Distilled Water + Few Drops of Bleach, good enough?

Is distilled water + a few drops of clorox bleach along with some blue food coloring good enough to keep my loop algae free?
 
i dont have antifreeze available + I don't have enough money for it, i dont drive :p a friend has told me that all i need to do is make the water toxic, so nothing will grow in it
 
Doesnt Bleach corrod copper or something or is it something else.

yeah, that's technically true, I just think antifreeze is the best solution for your problem - it's dual purpose and it costs like $8/gal. Anyway, if you don't have access to antifreeze, bleach is still not a great solution. You're better off with alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide, since they will cause way less damage to a system like that than bleach will. Bleach tends to react badly with a number of metals, including copper, steel, etc. which I'm sure are probably somewhere in your loop, if you used a decent waterblock and standard fittings/clamps.
 
Antifreeze costs about a buck/ gallon at Walmart or smiliar places. I think you can afford that.

you're thinking of window de-icer. I was at walmart about an hour ago, and antifreeze is ~$8/gal.

Hey man, when you save up weeks/months for something it's not exactly nice to find that you suddenly need $20 worth of stuff you didn't account for.
 
Just use straight distilled water until you can get hold of some anti freeze to add in. Don't use bleach.

Take some out of your parents car radiator? Or better yet just go to an Walmart parking lot, someones POS is always leaking a little there.

You only need like a dixie cup full, not that much to ask.

If you saved up that long, why would you now rush it and not do it the right way, like everyone is suggesting... the cost is extremely minor, it's the right way to do it... and you have spent good money on the system... are you willing to chance damaging the system you saved up for week/months for just because you are impatient and won't drop a couple bucks to do things the right way

i bought 16oz of pentosin blue from a guy in fs forum for 10 bucks shipped..

not putting antifreeze in the loop is penny wise and pound foolish

you have to worry about corrosion also .. not just the nasties

antifreeze is toxic and anticorrosive ..

you only need about 2-3 oz of it ... see if anybody has any in their garage

HEY BACK OFF!
If OCing a PC with a new WC set up, instead of eating isn't [H]ard, I don't want to know what is!
 
I'm only 17 :rolleyes: and in-between jobs and needed a quick fix, i understand that anti-freeze is the way to go, i'll try to pick up some this weekend, until then im running it with a little less than a cup of isopropyl alcohol + distilled water + blue dye, it looks alot better than those nasty green thermaltake tubing :D

Anything worth doing is worth doing right. Get some coolant. You'll want to be carefull about what you put in your loop. For one thing, im not sure I would want bleach going through my pump, not to metion the reaction it could have with other materials. I would shy away from putting household chemicals in the loop.
 
isopropyl aint bad, but if you have plexi in your loop it will crack it so you need to get rid of it if you do.
 
Dont put bleach into your water cooling setup, speeds corrosion and I believe it can even deteriorate your tubing.
 
small bottle of Algae Destroyer(for aquariums) costs $3 to $4, just add a few drops and it wont grow, add as you see the need
 
I use a few drops of washing up liquid.
It has worked wonders, I had no algae ever despite using clear tubing by a window for a year!
Its also a good water wetter/surfactant.

I hope you don't have any dissimilar metals in your loop.
 
Do not use bleach in your loop, it may kill off any biological growth in the water but chlorine is corrosive to metals. You can get pitting from it and over time maybe a small hole. Just use some car antifreeze if you on a budget, look for some on special or hell, siphon some out of your car :)
