name brand prefered slotloading dont mater and face plate dont mater(thou black would be best)

im looking at this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106014#Combo

how are they?

will it also act as a DVD/CD rom too?

Yes it will act as a DVD/CD Rom drive as well. It will burn CDR/CDRW/DVD+-R/+-RW/+-R DL

The drive will do it all. LiteOn is a good brand. It will serve you well. I prefer Plextor.

i have one of these, they are great! a little loud, but its all good, it burns everything i would ever need.

i got the perfect one for you man!

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16827152058

$44 shipped brand new

i have it, it's damn fast, matter of fact, THG did a review of the latest drives, and they tested the 3540 which is one model older than this one, and it basically tied for the fastest drive you can buy along with a Toshiba, what they show is true, even with 16x speed DVD-R discs, the fastest i have seen it burn is 12x and thats only for short moments, but still, it will burn a full 4.7Gb of data on a disc in about 5 minutes flat, which is fast

NEC makes the guts of most DVD/CD drives anyhow, no matter what name is on the outside

Heh! DOn't make up figures, 5 minutes for a full DVD? Fastest I've seen is 5:19 on a Benq 1640 with WOPC disabled..

i said about 5 minutes and as it turns out, i just burned a couple of discs and they took like 8 minutes, so if you want to call me a liar, fine, i never timed them, it just always seemed like it was always 5 minutes, its not like this is critical info, that drive is still one of the fastest around and was priced right for him

i know the media used can make a large difference too, maybe this new cake i just opened isn't as good as the old one, i dunno

and as far as the NEC parts in other drives, i am just telling you what i have read myself, its not like i work for either company, but just like HP paid Benq to make their drives, there are alot of different branded drives out there that are running the same guts, and more than one brand has the NEC hardware inside from what i have read

What's odd is that my times for a 12x burn (TY02 media) on my burner yields 8m48sec

This includes lead-in and lead-out times.

i havent figured out, well, havent looked into it yet, but i cant figure out why a 16x capable burner, with 16x capable media, wont even hold a steady 10-12x..........let alone even hit 16x....

i have the latest firmware for the drive, and i know the rest of the system isnt holding it back, maybe its just DVD Decrypter(what i use to burn)?

It's your media. You will need to consult your burner's tech support for the media that burns at 16x on your drive.

Taiyo Yuden is top dog, followed by Mitsubishi media. Taiyo Yuden can be found online, Mistubishi media can be found in Verbatim media (16x).

It seems like Ritek have been good from the little i have read lately about media, i see it mentioned alot, thats what my Memorex 16x DVD-R discs are, RitekF1.....but maybe not...??

guess i need to do some media research

Ritek is on my short list of "decent" media and if it is truely 16x rated, then if your burner supports ritek @ 16x you should get about 16x. Check your burner's support page for reccomended media.

yeah, the drive supports the RitekF1 at 16x for sure

it looks like there is a modded BIOS at that site i linked to that enhances performance also that i am gonna try

but i found my biggest issue, stupid me, i should have thought about this before

i have a 7200rpm 8mb cache SATA main drive on SATA1, and a 7200rpm 2mb cache barracuda backup/storage drive on PATA1 Master, and my NEC burner on Secondary PATA and was trying to write my iso's from the secondary backup drive to the burner, which was causing an obvious bottleneck in the PATA bus...........

i moved an iso over to my SATA main drive and just did another burn......way better results...got up to 15.3 with an average speed of 10.2 and total time for 4.7Gb was only 6:18 according to DVD Decrypter and it counts from the time you click the button till its completely done, which includes filling the buffer, writing the lead-in, etc..etc.....so the actual time to burn the image was only like 5:30......

Not a very comprehensive list, and those are rebadges. You said, and I quote :

, which I interpreted to mean that namebrand drives, eg. the Pio 109/110 are actually rebadged NECs, which is not the case.
As far as the burntime question is concerned, good you said 8 minutes != 5 minutes.

well guess what "mr. i know everything about drives" ?

i dont give a damn what you think

i said "most" and i should have said "alot" or "many" of other drives use NEC internals, and i said "about 5 minutes" and it turned out to be 6 minutes once i got things working better, and if i got better discs that work better with my drive it would be under 6 minutes, which would be "about 5 minutes"

so unless you have something to contribute to the topic i have to kindly ask you to F**K OFF!
