Since I'm new to Oblivion I have a few question on the guilds.

Do you have to choose only one guild? Or can you participate in all of them (one at a time?)? I was approached by the Dark Brotherhood. If I don't do their quest, does this mean I don't join? Is it worth joining? Benefits? I'm sure you'll get negative rep, etc.

Are these guilds worth participating in?

Thanks!

There are only 4 guilds in the game. You can be in all 4 at once if you choose. Im members of everyone except the Dark Brotherhood. Im liking the Fighters Guild alot because you get gold for the quests you do. Im sure the Thiefs guild is the same, but my sneak and lockpick skill is horrible and dont want to spend time building that.

BTW, how do you get into the Dark Brotherhood Guild?

Once you beat all the quests a particular guild has to offer, you become Guild Master and thats where the benifits are.

i got in the dark brotherhood by killing someone (a pirate). went to bed in a secure location (thats the key, needs to be secure) and you get visited by a member of the guild.

There are conflicts, i was doing a mission for the thieves guild and i had to kill someone to get a key from him to take something from his room, and there was no way around it, he attacks you right when he sees you and you need his key to get into his room, it would be far too difficult to get around killing him. but he is a member of the mages guild, and once i killed him it instantly said that i was suspended from mages guild for killing a member. So now I have to do a BS collection quest to get back into the mages guild. But for the most part, there's no problem being in multiple guilds at once.

And the dark brotherhood has by far the best benefits to you at an early level, although i haven't done anything in the fighters guild yet since i heard about the bugged quests in there. They give you some awesome light armor after you join, and then you get cool new gear if you complete the bonus objective for each mission, which i found pretty easy to do.

bah, why is it, that when you try and be a good guy you get dicked out of the kick ass loot at least up front

and when you go the bad guy route....you gain so much more quicker

If I join the Dark Brotherhood guild, will it immediately make me a marked man? I want to be able to walk through the towns without guards running after me. I understand that if someone sees me commit a crime, then the guards will come, but simply by joining am I going to be in trouble? Thanks.

The idea of the Dark Brotherhood is killing without being seen. Since most NPCs in the game aren't even aware of the Brotherhood's existence, joining won't get you into any trouble.

I'm at the Eliminator level in the Dark Brotherhood, guards don't chase me but then again, no one has seen me off anyone ;)

I am also in the Thieves Guild.

Its kinda funny, Dark Brotherhood says you can't steal from your marks, Theives Guild says you can't kill your marks.

Solution? Kill guy, complete quest, go back, steal away.

Oh and playing a good guy??? Whats the point, evil is so much more rewarding :D

That's odd, because thieves guild missions require that you don't kill anybody -- never necessitating it. There's always a way to sneak by those guys. If they are awake during the day hours, come back at night and visa versa.

There are many places to join the Mages Guild. There is one in Bravil and most of the other towns like Skingrad, etc. Just talk to the people there. If I recall correctly the quest to get in is a bitch because you have to get recommendations from all the other towns. Pretty stupid.

To all of you people not joining the Dark Brotherhood. Do it. I'm a "Listener" which is essentially a direct link to the Night Mother. The gear they give you is sweet and you get free money :D. I had no conflicts with the Thieves Guild either, which I happen to be Guildmaster of.

The Dark Brotherhood has some very nice offerings, plus that ancient door is sweet looking :)

That is the only conflict I have heard of between the quests :).

Thieves and Dark Brotherhood are great quests, though I am finding the Dark Brotherhood ones to be the most fun out of the three guilds I have advanced several quests into (Mage, Dark Brotherhood, Thieves) :). Good times!

Thanks, I was able to find someone in a city where one of my Dark Brotherhood missions was, which I failed miserably because I couldn't figure out how to loosen a moosehead.
Anyways, got it, and all my weapons are fully charged now..woohoo!

Have you been able to find all the flowers yet?
I have had more luck finding the damn Nirnroots than these Dragon flowers. I have also had a hard time finding 20 of the redwort, I have 12 and 0 of the other ones.

This is really fucking me over since I picked Magic as one of my main focuses.

I'm having trouble with my mages guild quest... I think I have completed everything but they still tell me I haven't at the Arcane Academy, ideas? I have not yet done anything for the main storyline, could that be it?

Devnull: Did you talk to the person named Erema after finishing the Fingers of the Mountain part of the recommendations? You won't get credit for it until you do, even once you've turned the book in to the Mage's Guildmaster at the local hall.

That security skill is going to be worth building up, because some of the best loot in the game is locked in the dungeons.
