Got a question for you?

I have Windows 2000 on my pc, can I just upgrade from it to XP Home SP2 or XP Pro SP2? I do not want to format then install XP Home SP2 or XP Pro w/ SP2 I want to know if I can just leave Windows 2000 on my Dell 2300 and then just upgrade.

Can I or can't I do that?

Thank you all if you can help answer that and maybe give some suggestions ect.

Thank you

yes you can buy an upgrade version, I wouldnt recommend it but if thats what you really want to do!

I also strongly suggest a reformat and clean install.
You can use the upgrade disk to do so I beleive, it will ask you to insert the older disk to verify. I haven't used an upgrade disk in a long time though, someone else correct me if I am wrong.

I upgraded from Windows 2000 Pro to Windows XP Pro. I was just absolutely despising to have to do this but I had to because of some new hardware I purchased. So I did it, and to my complete surprise the conversion went without a problem at all. All my programs were there, etc.

I would definitely reformat the drive. You can boot from an XP upgrade CD, and it will just ask you for a windows cd from a previous version (98, me, 2k, whatever) during the installation, so you can install a clean copy of XP.

You can upgrade, but you can't go back to 2000 once the upgrade is done (unlessyou upgrade from 98).

It always seems to feel better with a reformat (that new car smell placebo :)) but an upgrade from 2K is pretty painless. As with any large upgrade, make sure you do a backup first. That way if something would go wrong, you can nuke it and start clean.

The upgrade version no longer performs an actual upgrade. The install is no different than the full version, except it asks for qualifying media (like your 2K CD).

Note, it only recogonizes actual install CDs, not OEM imaged based restore CDs.
