Ok I know this is a display problem, but I think I've posted this in the right forum.

The display settings were recently changed and the trouble is that on a normal boot, I cant see the desktop on this lapy. Its strange you know, I can blindly shut the lapy down, at which point it shows, "its now safe to shut down..." but other than that its black screen city!

The thing posts fine, boots into safe mode fine. Allowing me to delete the display adapter. On its first boot after deleting I get some life, it shows me that its detected a "vga compatible display adapter", then says it needs to reboot at which point we go back to stage 1.

It has to be something to do with the display resolution settings right? How can I get round this with what I've got?

Thanks

try to boot into safe mode and lower the res, sounds like it is to large or something for the display

Safe Mode resolution doesn't affect normal mode resolutions. Safe Mode is always 800x600x8 or 640x480x4, depending on the OS.

No can do. In display settings in safe mode all I have is 640 x 480 16 colours, can't change anything.

Did you try plugging a monitor into the jack on the back (assuming it has one). It could be putting the display out the secondary connector instead.

What about the registry then. Is there anywhere the display resolution is stored in the registry, where I can go and alter it?

What do you know, hkey_local_machine - Config - 0001 - Display - Settings - Resolution

Turns out for some reason this monitor doesn't like 800,600.

Switched it to 640, 480 allowing me to boot into normal mode, then changed the resolution to 1024, 768.

Cheers for the suggestions guys.

If anyone has a similar problem, just boot into safe mode, uninstall the display adapter and reboot normally. It will reinstall the display adapter and you'll be ready to rock.

Aye I tried that first off, it reinstalled the driver but still didn't give me a display in normal mode. For some reason this display driver can't do 800 x 600.

Altering the registry to sort out display problems isn't the first thing I'd recommend either!
