I am going to be building a computer soon and i was wondering which one is better, from your expierences or others you know, i will probaly watch some movies but mostly it will be for gaming.... and surfing the web and other normal stuff...... which one is best for my needs?

I have used the Viewsonic VX2025. It's a fine monitor, good colors, sharp picture. The only downside is it's inability to control the size of the image. In other words, if you run something at 1024x768 (a normal 4:3 aspect ratio), the monitor will stretch this to fill the entire screen (which is a 16:10 aspect ratio) and the image will look rather distorted.

On the other hand, from what I've read the Dell 2007 allows you to control the aspect ratio. You hit a button, and the 1024x768 would appear in its proper aspect ratio, with black bars on the side.

So that appears to be the main difference between the two. If you will always be running at the native resolution of 1680x1050 (or another 16:10 aspect ratio like 1280x768) then you will never deal with this issue, and in that case you could go with the cheaper Viewsonic.

You are willing to spend $529 plus tax for a Dell 2007FPW? I know for a fact that the price will go down to around $350 in few months with their normal 25% off and Dell coupons. I mean I have a 2005FPW and I love it, but come on... We're talking about Dell here. Not even Samsung or NEC. If you're going to spend that much money, I'd definitely get something else with better specs. Look into Gateway 21".

I agree. No sense in ordering the dell until you have a coupon for it. If you are going to spend that much, get the Gateway.

Gateway 21 over Dell 2007, with all problems gateway(backlight, buzz, etc) has I suggest you stay away from that. Im in market for new monitor too and i was looking at samsung but now im leaning toward 2007 or 2407 when it comes available. You also got to consider if you going to use a console on it. Does anyone know how xbox 360 looks on Dell 2007

I just got the viewsonic myself and its friggin awesome.

I have not noticed any ghosting, no dead pixels, good black levels...I got it from Frys with a $100 rebate. Sweet deal.

I went compusa to get a viewsonic they had on sale.
(WISH I could see these 2 side by side but I know there is no way)

Well I just got back from CompUSSR and they are a bunch of assholes.
I wanted to see the viewsonic and they had one on display playing a movie.
WOULD NOT show it with any other inputs.
I asked if I purchased one if they would take it out of the box before I left to see
dead pixels and ....etc

NOPE

whats your policy on this...take it home try it and see?

well dead pixels are between you and the company.
NO exchanges or refunds excepts for defective product!!!!

ok wtf do they mean by defective????

How is dell with exchanges/refunds?

I guess I will get a dell when one goes on sale.

man compusa sucks almost as much as worstbuy

sparks

hmm..same boat as everyone else here trying to decide..seems like nobody can give a definite answer over which is better :|

I bought the Gateway and returned it to Best Buy yesterday.

Two deal breakers for me:

-component inputs are way too dark as to be useless, so why pay extra for them?

-and then even under DVI/VGA, darker images lose all detail and contrast if you look at them head-on. You have to view the screen from an angle to see them clearly. Again, why pay extra for that?

So I don't think the Gateway is a viable alternative, not at $600.

I'd agree it's between the Dell 2007 and the Viewsonic. Like I said earlier, if you don't care about aspect ratio control, go with the Viewsonic. I've used it and it's a good monitor.

Im gonna have to say viewsonic, but i play everything at 1680 and my desktop is at 1680 also, so i wouldnt know about this aspect ratio talk.

I'm stuck in the same boat as you guys as well. :(

For me, I'm tending to go with the Dell for its HDCP/composite video inputs, and it's tilt/protrait/swivel functions.

But then again, it's an easier choice for me, as both displays are rather close in price on my side here.

But then again, I wish there was a shootout on image quality between them both, as I would be using them to do some critical Photoshopping.

btw the 2007 doesn't have component input, it has composite. Reread the specs, it caught me out the 1st time too

The Dell 2407 has components inputs, not 2007(yeah that sucks)

So Xbox 360 inputs are through the VGA port? That's gonna suck, right?

same boat as alot of ppl in this thread.... by any chance has there been a review of the 2007fpw?
