Supposedly, if the Intel Xeon processor fails, Dell might make the switch to AMD. However, this is just a rumor, but interesting to think about nonetheless. Since it's coming from some random person's blog, I would be skeptical of how valid it is, but here's the link:
Dell Drops Intel

A report issued by a financial analyst on January 10th, 2006, predicted that Dell, one of the leading computer companies in the country, will drop it's exclusive use of Intel chips, and expose the public to servers based on AMD Opteron processors.

No need to blow it out of porportion.

Holy shit that is the funniest thing that I have read...

AMD (Advanced Micro Devises) is a company known to partner with "low level" computers (i.e. computers offered at wal-mart, or eMachines). Founded in in 1969, the company offers microprocessors, Flash memory devices, and silicon-based solutions for their customers in the communications and computer industries worldwide. They combine differentiation, connections, and solutions. These are most of the things a consumer would want? Right?

Wrong. Dell tells reporters that it's customers aren't asking for AMD chips, but for Intel Xeon chips, and that if dell would ever decide to switch to AMD chips, that it would be a blow to the industry, and to the company. Dell says that it would suffer a "devastating blow" in cost of product development and support.

Not to be a F A N B O Y or anything, but the level of that idiots ignorance astounds me.

1) it's a blog
2) it's a lame blog
3) it's a blog!
---

Intel probably will eventually make AMD servers.

based on the following 2 facts i'm going to rate this blogger a grade A moron, and get my "dell switches to AMD news" elsewhere:
1) the blogger has a very poor grasp of english grammar
2) they run a blog dedicated to news about dell

Agreed.

JOKER_JOKER, there's no need to post this flamebait blog crap in this forum. Go troll in your own AMD forum.

Ask anybody and this would be the smartest route,

yet... I have been doing this for years and I'm almost in the red

Dell has never done this, and they will remain in the black pretty much for the entire span of their existance.

Yeah, we know he meant Dell, not Intel LOL!

Anyway, its not that far out that folks will misunderstand no more Exclusive Intel Deals but with Dell still selling Intel Processors. Then add to this, Dell has only mentioned Servers. Server processor sales wouldn't affect Desktop deals at all. If Apple worried about AMD supplying it with enough processors for 10 million iMACs and Notebooks large Volume Desktop sales is very unlikely.

Servers don't need the same Volume as Desktops and that makes Opteron look a lot sweeter. Can't say the same for the low volume Desktop models.

I don't think it would be a permanent addition. As soon as Woodcrest is available, Dell would drop AMD like it's hot.

I hear that Dell gets a huge deal from Intel. Intel has threatened to raise prices if dell uses any A.M.D products. There was an article on this a while ago, about how AMD is suing Intel for this "Choke hold" it has on the market.

they will never drop intel, though we all know sooner or later they will pick up AMD

How do "we all know" ? I'm missing something

How could the Xeon fail???

Anyways as already stated someone is digging up info.

As much as I like AMD, they are a long way out to penetrating the business market, when it comes to the big dollars.

It hasn't failed, nor will it. The next generation of Xeon platforms are VERY impressive and will be solid performers once all the bugs get worked out which it should by production. All this is is some good old fashioned internet shit stirring. There is no way that Dell will get rid of Intel.... unless AMD starts making bigger profits, they cannot compete with Intel when it comes to dell.

I am just saying how could you define a processor failing, as in terms of sales? or in terms of performance?

Its never a bust to intel, they will always sell processors

perhaps people should learn to read the entire article / blog before posting a thread on it and getting title completly miss leading.

They have said that for years, and it hasn't happened yet. Intel knows what it has to do to regain marketshare and their reputation and so Dell won't switch to AMD when they are happy with Intel.

Without Intel, there'd be no Dell=P

Are we talking Dempsey or what comes after that?

The Dempsey preview I saw at Xtremetech or wherever a month or so back was indeed incredibly impressive, 8-way SMP in a two-socket board running cool all at the same time....

The guy contradicts himself in his own blog several times.

We can debate the facts, but this has that unmistakable "flamebait" smell to it.......B.B.S.
