Talk to me about Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

Does anyone actually know any place in Central Florida area that is getting the game IN on the 20th? Everyone I talked to says the 21st.
Live in VA now sorry.

I've seen all the videos for this now, and all I can say is "WOW"

I like the stealth elements and the fact that you can sort of create your own class, depending on how well the system works I might very well become a Thief character crossed with an assassin, two characters you can play very little in todays games.

Could it be possible to be so good as a thief/assassin that you only emerge at night, travel the streets in the shadows and the world will never know you're there?

It would be very cool to be a more "unknown" character of which all the people around you are very unaware you're there, more of a rumour or an unseen ghost, saving the world from peril but never to be seen.

After seeing the AI video I was very impressed, i like the way people have feelings towards you and that effects the conversation etc. One thing i definatly hope they've added into this system is a "fear" system where NPC's and even standard enemies might have a fear level based on how renound you are for being merciless or unforgiving.

Most games with some form of NPC's and combat lack this trait, I remember loving fallout 2 soooo much and playing it for months at a time, but being serverly dissapointed with no fear system, you and a possy of others should be known for tearing apart whole towns or groups like the slave traders, yet no one ever fears you, they just run at you with their crappy weapons and dont stand a chance, only fleeing when they're low on health which is to be expected, but not the same thing.

wow just wow.... at first i was like hmm dont no y ever1 is so hyped about this game.... and now after watching bout 10 videos of it, including all the countdown and E3 videos, and reading this extensive 7 page review

NVIDIA has has informed us they will be releasing a new driver on Wednesday March 22nd at NZone. This new version ForceWare 84.25 will contain specific performance enhances to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion being released Monday the 20th.

Our developer relations team worked closely with Bethesda to optimize game performance, which also included making some driver changes to fix/enhance performance in certain areas.

Our performance testing shows no two benchmark runs are identical in exterior scenes, due to Oblivion randomly placing grass and rocks, changing the amount of grass, and varying other aspects of the terrain.

We will most likely be adding this game to our video card gaming test suite. So if you are looking forward to this game as much as we are be sure to pick up this new driver when it is released.

Im in the UK and the best place (or at least cheapest) to get games is play.com unfortunatly they're not in stock for 5 days, according to them the release date is the 24th

Better check in town tomorrow during lunch to see if they have it in stock, this is one of the few games im definatly going to buy ;)

Very good ideas... Fable: The Lost Chapters had a fear system in it and it really enhanced the game.

Umm, say what? The terrain generation doesn't actually randomly generate terrain, they merely used it in-development and then went in area's and fleshed them out by hand, etc.

The actual game world is the same for everyone, it's not like daggerfall or anything.

Yes, but maby it randomly generates grass/rocks? I dunno but I'm definitly picking it up tuesday.

How exactly will you get a standardized benchmark from this game? There are no "levels" and there are a LOT of gameplay variables. I don't understand how you can derive a standardized test from it...?

Just play the game, it is that simple :)

That is how I do it with every game, play the game like a gamer.

Yeah, I'm more interested on how it will perform in normal gameplay then anything else, of course I'll be playing tuesday after work and wednesay all day (took off), so I should have a pretty good handle, heres to hoping that the game will run smoothly on my rig at 1600x1200 Max settings, 0xAA/16xAF (HDR), cheers, only approx 3x hours to go.

I freshly defragged, put all my media on the 2nd hdd, updated all my drivers, OCed everything, but this game is going to kill my amd64 3000, 1 gig, and 6600gt. :hs:

Games are (mostly) always released on a Monday or Tuesday in the US and on Fridays in the UK.

Don't know why, but it's always been that way.

I rarely get hyped for games anymore but I am really hyped for this one. It is going to punish my computer, but that is okay.

The problem being of course, is that each run can be different and different loads maybe placed on the cards at different times, AI may decide to do something decidedly more complex one time and not others.

Only averaging LOTS of unique (but similar) runs will give you a good idea of the likely performance, especially when its the servere drops in FPS that really effect frame rate, the average not always meaning a great deal.

It's good that you're so true to gaming and gamers but for comparison purposes I think you need to be doing a lot of runs.

How many passes do you use?

3 is a good for an average for a set path (traditional benchmarking) I'd say you need more for a natural play through a section of a level, maybe 5-7 passes.

As I understand it from the videos the terrain (or rather the objects on the terrain) are proceduraly generated in real time, each users layout will be different.

Obviously landmarks such as dungeons and other large uncommon objects/areas will be static, and the ACTUAL terrain, the heightmapped ground, will be static as well.

I think as far as tools for building it, i expect they specify where they want light, medium or heavy forest or something to that effect and based on these preset variables the engine will create the world arround you, based on probably how steep the terrain is, what height you're at, how shadowed it is etc.

Does that mean that when you're exploring/wandering through the woods, you won't be able to rely on natural landmarks to find your way back? Cuz when you leave an area it will be regenerated next time you come back to it?

No it won't, the radeon 9250 doesn't have support dx9, the lowest radeon that you can play Oblivion on is the 9550, lowest Geforce is the 5200, but you better prepair for a slideshow with eather as thier very slow cards nowadays.

Well that is exactly what would happen when a gamer plays the game right, so it is a real world scenerio. We don't base our evaluation off of one run-through graphed. We play the game and get a feel for that game on a certain video card, which means we basically play the game all the way through. That is why our evaluation takes so long.

But what's "all the way through" in an Elder Scrolls game?

I believe its called "Beating the game"

There was still lots to do after finishing the main quest in Morrowind, no reason to expect Oblivion will be any different (unless there is a real end-game... I've been avoiding Bethesda's site for awhile.)

How do you "beat the game?"

"...it's completely open ended and continues on after you finish the main quest. The game never ends."

From an interview with Pete Hines.

Its a little unclear from the video card reviews that i've seen from HardOCP that the settings decided that is a maximum for playing any one game comes from playing the whole game through, it seems more like it comes from the benchmark thats done. But then I skipped over a lot of it.

I dont think you need to play the whole game through to decide what settings are best used, playing an RPG through would be pointless, just play it for a good few hours in different sections, indoors, outdoors, in battle, out of battle etc

Gamers in the real world dont play the game through till the end just to work out what settings to best use, at least I dont. The first 3-4 mins of gameplay is enough to test what settings work best, often half way through a game i might tweak 1-2 settings as a trade off, maybe AA isn't worth it but more AF is.

Hope I'm ready for the game, I waited to order my system until just a few weeks ago:

Opteron 165 at 2.5ghz, 2x1GB Corsair PC500, A8R32-MVP, Asus X1900XT, Raptor 150GB, and my trusty 213t 1600x1200.

Can you tell I'm excited for this game?

I had Oblivion preordered MONTHS ago. I can't wait till it arrives on my doorstep on Wednesday! :D

Heck, ATM I'm playing Morrowind again :p
