preinstalled software"? I'm curious because I have not yet seen an implementation of this. Dell has said that they are going to continue to tweak this program, so I'm convinced they are going to do what's necessary here...

GAH! Just realized I mistyped the title, yeah I feel like an idiot lol.

Missed those?

Well without all that stuff dell gamign laptops are looking alot better, now if you could just have an option to take off the HUGE dell logo on the back.

Those were removed in my order. Thats the funny thing. When they offered the free upgrade to the DVD burner on the m1710, there was no option to remove that specific one. As was stated before, they are updating I guess. Either way, with or without, BSOD on the original OOBE is bad.

And to be honest, the dell logo isnt that big. Just over the size of a 50c piece. 2" maybe.

Yeah, it’s not that big, and the silver logo on the new XPS laptop looks pretty good. Through I suppose it’s more of the LAN experience is why I don't like DELL stamped on the back of my comp. It would be nice if they allow the plain back or just a stylized back rather then the focus on the logo. I don’t want my hardcore gaming laptop viewed as “damn he got suckered into buying one of those bloatware filled, cheap parted, hunks of plastic”. Though I suppose with this new turn DELL is taking towards the gaming crowd, people might want others to know they have a DELL.

With taking off the bloatware, keeping low prices, and listing exactly what they put in your comp(and changing the cheap case and wiring job they do on desktops), DELL might just start taking a large chunk of the PC gaming market.
