Is it worth it?

I've seen a couple of these newfangled "upconversion" DVD players @ BB. Do they do what they claim? I have HDMI connections and need a new DVD player, but wasn't sure if their worth it.

Sony
Samsung

Are their other models, better models? Thanks :)

doesnt xbox 360 upconvert? for only  $150 more you could get a HD gaming machine too - think thats the way im going to go

I think it does it too with DVDs (atleast to 720p I think) but honestly the 360 has it's own set of problems one being that you still can't walk into any store and get one off the shelve at a decent price.

Anyways either one of those players looks good, I would probably go with the Samsung since it's cheaper and not a Sony (they make really good TVs though). Then again if you have enough extra parts laying around I would build a PC just for media playback, upconverting DVDs and all your media at the mercy of your remote. :)

I would love to see some linkage on the xbox360 upconverting. As far as I know, this is an internet propogated rumor like the one that says the 360 has an HDdvd drive with it.

lol They're saying that? Yeah the upconverting DVDs is most likely a total rumor, I guess they figure if it can upconvert Xbox games why not DVDs too?

well, the original xbox was 720 capable as well, just no games were done in it. there were plenty of games done in 480p though. all that and the dvd playback was still 480i. but the 360 is supposed to have more attention to home entertainment.

I definently disagree with the previous poster. Samsung makes quality products, and you won't be disappointed with their upconverting DVD player.

Plus, the Sony one sounds more like a childproofed POS imo:
child lock on tray

^a child lock?!? lolz? they're kidding right? If my brother touches my stereo, he gets thrown out the window :p

I had one of the first samsung upconverting DVD players for the mass market. It was OK, but I was dissapointed. But that was at least a year ago. 2 I think. either way, I have heard there has been much improvement in the upconverting area and the samsungs have a dcent rep. with anything like this I always recommend a try before you buy scenario.

when you have samsung employees telling you not to buy their product something is wrong i have a samsung dlp tv and i love it but the upconverting dvd is something less to be desired just chk avsforum and you will see all the posts about the samsung upconverting dvd players

I really like my Oppo dvd player. The quality is noticabley better than the Pioneer Elite player it replaced. For $200 I'm extremely pleased with my purchase. They also included some good quality cables because I bought it direct.

Even though my HTPC is setup with ffdshow there are quite a few discs that I dont want or need to rip to my server so having a DVD player still makes sense. Plus I still need something that Plays DVD-A discs too.

You know, the sad thing about DVD-A is that pretty much any good sound card like a Revo 5.1 meet the specs for playback yet it's locked into using only Creative's cra- I mean cards.

I checked the Oppo and noticed it said "Up Convert from 480i to 720p/1080i"...
That got me thinking, What if you play a backed up DVD? Will it or the other brands up convert to HD?
