Quality of mice these days....

Is it just me or does it seem like the quality of the mice today kinda sucks. I'm pretty picky about my mouse. I like for all the buttons to be firm and clicky. I don't like floppy buttons, hmm sounds like I'm talking about something else doesn't it. :eek:

Anyhoo, I've tried 3 different MX518s and they all have the floppy buttons, which I can't stand. I truely don't think they're suppose to be that way, but maybe I'm wrong. I've also tried quite a few G5s to no avail. Maybe I'm just too picky and should just give it up.

Does anyone know of a mouse out there that has firm clickable buttons?
 
I'm not talking about the model, I'm talking quality of build here. If no one else feels this way that's fine. I guess it's just me. Though it's almost like if you buy a $20,000 car you'd be right picky about everything on it. You spend $50 to $100 dollars on a mouse I'm going to be picky about it. If it's a $10 dollar mouse then I suppose you get what you pay for.
 
I love my MX518. Very solidly built. I've dropped it countless times due to my crappy wire routing through my desk, and it hasn't even scratched. My Microsoft Intellimouse on PC #2 is pretty well-built as well, but I don't like it (personal preference, however).
 
floppy buttons??

Logitech produces the highest quality mice I have ever dealt with. And their support is amazing.

I used to drop my old MX700 when I had a small desk, dropped it maybe 5 times in around 4 years and nothing was wrong with it. Buttons on any of the logitech mice I have used have never been "floppy". Or maybe I just don't understand what you mean.
 
....still rockin' the Micro$oft IntelleMouse 1.0a here. Never felt the need for anything else; buttons are firm and have a nice "click" to 'em. Put some teflon on the feet and I'm good to go.....

If you lightly tap on the button and it moves up and down. So basically there is movement up and down before you get to the point of where the button will click. Does that make sense? It sorta has a loose feeling to it.

well, hopefully you and i are on the same page when it comes to "clicky". my lil' bro has the G5, and i find it floppy or "mushy", if you will. it's a damn good mouse, but the ultra-light give of the main buttons doesn't suit me at all.

i use a Razer Diamondback, and i think it's an excellent alternative. very clicky, and very smooth. the only caveat i would offer is that the buttons don't have much "throw" to them, if you get my meaning. the click itself is very pronounced, but the distance the button travels to full depression is quite shallow. for myself, this resulted in a day or two of false clicks, where the buttons seemed to depress just under the weight of my fingers. after a couple days, i learned that my hand mouses best when it's actually resting on the desk, rather than palming the entire mouse. this improved my movement and the "false clicks" went away. anyway, hope that didn't scare you off. the Diamondback is every bit an awesome mouse with plenty of click.

the only other mice i have extensive experience with are the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer (Elite or Pro, or whatever) which is clicky, but a bit slow and cumbersome when it comes to movement and twitch.

lastly, the Logitech WingMan Gaming Mouse is one of my all-time favorites. i think it's where Creative (or that "fatility" guy) got their inspiration for their new weighted mouse. it's a fat, triangular design with VERY clicky keys, decent throw, and good action. sucks that it's a BALL mouse, though. :( i still use mine from time to time with my lappy, anyway.



update: now that i see what you're after with that last post, i am SURE you will like the Razer Diamondback, as it lacks the long "throw" that you don't like (as i mentioned above). it's JUST click, and that's it. in fact, i challenge you to try to push the Diamondback's buttons without getting a click, and only a click! with mine, it quite literally cannot be done. you can't feel any sort of "gap" in the process. :D

My 518 doesnt feel loose liek you describe, same with my 900. Build your own and try to market it!
 
I had the G5 right after they were released and it was great except the + button was a bit flaky. You'd push it, but if you didn't push down hard enough it wouldn't change the resolution of the mouse. I now have a MX518 and it's close to being as good as it get's with mice except once I'm done for the day and then come back to use it the next day it acts like the left button got stuck overnight. It's REALLY weird what it does. I may just have to live with it, but it drives me nuts. Once I've clicked it it seems fine until I leave it alone for quite a while. :eek:

Yeah Logitech mice are built like bricks and have some of the best clicking response of any made. I feel like I'm going to break a Microsoft mouse when I pick them up, they always have crap rattling around the inside and just feel hollow and weak. Razer mice are also well built, but the click on those doesn't have the right level of feedback, its too "soft." I feel like I can click Logitech mice faster because the button feels more nimble and springy.

well, i tried to give you a decent rundown of my Razer mouse. either you don't agree or you missed it.

weird; my opinion is an exact 180 of yours. different strokes, i suppose...
 
I've got to go with logitech here, I've got the mx1000 I love the hefty feel of it, the buttons don't have extra play when I click and I'd thrown it across the room on at least one occasion, not recommended.

The MX1000 doesn't have extra play? I got one with my Logitech 5000 keyboard and it's buttons are loose as hell. They may not have extra play, but they feel like they're about to fall off.

I've looked at Razors before, but the click does feel too soft for me. Thanks for your suggestion though.

I like the sound of the Gman X series of mice.
 
personaly, i agree that the quality of mice as well as keyboards is not really worse, just different. i like the old ibm keyboards because of the loud *CLICK* of the keys. opions differ from person to person, my friends think that the old ibm keyboards are crappy, its the same for mice i geuss
 
I have been using a MS explorer 3.0 for years and cant find satisfaction with any other. I currently have an MX 518, a G5, MX 700 and an MX 1000 here that just don't feel right. The best of those is the MX 518, but I just can't seem to get any of them dialed in. The G5 has a coating on the sides much like antiskid, this just feels awkward.

I had a razer diamondback, the eye was off center compared to the MS mouse, causing the swing of my aim to be off on the screen. I always end up switching back to the 3.0 after a few hours. I guess I am just a creature of habit.

You are seriously exaggerating... The buttons on the mx1000 couldn't possibly feel like they were about to fall off... they are integrated into the top shell of the mouse...

If you are talking about the extra buttons on the sides and top then maybe you could say that but honestly, if the two main buttons feel good then the rest is just gravy.

You should probably lower your standards, because Logitech, Microsoft and Razer are the only games in town that are worth a damn for mice,...
 
I think your main gripe with the MX518 and any MX5xx series is the fact that the button is molded from the shell. That is what's giving it the flimsy feel. I have an Mx310 which have dedicated buttons, apart from its shell -- I guess you would say it's more of the traditional design.

The buttons barely take any pressure to click, yet, they withstand the force of full, all out, adrenline pumped gaming. When they move they click on mine. There's no partial movement without a click at all.
 
I think quality on Mice and Keyboards was improved... remember Boomslang 2000 anyone? Elite keyboards?



My MX510, MX518, and G5 works dreams... and I'm abusive on it and use it a ton. I went through 4 or 5 Razor Boomslangs back in the day when they came out to give you an idea.
 
Can't say much for the MX518, but I know I run the MX510 and have not had a single complaint about it. I do understand some of the "Feel" might be off as there isn't a seperate button as its molded into the case, but I have abused my MX510 for the last year.

The only qualm I've ever had is the size. I went from a Full Sized Optical (one of the first Logitech Opticals), and that felt great in my big mits. Going to he MX510 has been a chore as I can only fit 2 of my 3 main fingers on the mouse. But, after a few days I got used to it.

I really wish Logitech continued to make that first optical with the new Optical Readers (IE: Their first Black w/Blue LED Lighting one). That to me was the most comfortable mouse, but its now all but impossible to find them (And their resolution is no where near as good as the newer stuff).

Ohh well. Only thing I ever say is stay away from Wireless... their lag always drives me crazy (Yes, even the MX1000). Its not necessarily lag once you're using them, but the lag for them to initially respond. But, I'm weird like that.

idk wut the hell ur talking about but you must be extremely picky or have the threshold of a baby cuz i've used tons of mice from several brands. if i did feel as if there was something wrong, it was prob a bad egg
 
Ok, I guess I'm just too picky. To each his own I guess.

I'm not a fast and furious gamer, I do play when I get the chance, but not for hours at a time. Hopefully I'll find what I'm looking for.

You could always try what I did with a Razer Viper, I pulled the mouse switches out of an old ms scroll (really good omron switches like the V3 has) and replaced the vipers crappy ones. It voides the warranty but you get back the solid mouse clicks.

Yes, I quite agree that the MX-510 is an excellent mouse, as is the MX-500. I have used an MX-500 here at work for well over a year and it is still just as tight and firm feeling as the day I bought it. I use the MX-510 at home. I use both for HLDM gaming and they are quite excellent IMO.
I actually like the MX-500/510 a lot better than the MX-310 I had prior to the 510 purchase. The 510 is a bit larger than the 310 and is the perfect size for my hand.

As for wireless - I've heard good and bad but since I don't want my batteries dying in a game I stick to the corded models. Plus it harder to throw it very far when you are getting frustrated because someone is pwning you :p ;)
I have also heard good things about the Razor Diamondback as well but have no 1st hand experience with them.

I think I've found "the one"!!!!!!!

I finally got an MX518 where all the buttons are a nice solid click, no flopping around here. Does kinda wobble on the desk though, which is a bit weird. :confused: But, I may just have to live with that.

Let me teel you this: I'm sold on Logitech. Over the last 4 years I have bought:

Elite Corded
Cordless Mouseman Optical ( as part of Cordless Desktop)
MX700 (by itself)
MX700 w / Keyboard
MX1000

So that's 5 Logitech's, about 1 a year. Been using the MX700 Desktop for over a year at work. The KB crapped out, but the mouse is still going strong. Using the MX1000 ever since they first came out, and the only thing I would get now is the G7 cordless.

The real negative about Logitech is they refuse to make their products KVM compatible.
 
You Sir, must have some realy heavy fingers! I just ran a "floppy button-click test" on my Mx518. And, it is about as floppy as a waffle.(Pre-syrup)

1a. tried to click the button o' so softly, but to no avail! It either clicked full on, or not at all.
1b. I gave it some good clicks, everytime I felt it go down good and make a hearty clickity-clack noise, not no floppity-flap clicks.

2. I moved around my mouse a good deal, and my fingers.. not once did the buttons move.(go down, as if trying to click in a floppy way)

So I've come to this conclusion, you sir.. must have 10lb fingers.. which only states one thing. You, are an abomidable snowman.

As for the Razors.. if you thought the Mx518 felt cheaply made.. you will be dissapointed by the Razors. I know they're good mice or w/e yada yadda, but oh boy they are about 1/5 the weight of the Mx518 (I can't use one.. feels cheap to me)

Ps.. Floppy tests ftw. :p ;) :cool:
