Lately I have been looking through guides and tutorials on Illustrator and after a little bit of playing with it and various projects I decided to try a vector self-portrait.
Tell me what you guys think, mind I still need to add some more detail, smoothing, and rounding. Also, the eyes are sort of a "trial" run, I'll probably through them to a shade of grey.

Also, here's some bamboo I did while messing around looking through a tutorial, tell me what you all think too plz:

Pretty good. I would loose the shadow around your face. The shadow in the picture is an unatural shadow as a result of the flash on the camera. It makes it look like a picture. The idea is to make it less like a picture and more like a painting, and paintings don't have flash mistakes. Loose the shadow and maybe add some half-tone shading to the rounder parts of you, like your face, neck, arms stuff that would create a shaded tone. Doing that will give it some demention, because right now its completely two dementional.

This is a pretty good effort for one who's new to AI. The portrait is very basic, but the shapes and colors are a good foundation for some more detail and a more complete looking drawing.

The bamboo looks like you spent a bit more time on it. Take what you have used in this drawing to spice up the portrait (ie: gradients for shadows) and add some definition to it.

All of the shadow? or just part of the shadow?

Not a bad start for the first time. All the shadow outside of the head - the shadows used for defining your nose and neck could be done with much greater detail. The file linked below was saved in CS2 but originally done in CS - it's a highly detailed vector file that we use in some of the advertising for my company. It is NOT for public use and I am only uploading it temporarily for you to experiment with and get ideas from. < Sorry - I've removed it from public download. > It is a fairly large file due to the amount of detail. Also removing the black box in the background might make selecting certain elements easier. This is about as complicated as I have worked on in a pure vector format - I'm sure others here have more detailed stuff.
This is a jpg of the file linked above

You should try one freehand, without tracing the photo. I think you'll get a more creative result.

An artist's interpretation of his/her subject is what makes it interesting.

Just my $0.02 ;)
