iPod warranty: Will they send me a new one?

I'm about to send my Nano back to Apple under warranty because the battery only lasts about 6 hours even with the backlight and equalizer completely turned off. Does anyone know if they'll actually replace my battery or just give me a new ipod? Is it even possible to replace the battery in a Nano? I'm hoping for a new one since it's really scratched up...even though I've done nothing but put it in my pocket.

Also, anyone know how long the turn around time is for Apple warranty work?

Most of the time apple will verify the ipod and send a replacement. It is up to them to decide if they are going to send you a new one or a refurb. I would think you would get a refurb most of the time unless they don't have any in stock, then you would get a new one but I don't work for them so don't hold me to that.

So do the refurbs for sure come with a new case? As far as the insides go whether it's new or used doesn't reall make any difference...

The scratched case really doesn't matter because there are so many ways to clean that up. Personally, I used McGuiars Cleaner/Polish. It is an ultra fine polish that when rubbed on and done smoothly eill fill in and take out scratches and minor gouges. It worked great on mine. Made it look almost new. Another option is to use Brasso and a dremel.

If I were you, I would be more concerned with the condition of the insides of the iPod and not the shell. If you are that concerned with the appearance then buy an invisible shield.

i heard supposidly if you go to an apple store you can pay 29 bucks and get a new one right there or something???

Why would I care about the solid state electronics inside? They do not degrade with use or even misuse. The internal components either work or they don't work, as long as apple tests the replacement before sending it to me it will work exactly the same as a new one. It would be a different story if I had an iPod with a hard drive, but of course the Nano uses only flash memory.

My bad, I didn't realize it was a Nano, I must have misread. In that case then yeah, a new shell is all I would care about too. :p

yes, this is true... I did that at the Apple store in NY and I got a brand new ipod mini... ACTUALLY.... the guy was nice enough to wave the 30 buck fee for me.... but yea.... it is possible to pay for a new one right at the store for 30 bucks....

Don't know if this makes a difference, what with this being a different country and all, but when I was in the Sheffield (UK) Apple Store someone was getting their Nano replaced and when they asked if they were new or refurbished the Genius chap said all the replacement Nanos they got were brand new.

Whether he was telling the truth or not, well that's the real question.

it depends on the apple store u goto, because i went to one at twelve oaks here in michigan and the guy said bring in my mini and if it fails the tests thatll ill get a new one. Well i called up apple and they spewed some crap at me about a test theyd send my email and some other stuff. I mentioned wut the guy at the apple store told me because the guy on the phone said i would have to pay like 30 bucks s/h. He was shocked and like they arent really supposed to do that and that sometimes they can do it, but most apple stores dont have the stock to do that. So i went to the apple store, left it with them, it failed, i got a brand new mini :D

Sort of. This is the way iPod warranties work - you are completely covered for the first six months. If you have a hardware failure, bring it in/send it in and they fix it or give you a new one. For the second six months, if they have to replace it, you pay a $29 handling fee and get a new one. When I say "new" I mean "service part." Most of them end up being new I think but it depends.

To the OP - if you have a local Apple store, take it in and have them look at it. They will run a test on it (keep it for 24-48 hours) and decide whether or not to replace it. And you wouldn't have to wait/pay for shipping.
