This rig will be for gaming only (mild gaming at that). NO overclocking, no multi-tasking. Will be used for 2 1/2 years at most.

^ Which would you chose based on this?

I would go with the 3800+ or 4000+ for several reasons over the 4200+ if you dont want to overclock it or do heavy multi tasking....

Reason 1 its faster single core will be better for games.
Reason 2 some games have problems with dual core still and requir messing with.
Reason 3 if your not going to overclock the 4200+ which is uber fun ;p I have several at 2.6ghz single core 2.4ghz will provide a better experiance imo depending on your graphics and ram situations so that its not the gpu being bottlenecked.

Although I would prob buy a 3800+ if I went with a single over a 4000+ for the price the cache is going to provide maybe a 2-3% difference and for gaming its somthing imo you will not notice.

I own both a 3800+ newcastle and 2 4000+ San Diego and id be hard pressed to tell while the 3800+ is about 40-50$ cheaper more money for teh uber ram/graphics/hdd's

If you can confidently say you're doing no overclocking and no multitasking, go for the fastest single core you can afford. But you already knew this...
