Viewsonic VX2025wm arrived! First impressions and pics

ready to pull the trigger on one.....I have to ask....how is this monitor for FPS games?? as that is what it will be doing 60% of the time....I'm a CS:Source fan, also Quake4....last year I bought the 2005fpw and the ghosting was so horrible that I had to return it so I went with what I have now...930B.........any input would be greatly appreciated:)

I actually started playing CS: Source last night cause I was bored outa my freaking mind. It ran flawlessly and I play HL2 Deathmatch, BF1942, BF1942 and some UT2k4 since I bought the thing and i've seen so little ghosting I can't even notice it without really looking. Much better then the Dell 2405 and 2005 I had fora while.

how is the text clearity on this monitor?

like in word etc.. or does it look funny cause it's so stretched out?

Just to let everyone know, according to flatpanels.dk, the VX2025wm has a S-IPS display.

ViewSonic VX2025wm (widescreen) har et 20 tommer 8 ms (g2g) S-IPS (LG.Philips LM201W01) panel.

NEC LCD20WGX2 (widescreen) har et 20 tommer 6 ms (g2g) S-IPS (LG.Philips LM201W01) panel.

This is the same LG S-IPC panel that is in the new NEC LCD20WGX2. In the US it is known as the 20WMGX2. To me, this makes this Viewsonic to be a very desirable panel. For one, behardware.com reviewed the NEC LCD20WGX2, and found it to be very good for gaming (http://www.behardware.com/articles/610-1/nec-20wgx-an-ips-equivalent-to-a-2-ms-tn.html), as fast as a TN panel. Also, since it is an IPS panel, you know it will have great color reproduction, so this would be an ideal choice for photoediting and other graphic work (unlike a TN panel). Only problem I see with the Viewsonic is that it does not seem to have HDCP support, unlike the US NEX 20WMGX2 (see http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/windows_vista-ready_hdcp_lcd_roundup/). On the other hands, the NEX retails for like $800, so the viewsonic is nearly 1/2 the price for the same panel.

Differences between the NEC 20WMGX2 and Viewsonic:
- NEC has a feature called Advanced DV which supposedly boosts the contrast ration from 700:1 to 1600:1 by altering brightness based on what is being displayed on the screen
-NEC has s-video, component, and rca inputs
-NEC has a glossy type screen (do not know if this is an advantage or disadvantage, depends on your preference I guess)
-NEC has HDCP

Here is another link to a good NEC review: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/nec_20wgx2.htm

Overall, sounds to me like the XV2025wm could turn out to be a fantastic monitor. I wish it had HDCP.

has viewsonic changed the type of panel used in vx2025wm?
according to two websites, its now a P-MVA panel...
http://www.prad.de/en/guide/screen2648.html
http://flatpanels.dk/panels.php <- search vx2025wm

i personally prefer p-mva for the good viewing angles but others might be interested in s-ips...

If I'm not wrong, the 2025 has always been a P-MVA, with panels by AUO..

I think the S-IPS panel should be incorrect (at least, that's what the Dell's using..)

I picked this up last Saturday and I've been pleased with it, but I don't think enough to keep it. I have definitely caught the widescreen bug and will never go back. I'm open the hunt for a LCD that I can do my design and web work on(photoshop, flash etc) and play FPS games. I also need something without glass because my office is 50% windows and I can barely see my screen on sunny days.

So the things I like:

- No motion blur in games that I can see. I play a lot of FPS games and on prior tried LCD's the side to side turning would create motion blur that would make me sick to my stomach. This monitor is a real treat to game on.
- Contrast to brightness is more than enough and quite pleasing.
- Did I mention widescreen?
- Once tweaked whites are white and color reproduction is very good with one exception(see dislikes)
- The stand is firm and looks pleasing on the desk too.
- I can do most graphic design and web work and I say most(see dislikes)

and my dislikes:

- Banding in the dark colors(gradients). As reviews state this monitor struggles with blacks and charcoals. Gradients in the deeper ranges suffer not smoothing out until mid tones.
- TEXT. Yes text. I know it looks good most of the time but when it comes down to the fine stuff this ones slacking. Dynamic text and pixel fonts are strong. Small size standard fonts is where this monitor suffers. When using standard fonts in sizes from 6 - roughly 14 the text gives off the appearance of tearing. This I fear could be enough for me to send this back as working in those font ranges is critical to my design work.
- Backlight bleed of course, if I decide to stay with this monitor I will be exchanging it only for this reason.
- * The anti-glare coating. There are times you don't even notice it and there's times when it casts almost a crystallized effect. I don't think this is a deal breaker, pretty sure I'd get used to it, but it can be annoying.

I've previously owned 5 lcd's and returned all do to each having a fault or two that bother me. Unfortunately I need a monitor that can handle gaming and design work while freeing up desk space. I've tried the Samsung 204T and it is by far the best LCD I've personally come across for design work. It was excellent in color repro and gradients, and handled all text sizes with ease. unfortunately it went back because I am one of those people highly sensitive to motion blur with sub 8ms lcd's.

This monitor I would highly recommend for those who want to game widescreen and surf the web. Photo editing and most graphic design would be ok, but for fine detail work I would avoid this LCD.

So if anyone else is not experiencing the tearing in text and banding let me know. Maybe I just have a lemon and should try another.

is 60hz normal for this monitor? it seems rather low. i dont want eye-stain.

eye strain on a lcd at 60hz is not bad, on a crt though its hell

LCD's don't need to be refreshed like a CRT phosporhus coating does, the glow effect after being hit by the electron beam lasts only a few milliseconds so it has to be constantly recharged with the ray tube gun, hence the "flicker" and "eye strain" CRT's are known with.

The pixels in LCDs are either always on or off. Refresh rate simply pertains on how fast data is sent and redrawn in the case of an LCD. You won't get eyestrain with an LCD

anyone play oblivion with a eVGA 256-P2-N553-AX Geforce 7600GT @ 1680 with this moniter? if so how is the performance? looking to spend that yearly tax return on this

Hi,

Thanks for the review. Just to check, did you manage to calibrate your screen with a display calibrator (ie, Eye One, X-Rite) etc?

I'm also intending to use this for photo editing, but however, the gradient problem would seem to be a deal breaker for me. Would it be possible to show some pictures on how bad the banding can get?

Thanks a mil. :)

Good luck to you. I play at 16x10 with an X1800XT and I still drop under 30fps outside sometimes. You'll need at least a 7900GT to be able to play with reasonable framerates. If I were you, I would downgrade to a VX924 and buy a better graphics card. :)

awesome monitor.i have an ati x850xt agp card.
at 1680x1050 is this enough card to play hl2,fear,far cry etc at decent framerates.
if not i may have to reconsider as i cannot presently afford to move to pci-e,and all the new hardware that would require
thanks

well, i'm running a 7900GT and i can play HL2 at 1680 with everything turned up, and i get 90+fps average (80+ on Lost Coast). Fear doesn't fare as well, and i have to turn down the effects. Far Cry is similar to HL2 at these resolutions. in Fear and Oblivion, i just cut the res down to 1280x800, and i get pleasing FPS with everything turned up med/high, with Bloom (on Oblivion) and 4x AA.

i know that we don't have the same card, but maybe you can look at what i've been seeing, and gauge your experience accordingly.

the bottom line is that 1680 is asking alot from your card, but if you're not completely hung up on getting the max res, you'll do fine at 1280x800 in most games, i'll wager.

heh this is where an SLI or Crossfire set up would come into play

thanks for your reply.perhaps too much monitor for my card  .i really don`t want to drop
the res to play games, which to me defeats the reason i would like to get the monitor
thnx again

I'm really liking mine so far!

is this backlight bleeding?

backlight.jpg

Looks like it,but not too bad,the camera probably makes it worse then it really is.If you are happy though, who cares really ?? ;)

That's seems to be the same pattern of backlight bleeding that everyone has on this LCD but your camera is obviously making it seem much worse.

Nice job on the reviews of this monitor (vx2025). I was watching the prices at different sites on it the past few days, and today it just dropped to $389 at buy.com (shipped), so I snagged one. Figured I'd let everyone know about that price. Picked up my tv tuner and x800xt platinum ed. today from ups also. It'll be about a week before the monitor is here, but I'll have everything ready for that bad baby. Considering I'm upgrading from a 15" Samsung LCD (4 yrs old) and an old ATI 9700 pro, this should be ineteresting.....And theres quite a few new games I still need to play.......so long social life (hahaha). But seriously, I can't wait to get this monitor. I'll add a small review myself after I give it a good run.

Hmmm. After the Buy.com sale hit, I knew what I had to do. $359.95 :p later and I now need a vid card uprgrade too from my 9800 Pro. What's the opinion on a 6800 GS AGP to get me by for another year of BF2 until I can upgrade the whole computer to a PCI-E setup? I'm not looking for maxed out settings, just playable framerates at the native resolution.

I ordered it last night from Newegg at 409.99. Today I get home from work and see they are now selling it for 399.99. Damn them ;)

Got mine from newegg.. 2 stuck pixels almost in the center.. not sure what to do now. Viewsonic wants 10 or more stuck/dead pixels for them to replace it. Next LCD I get will be locally. I also had fun reading all the bad stories about viewsonics customer service and their turnaround time for RMA.

Dude, you're playing on my clan server! =S= That's awesome. I just ordered up one of these. See you on the battlefield.

Ok, so I have the panel - it's great, but BF2 doesn't look right still. How'd you "hack" it to get it to work right.

Thanks for any help.

Mine looks the exact same. Whats weird si you can move around at different angles and it will fade away. My g/f's monitor has bad back light bleading and no matter what angle you move at you can see it plain as day on a black screen. Am I the only one with some stuck pixels? Just my luck.

Just edit your battlefield shortcut in your desktop.
You will have something like this:

C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1280 +szy 1024

You can change these numbers to anything you wish, such as 1680x1050 for widescreen monitors. But be carefull, the game will run not in real 1680x1050, it will be an extrapolation, it means you will have a light deformation but nothing really bad...
Hope they will allowed in a next patxh the 16/10 resolution, as they've done for Call of Duty 2. really beautifull a real 1680*1050 FPS game !

I just picked one (VX2025) up at CompUSA last night. $399.00 after $50.00 mail in rebate. Normally I would have ordered online and saved a few bucks, but if I had any problems, I didnt want to mess with shipping back and waiting for another one to arrive. So far I would say I am happy. Definitely some backlight bleeding as seen is previous posts, but only noticable in a full black screen. I definitely dont like the auto screen scaling though on non-native resolutions. And I cant get my 7900gt to keep it from doing that. Seems the driver doesnt quite work right with the screen. Hopefully a fix will come soon. I fired up COD2 to test out gaming and I will say widescreen gaming kicks ass.

got mine today....absolutely beautiful!!!

CS:Source is ghosting fairly badly...IMO:(:(

more testing to do:)

Bascially i think i need something bigger than my 17" LCD (Philips 170SFB) and i can get the viewsonic from NCIX for around $566 Canadian that includes (Taxes, Shipping, 30 No Dead Pixel Warranty) and was wondering if this is a good deal. And yes i am aware there is also the Dell 2005FPW but me right now that unit is $650 Canadian before taxes, etc.

I was wodnering if this is a good buy.

$566 Canadian = $496.564 USD Approximately.

Cheers,

Lcdguy
