So i just got my new Dell 3007FPW. It's pretty awesome especially in a triple display setup with 2 2007FPs.

I have all these sparklies on the screen though that sort of ripple through the screen.. i assume that they are all from a bad dual-DVI cable although i have tried and tried reconnecting it with no improvement. Did Dell just send me a bad cable, or could there be something wrong with the monitor itself? Where should i get a quality cable then?

Maybe i should tell Dell to send me a new dual-dvi cable. They didn't even include a power cable in my package! i had to scrounge around for an old one in my apt.

I don't know if its the same thing, but I had a similar issue with my 2001fp and it turned out to be a checkbox in my ati drivers. Like reduce frequency in high resolution dvi displays or something

Hmm.. Thanks for the tip. There ARE 2 DVI settings in the Catalyst Control Panel that i didn't know about and that are supposed to address display correction. One is Reduce DVI frequency and the other is Alternate DVI operational mode. I tried playing around with them and all they do is change the nature ofthe sparklies. One of them makes them more sporadic or more clumped together. Weird.

It MUST be the display cable i guess.

on your triple set up, on the smaller monitors did you have them in portrait mode?

Yes smaller flanking monitors are in portrait mode. I have a pic here but how do I post it?

ANyone with further advice about the sparklies?

Ok here it is. the monitors actually look small cuz i had to be far back to actually include the whole thiing in the picture. I am using an Ergotron DS100 triple mount and the left monitors is a little crooked because of that (non-adjustable).

In case you guys are wondering, I am using the ATI Surroundview to drive these. 1 monitor is driven by motherboard graphics, and other 2 driven by video card (x1300 for now)

I upgraded from a Dell 2405, Dell 1704fpt x 2 triple setup and this setup is of course substantially more real estate. Awesome.

These sparklies are driving me crazy!!!

OK

I had this problem on my dell laptop screen and its well documented. Its "due to the high resolution" on the screen and something about not lining up correctly so there appears to be a sparkle or sheet over it (hard to explain). Just RMA it. Thats the only way. I went through about 3 before I got a good one.

spacecadet - that is the most insane monitor setup I've ever seen! I shudder to think what that all cost you.

Sparkles means there's a signal problem. Either the video card is not handling the high resolution properly, or the monitor is defective. I doubt it's the cable, but I suppose it's possible.

Oh no do i really need to RMA the thing? Seems like such a hassle. It may be a good idea though i suppose. Does anyone know what the process is? Can i just email the Wipro guy i bought it from?

Total cost (including tax) = $1693 + $340 x 2 = ~2373.

Sold old triple display set up on ebay for ~1000

total upgrade cost was ~1373. still a lot of money but not nearly as bad as you might think for what i think is the best most productive set up you can buy right now

OK, you absolute bastard. 1x 3007 and 2x 2007 has to be THE display setup right now. I have my 3007, but there's no way I'll be able to got the 2007s any tikme soon. Can we have some more high res pics of the set so we can drool a little more, pretty please!

Ok an update. I called Dell tech support and set up a replacement that will be here on Tuesday.

Interestingly, on further google research, i came across a huge Apple 30" LCD discussion about the exact same problem i am having (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1104348&#1104348). Don't the Apple and the Dell use the same panel? I wonder if there is a manufacturing defect. There is a theory that the LCd itself is overheating. I am going to try and decrease the brightness settings as some of them suggested.

2007fp for $340 is a total hassle to do.

Wait for some Dell LCD/computer deal combo (I did E510 + 2007fp for $730)

Sell computer on ebay.
LCd price = combo price - sold computer ebay price (and also accounting for paypal/ebay shipping fees etc)

It's a crapshoot in terms of how much you can sell the computer for on ebay but it'sdoable.

I had this a couple of times on one of my original 3007's, in addition to the random backlight switching off, and I had to RMA it.

Thanks god someone has had my problem then. I couldn't understand how all you 3007wfp owners hadn't been complaining about it. Hopefully my next one will be perfect.

If you can, try demanding a brand new replacement, espically if you're within the first 30 days of purchase. My first replacement was a refurb. It looked like somebody had spilled some shit on the screen, this tried cleaning it up with something that ate the plastic. My second replacement was a brand new one.

Yep the rep said she would send me a brand new one not refurbished.

crossing my fingers.

Ok update. Received my brand new 3007wfp today to replace the one i was having all the sparklies (dancing green pixels). Hooked it up ... and..

It's exactly the same!! Hmm.. what do i do now? Maybe it isn't the monitor that is defective after all, unless i received 2 defective ones.. what are the chances of that?

I receive another video card tomorrow so i can test that out. This is such a pain.

Make sure you use the cable that came with the 3007 with the 3007, the ones that came with the 2007s with the 2007s. I remember reading a similar problem to yours where someone had a 2405 and 2005 hooked up but switched the cables. It seems dells saves money by sending you a cable with will handle the bandwidth of the monitor at came with max.

Yea, check to make sure you're using the new cable that came with the new 3007. Is there any way you can post pictures of the monitor? Have you upgraded to the newest video card drivers, and what video card are you using and what did you order?

Wow so i now tried the new dual-link DVI cable from the new moinitor.. still exactly the same!!!

And then, i thought what the hell i'll play around with the ATI Catalyst settings. I checked the settings for Reduce DVI frequency on high-res displays AND Alternate DVI operational mode (which i also tried on the old monitor with no luck)..

it fixed the problem!! i don't know what the heck happened.. the cable (they SHOULD be the same), or the monitor (maybe).. who knows i'm just glad the damn sparklies are gone.

I'll keep testing it tonight.. hopefully they will stay gone.

For the recent poster YoureDoingMeDamage, .. never mind.

What I found astonishing in that picture is the 2007 still gets short changed even in portrait mode. It really shows just how much of a behemoth the 3007 really is.

Well the 3007 and 2007 in portrait acutally match up exactly in pixels and physical dimension. I am unable to adjust the 2007fp too well because they are all on one mount. If there were all on separate stands, they would perfectly line up. I;m willing to give that up for the extra desk space under the 2007s

Yeah i'll get around to posting more pics. BTW sparklies gone for good. No dead pixels on either of the 2 3007s i got. I am completely happy with the 3007wfp. Now i got to send the old back.

Wow what the hell is wrong with you? That is just stupid and useless. The 2007's look pretty gay next to the 3007.

Dude, you don't even understand do you!? You didn't even have to post that useless crap here.

Well the dancing green pixels are back. WOrked fine yesterday but i got my new video card today and installed it. And now they are back.

I really suspect that the monitor is not at fault. I suspect that there is a shielding/interference issue with the DVI cable. I may at some point buy a better shielded cable, but for now i will live with the sparklies.

For some reason, i only see them now when i have an AVI file running full screen or when a picture is displayed. I don't see them on mu desktop or any of the windows.

I bought an ATI x1600 for temporary use (gonna return it) until my x1300 arrived today. I know, not exactly upgrade but my PC is silent and wanted the fanless x1300. Plus i am not a gamer and it was only $75 AR.

Here's a pic of the sparkly pixels (it's a close up of my previously posted pic). It's weird, it's much better than it was originally. They always show up when i display pictures. Otherwise not usually there (Originally they were flickering constantly). Althoughrandom things seem to set them off ( moving a separate window really quickly around and around, a little bit of the sparklies will appear on the desktop on the opposite side) The pixels tend to flicker at random intervals.. now they seem to be linear bands that repeat in the same spots only when pictures are displayed. (If i display the picture and see the sparklies, and then move any window or even my TV display over the same area, they disappear) THey are NOT present at lower resolutions.

It's a defective panel. I've seen similar experiences on other panels manufactured by Samsung. Send it back and demand a new one, again.

Yea, it looks like a bad panel again. Odd, but hey, it could happen.

Now, run out and buy a lottery ticket as well.

Unfreaking believable. dancing pixels are now back with a vengeance. i don't understand how it was perfectly fine last night.

i guess i'll go for my 3rd panel. will call tomorrow. The CSR person is usually a pain to deal with.. i usually have to go though some inane steps on my computer with them over the phone to show i am not a complete idiot.

Is there a specific phone number or efficient way to deal with the CSR for the RMA?

Hmm.. i'm debating whether to just return the 3007 for good and get a refund. I can't believe i'm the only one having these issues. If i did RMA again i'm sure i'll have a bunch of dead pixels too knowing my luck. i figure i could maybe get a better deal on the 3007 sometime down the line. or at least the same deal.

If i had someone home to deal with UPS pickups then it wouldn't be such an issue. But as it is, i need the lug the huge boxes to a UPS site.
