Why are there no mmorpgs like the old MUDs and MUSHs ?

So I have to wonder.

Back in the old text based online RPG days, the games were actually about role playing. Now that they are all 3D-ified, they are all hack and slash. Why did this change? Why is there no single MMORPG with a graphical interface that is actually about the roleplaying element, where people stay in character, instead of just trying to kill things and level up? Anyone have any ideas?

because it's the users choice how they play the game.

You can play WOW like that, they have servers for it, is it enforced? I don't know.

You could get friends together and make a guild that does this, though you could do this in any MMORPG game.

You could do this with NWN.

The question is not, why are game developers not doing this for you, it is why are you not doing it for yourself?

Well, that is the thing. In the text based days, the users chose to mostly. In the graphical games days, the users don't choose to mostly. Why does adding pictures change things so much?

The popularity of mmorpgs with pretty grapichs, means more younger people, and more stupid people now play them.

It's not enforced. In fact, my brief venture into the RP realms for WoW did not turn up any worthwhile roleplaying. At all.

I used to play a D&D based MUD back in the day that had very strict RP rules. It was a blast.

That's kinda of a horrible generalization. I know quite a few people in their late 20's and 30's that play WoW and EQ2 that don't RP. It's not a problem of stupidity or age, it's a problem of even the RPers not doing it constantly, people not picking the correct servers, and people being douchebags -- which has nothing to do with intelligence or age.

I think the reason it was enforced on the old MUD's was because most of them were free and the admins could care less when they banned somebody; however, these mmorpgs are run by huge corporations which only make the game so they can make more money. If they ban somebody, they lose money -- more money than they lose by not banning these people. Because let's face it, the RP community, those who strictly play to RP and RP all the time, are a very very small portion of the mmorpg community.

you sure? I got a charectors name changed on an RP server because it wasnt WoW enough, the name was Munkle, doesnt seem bad to me? and people are just freaky on RP servers, I said i had to go eat dinner and some guy replied "what be this "dinner" thou speakth of? there be no dinner in Azoroth." ---- that ended my RP experiance right there.

All depends on how you play. I RP, not all the time, but often enough. My guild thinks i am a character, as i am always joking around and having fun. My excuse is that my dwarf hunter (WoW) is 1/8 gnomish on his mothers side. Certainly no game impact there, but ask people what they remember about my character, it's not what equipment i have or what honor rank i have, it's my CHARACTER.

So it all depends on what you want and if you are willing to put forth the effort to do it. I'd do it even if there was no one else doing it. :)

I play real life...... I play games to kill shit not make "e-friends" and pretend....

MMOs of today have interfaces and engines that are not condusive to a RPing environment, regardless of what type of server they're on. It's like being in an all-you-can-eat buffet (eg. an RP server) but everything they're serving is allergic to you (eg. non-condusive to RPing).

In MUDs and MUSHes, the players all focus on one thing: the text being displayed on the screen. This is great because all the RP is done there. In MMOs nearly all the RP is in the chatbox and takes a backseat to the graphical engine. The level of immersion of RP this way is rather lacking.

I found that most MUDs and MUSHes based on RP were pretty laughable anyway, all the serious RPers degenerated into Rennasaince Faire rejects that had no personality.
