A few weeks ago mny fiancees HD died in her ibook and although i can do the repair she has applecare and id rather themtake care of it for warranty issues (cost too.)

While I was there a "mac genius" was the one helping me, he asked me what was wrong and I told him my thoughts and how i came to that solution. After he had verified what I said, he started doing the paperwork for the repair and asked his manager to come talk to me about maybe working there.

While I am a systems admin for a small company, the benefits arent there at all, and they dont have any kind of services or healthcare available.

I understand apple to take great care of their employees.

I am consider taking a steb backwards (technology wise) from being an admin to working as a mac genius. The pay rate is slightly less (around 3-5$less an hour) but with apple i can get healthcare, benefits, possible tuition assistance etc.

Another perk is all apple techs get flown to cupertino and certified as apple repair techs.

so im on the third interview and background check phase. (hard to squeeze that in while working FT!) but they use a third party company to do background checks which is standard, however they couldnt verify a highschool/college job i had as a manger at a burger king (franchised) with bk corporate which is understandable because its franchised-run. They immediately called me and started asking for w-2's. Pretty respectable security for a simple background check.

Anyways...what do you guys think?
I think the tuition assistance alone would seal the deal, but opinions from others are always appreciated.

I think the decrease in pay is made up by the benefits and tuition assitance, not to mention, there is probably more growth opportunity at Apple than there is at a small company that doesn't offer you any benefits.

i concur, anyone who talks about their income without adjusting for benis just isn't quite thinking right. im sure you'd end up making up that hourly difference when calculated for benis...

Ill miss not working weekend, but im trying to time my hiring so that I can fly to cupertino for 4/1/06 :)

I know people that worked as genuises, flew to cali, the works. They hated working for the apple store, and quit very shortly after joining. But they still got to keep all the certs ;)
From what she tells me all they do anymore is iPod work, with the occasional hardware error, and a few PEBKAC errors.

Also, apple is very strict on employees reading "rumor sites" (that includes hardforum)

And just a note (not to threadcrap) but im 17, and they've offered me a job too.

I had more to add, but I forget, will add later. Good luck in whatever you choose!

bah...i should go in an show off a bit, try and get offered a job..all thats open here is a job as a creative...i could be one, but i REALLY (really meaning id rather be poor as shit and beg my parents for money, which i REALLLYYYYY am sick of having to do...) don't wanna be helping idiots in anything but photoshop/illustrator all day. and i know id get stuck helping a bunch of idiots in final cut express or something stupid like that

Yeah, Im looking at it from the perspective of where could it take me in say 5 years, will apple give me help with education (including apple certs?)

So im trying to base myself off of that. Ive been talking with the local FBI office (my dream job) and I have 2 more years til I can even apply, so I have to keep working at my education (college) and employment as well.

apple gave this person (in cali) all the apple certs /training for reatil and service (the service one is the one that matters)

and i'm told the test is a bitch

yes, you REALLY have to know your shit to get through training and actually do well.

Kaos- My advice is to get to know the store manager as well as you can as well as the head genius, they'll make all the difference in the world as to whether the job is fun or a bitch. Also keep in mind that a good 85% percent of your work will be with ipods AND you'll be dealing with customers...which can be a real bitch sometimes. The training (for both the genius and creative) and pretty much invaluable, and are even better if you plan to stay with this line of work.

feel free to pm if you have any other questions.

Then you lied about your age, they don't hire people who aren't 18 :D

What everyone says about the split up of the job is definitely something you have to think about. Customers are assholes with frequency, most of your time is spent helping people with iPods or boring errors. You do spend time working on computer and doing stuff like that but there is that customer aspect to think about.

It seems like a fun place to work, if you can deal with the customer interaction and be happy quite often.

I would go for it. When I graduated college a couple years ago I got a part time job doing IT work for a car dealership in Greensburg PA with no benefits. The pay was pretty good but the no benefits scared me. I finally got a job offer from an Intermediate Unit I applied for closer to home and that came with excellent state benefits. I couldn't pass it up and now I got great benefits and good pay (but its time for me to move on). They say you never know until you try. Plus some of the other perks sound great.
