Steam Hates Me

Here's the rundown. I can't seem to play CS and DOD on my computer for some odd reason. Specs are down below in my sig. Everytime I enter a game, as I try to run around there are jolts / spasms / seizures of movements, SIMILAR to lag, but much joltier. I can run like 5 steps and it would do a back and forth step movement and crap.

Next to that problem is the fact that I can only come up with a short short list of servers to join on the Servers window (yes I did play around with the basic filter options). I used to get a list of lots of servers for DOD, now I only get like 15ish.

Is my AMD X2 a problem? What is going on? Thanks!

Is this happening after a re-install? Or is it something that just started happening recently?

Did you try to set the affinity for the game to see if it reduced the stuttering? Also, are you talking about the old CS and DOD or the new ones?

I had a similar problem w/ HL2 when I went to replay it recently after I got my X2. Setting the affinity helped on one occasion, and I had no more problems on any other occasion.

Well I am in too deep to reinstall, I cannot remember if this just started happening, I think it's been happening since I installed it. HL2 plays beautifully. I will see if the affinity thing works, btw when I set that to one processor, will it stay like that forever or do I have to do it each time I play CS?

How do I set the Affinity again? Steam? CPU 0 or 1? Thanks!

HL2 and HL:Source work fine without affinity being set. I dont see why CS:S would be different, but it might be worth a try.

Well my CS:S has an occasional problem, sometimes after long time of playing, it will just close steam completely. Doesn't do this with HL2 though. So how do I set the affinity for CS?

CTRL-ALT-DELETE then find the game in your processes list - HL2.exe for example, right click, select set affinity, set it to one CPU.

You have to do this every time you start the game.

I know you don't want to hear it but perhaps you should try reinstalling. Once when I had steam problems a freind of mind suggested deleting the config file , and that solved things for me. After just some brief poking about in the valve/steam folder I found a executable called "steamrestore" maybe that would do something positive if doubleclicked?

Good luck, your problem sounds like the pausing or "nforce3+6800" issue I suffer from. Its not a framerate chug or lag, its like it runs good for ahwile then freezes for x number of seconds then goes again. I reduced the problem by flashing my bios and overclocking my 6800, now it only does it once in the first few minutes of play, thats better right? But my hardware is not exaclty like yours obviously.

ALright I appreciate all the help you guys have given me. If I cannot put up with it anymore, or if the affinity doesn't work well, then I will reinstall it (after I beat HL2) THANKS!
