Question on EVGA 7800gt's???

i forgot what the reason for the price differences was...but there's a reason. i got the cheapest one, the 515. no regrets here (other than buying an x850xt would've gotten me more fps/dollar)

get the n517. it's the only one with a chance of 1.6ns memory.

i have the 16, and i love it. the difference will probably be unnoticeable.

If I had to take a chance I would go with the n517 only because there is a greater chance you will net have to RMA. Lots of people have had to rma EVGA cards over at their forums. I would probably still buy one though.

I bought the 518, but when they were giving out the free mobo with it. i sold the mobo on ebay for around 80 bucks, so in the end, it cost me 289 or so for the vid card.. worked out well. it overclocked well with the stock cooler, around 510/1.22 or so. I just put a VF700 on it just to quiet it down a bit.

love it

517 is clocked at 470, while the 516 is clocked at 460. Plus the 517 has a copper heat sink. And I think the 518 is clocked at 445 or something. So the 517 is deffinately the way to go.

I got the 518, but I also got the free motherboard with it. Great deal in my case because I needed to replace my 875 DFI motherboard and get into PCI-E. My father has the same card and he got it to clock to 500 core and 1.19 on the memory. I would go with the 517 though if I didn't need the motherboard combo.

The 516 comes with the copper heatsink too and comes at the same clocks as the 517. Look under reviews you will see this too. The only difference is many more people have been having problems with the 516 being not able to run at rated speed than 517.

People think the 90nm process makes the 7800GT gods of overclocking, but there are plenty of 7800GTs out there that can not run at a suggested overclock speed

7800 series cards are 110nm process not 90nm . . . but yeah the earlier GT cores tend to overclock better than the later ones . . .

If I were to guess I would say that the cores of the 517 CO editions probably aren't "better" than the other editions . . .

I agree with the last quote. I bet the cores arent any different from the 515 to the 517, but for a 10 dollar price difference you have a better chance of getting better ram. Granted core speed plays a bigger effect than memory speed, I have seen some 7800GTs hit over 1200mhz which is the speed of the GTX.

wait...so whats the difference between the 516 and 517?...

"but for a 10 dollar price difference you have a better chance of getting better ram"

thats exactly why I took a gamble and bought the 517. I don't know if it payed off or not but I suspect maybe latency might be lower if it had better ram.

516 = 460 core
517 = 470 core

yea thats what I said, but some guy just said they were the same.

From what I last checked tigerdirect was selling the 517 as 460. But that was a few weeks ago. I don't know if the difference even exists anymore. I hope it doesn't mean future artifacts at stock on my 517. I really havn't test the stable oc of my 517 but it autodetects up to 493/1.14. I've only gamed a little at 490 and 1.20 but not more than 10 minutes.

Also I think the 518 is really a 515 to make the shit even more confusing. To be honest I'm not really that impressed with the performance jump between my 517 and my old pny 6800gt running 416/1110. Maybe I need to try better drivers or something.

I will trade you in a heartbeat. In fact I would s*it my pants if my card detected at 590 on the core. Mine only detects at 550 and is not stable over 525. But I must say I do have to call a little bs. Most 7800GTs do not run faster than 500 until you volt mod it.

The performance gap between an overclocked 6800gt and a stock 7800gt probably would not be that great. But a 7800GT at 500/1100 or greater is fast as hell. What games are you playing?

Baaahoops! I'm glad you pointed that out. I keep thinking 590 in my head and then feel depressed when I think about it twice. I'll correct that

It's 490....Sorry, it's my lack of taking ADD meds lately. I wish I got 590.

Nfw MW looked almost the same. CODII not a lot better but slightly. Far cry slightly better not alot. Now Qualke 4 did look quite a bit better but that is the only one that really stands out.

My N516 came clocked at 470/1200, but was advertised at 460/1100. It would not run right at these settings, so I had to underclock to get it to work right. I later did the BIOS flash for the N516, and now 'stock' speeds are 470/1100. It also has a copper HS.

So I think the clocks on the N516 there are wrong, but the difference between them all is negligible IMO. Maximum of 25MHz difference on the cores, and they can all OC. I'd say get the N517 or N516 because it has a copper HS

Mine came with the BF2 bundle and is a 256-P2-N537-AX.
What does that correlate to with these current models that are offered?
I've been wondering for a while which one would match mine if and when I go to get a 2nd one to go SLI with it.

i have the 518 mobo combo, and im able to get it to about 520/1.20 watercooled core and swiftech ram sinks with a 70cfm 80mm fan blowing up onto the mem. also volt modded to 1.5v on the core. but one time i tried to chekc the volts and i shorted somthing and the card turned off but then came backon when i restarted the system. but now the card will not autodetect more then stock setting for some odd reason. before iu shorted it it would hit 515/ 1.20 but i can still manually clock it to those clocks but running ati tool for artifacts it showes artifacts more then it did before. idk need to do more testing when i get my new memory.

FYI:
The part number is 516-AX despite what newegg/ZZF says
Q4 is included (OEM)
470 core
1100 mem
Copper HSF
purchased for $289 free 2nd day from ZZF (on 1/31/06
HDTV/VIVO cables included

I just got mine on 2/3/06 from ZZF. It came with Quake 4, and it was clocked at 470/1100. It runs perfectly stable, right out of the box.

I played Quake for about 3 hours, and had not a single artifact or slowdown in frame rate.

Taken off EVGA's site: "Lifetime Warranty is for all retail Graphics Card and Mainboard products ending in the part numbers AX, DX, or FX"

That might help you decide ;)

I've done 4 RMA's with my cards... the first two came with the wrong bios... had them flashed at 1.2 and got the flash, but some programs would read it as 1.1 and others as 1.2... and kept having problems. RMA'd it. The other ones had capacitors that broke during transit or whatever... I love eVGA for the no hastle swapping, but I had to cough up a lot of money to pay for shipping :( I could have ended up getting some GTX's.. ha!!

Anywho, I got the free quake 4 and CODII... Great games!

By the way... I see a lot of people were able to run their cards with the 1.2 memory... how is that? did they end up swapping heatsinks or what? I wish mine didn't have artifacting... it would be cool to have it at those speeds and work.

I have the same one and it's a 515. Vmodded to 590/1270. I bought a second 515 and vmodded it to 630/1370. Looking to take a chance on a 3rd 515 to match the 630/1370 card. Anyone looking for a water cooled 515? :D

BTw i baught that mobo 7800gt combo tyhe 518. the specs of the card are the same as the 515 corect me if im wrong?

i want to volt mod mine but where do u get those square resitor thingys? idk much about that stuff but im good at soldering and following directions.

I just RMA'd my brand new 517 (470/1100) card. It was artifacting all over the place and wouldn't even get me into the BIOS screen. Running a PCI for now until it gets back from teh egg.

There called trimpots (Variable Resistor). Just got to radio shack or an electronic store.

I had a similar issue to the 1st poster with my 516, however after I flashed my bios it was fixed and I was back to 460/1100 as default. From there I was able to get to the sppeds listed in my sig, 500/1.15 without any artifacting.
