I want it to be atleast 20 inches big but what is the best widescreen montior, i can give or take 100 or 50.thanx

Ive got the gateway FPD2185w and love it. Its my first lcd and can gladly say im not going back to crt. I get minimal ghosting, no dead pixels and the backlight bleed is very very slight in the four corners. I got it for $519 after a 20% off coupon from office depot.

I used the top coupon for mine. The bottom one says no monitors, but the top doesnt. The coupon is only good till the end of this month.

NEC 20WMGX2 if you can find it for a reasonable price. I know someone who ordered it for $700 and that barely fits in to your $600+give 100 budget.

Gateway is great. I have had it since NOV and I only have one problem with it. I wish that the VGA connection allowed for video scaling to be controlled from the monitor itself as I use a tvbox to watch tv on the gateway (I know it can take the inputs, but it has no remote and when I turn the cable box off, picture would still remain on the screen.

acer al2032wa gets my vote!! had a dell 2005fpw and this wipes the floor with it!!! Had no problems, amazing picture

What about the new samsung 215tw? Supposedly the same panel as the gateway and a little cheaper too. Its one I'm considering.

$50 less MSRP, 3 year warranty on the Samsung and 1 year on GW. And a built-in speakerbar if that's your thing. It has all the same features and inputs as the GW. The GW stand seems a bit nicer but other than that and the styling, they seem like the same monitor when I checked them out at BestBuy.

Like Firecrotch :confused: said, you can get the GW for around $530 either at OD with a coupon or CircuitCity puts it on sale from time-2-time for the same price so the cost is around the same as the Samsung.

Some people have reported failing DVI ports on the early GWs and a buzzing noise on some of them. Any problems with the Samsung are unknown because it just recently became available.

For me, the extra warranty on the Samsung adds value.

Also check out the Viewsonic VX2025wm which is a good panel that you can get for substantially less than $600 but lacks some of the features of the Samsung/Gateway.

is the 215TW HDCP Compliant? does it have component imputs? I can only find it on J&R site.

HDCP = Yes
Component = Yes
Also at BestBuy.

Hmmm. Doesn't show up on Froogle or Pricegrabber.

Well I bought the Gateway this weekend and I like it a little less each day.

Basically it's a decent monitor, but like others have pointed out - when you look at it head-on, the darks are very dark. When you move your head to the side and view it at an angle, they lighten up (to normal). This was only a quibble at first for me, but more and more it's getting on my nerves. I'm literally playing my games while sitting at angle to compensate for it.

Also very annoying is the fact that the Gateway's component inputs are essentially useless. Anything you run through them (Xbox 360 or DVD) comes out too dark, and no amount of brightness/contrast adjustment can fix it.

So I'm asking myself what's the point of spending the extra $$ if I can't use component?

I'm still within my 14-day return period from Best Buy and I think this sucker is going back.

EDIT: if I had a little more money, the widescreen LCD I'd buy without hesitation is the HP F2105. Terrific monitor, they have it at Circuit City. Google it to find some reviews, you'll see it generally scores higher than any other monitor.

Is there a site or something that proves that with more pictures and specs? All I see is the basic info from the best buy site. A review would be nice. Unless its so new...but usually best buy has stuff after e-tailers..Hell its not even on samsungs site.

Another for the viewsonic vx2025w. This monitor is amazing. I had a 2005fpw and 2405fpw, with my brother with the 2005fpw right now. This monitor is definitely better than the Dell. Colors on both of course look great, but something about it just makes this one better. He even comes over into my room and complains about how much nicer it looks.

Ghosting issue is much better than the dell as well.

And for 420 shipped, this is the way to go. You can use the rest of the money for a video card upgrade.

so your Viewsonic VX2025w replaced your 2405fpw? What does "much better" really mean with regards to ghosting and better than what - the 2005, 2405 or both?

What is it that you want proved? I went to BB and saw the connections. Right on the DVI connector it says (HDCP). You'll see if you go to BB. You're going to need to go to the store yourself to really get an impression of the picture quality.

There is some information at widescreengamingforums.com in the 'Hardware' and 'User Reviews' forums.

I just set mine up about an hour ago. Very good colors and sharp text. Much better text than I've seen on most LCDs.

The only issue I have is some significant backlight bleeding in the "X" pattern while in movies. Seems so many LCDs are having this problem that it is hard to get one that doesn't have some bleeding in the corners. I don't watch that many movies and for $350 shipped from Amazon, it's hard to complain (but I still do).

I'm not sure I would buy it to replace a 2405 though. :)

That's why you have to look at the connector like I said in my post. It doesn't mention it on the box. Do a search on the Net for the user manual. It's mentioned there too. Do a bit of research for yourself.

Manual

The VX2025wm does not have HDCP.

Replaced 2405fpw because of the price. That monitor was way too expensive. One monitor for me versus one for me and my brother is an obvious choice. 800 is a great price for the Dell, relative to other LCD prices. But that is a lot of money for just a screen when you could get half of a system for that price as wel with a screen. But if you have the money, go for it.
