Sparks from my 6800GT

Hey all,

Tonight I was putting together an Intel machine, and it didn't exactly go as planned. Being an Intel noob, it took me a while to figure out how set things up, but it came together ok. The time came to boot it up.

The computer was plugged into my TV at the time because my friend was playing a game on my desktop. I booted it up and there was no video on the screen. No problem, so I tested it again but this time on my regular desktop monitor.

The computer booted up, but a second after it was turned on, sparks flew from the machine and the power in my room was killed. After I calmed down :)P) I pulled out the video card since that's where I seen the sparks from.

Picture 1 and Picture 2

Sadly, it also took out my monitor with it. This card was also fresh from an RMA. My old one overheated too much, like so many 6800GT OC do, and this was a brand new card replacement.

All I can say is

Can anybody explain what went wrong? It looks like something blew at both ends.

I know a bit about assembling PC's but i have no idea how this could happen  Connecting the wrong wire or grounding a screw DOES NOT make a PC explode

do you have a 24 pin psu into your mobo's 24 pin connector? i started a 6600GT on fire (bfg also) and another one died after it. i bought a 20-24 pin adapter and have been good for 2 months :)

yeah... i'm sorry this is just odd, if it was an RMA then i would suggest that something went seriously wrong when they thought that card was suitable to send out..

aside from a PSU problem or not being seated just so.. i dont see how this could happen

i think it's your psu. believe me, been there done that. i'll post a pic tomorrow of my tv tuner card, 2 slots away from my 6600GT when it blew, and show there was a fire.

It's a brand new PSU with 24 pin I believe...I know it doesn't mean it couldn't have been bad right off the bat but still.

It was an NZXT 500W PSU that is included with the Lexa case. The PSU still works fine, even after this incident. Yes, it's a 24-Pin native PSU.

It looks like some regulation stuff blew, and probably too much power went through the DVI to the monitor and thus frying some stuff there.

Just a guess.

sounds about like what ive come to expect from them...

WOW! Thats another BFG story gone wrong...
SPARKS? wtf is up with BFG these days?

BFG wants it's name to become Sparkles :D Whatever the source of the problem is they have to replace the moniter :) What brand is it?

:( I was going to get a BFG 6800GT... now I might just wait and get something else, so I can beef up the rest of the system...

No one? Alright, I guess i'll say it...

OWNED!

=), sucks though. Contact BFG, cause, sparks = not good.

I just hope they don't try to palm the whole mess off on U.E. or some shit.

Return it for money back, do not replace it. Get EVGA, it is what I, and many others, have done.

I am just doubting that it was the PSU. This is a problematic card and it doesn't really surprised me that this could happen. I am even more amazed that it took out my monitor with it though, a pure double whammy.

damn man, sorry for the lose, definitely call up bfg and bitch them out

I kinda wish something would take out MY monitor, it's a pile of crap.

Good luck with it though. Sucks when hardware blows the hell up.

Haha! Could have been worse, really. It could have been connected to my brand new TV at the time, because it was just a half hour prior.

I sent them an e-mail but am still waiting for a reply. There's no way I want that same model card in return. I always heard great things about BFG and that 6800GT was the first BFG I owned. What a way to begin off that relationship :D

My first BFG is an AGP 5900, which will soon be flashed into thinking it's a 5950 Ultra. :p

I just ordered a pair of 6600GT's, both BFG's. No complaints about BFG here. :)

So whos willing to bet BFG either blames it on the PSU or that his "IRQ's were configured incorrectly" thereby causing the electrical blast. ;) Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Like others said, if you can, return the card and get an eVGA.

Yeah, I have an eVGA card already and am loving it. I'd even be willing to take a small downgrade, but I certainly don't want the same card. I can't see them giving me my money back from a card that I've had for almost a year though.
