How much memory should DNS use for 1000 computers

Just wondering, we are having a problem with the memory increasing and maxing out the DC. None of the other processes are having any problems. I dont know much in depth about DNS so any help would be appreciated! :)

Are you running DNS through AD integrated zones, how long are the aging/scavenging period set to? How many servers? etc.

This depends of a variety of things however, and is not a simple question to answer. There are a lot of factors. Heck it's probably easier to test than to guess.

ADSizer may be able to help.

Link.

Yes

As far as I can tell there is none setup, if I go into properties, advanced, "enable automatic scavending of stale records is not checked.

On this site we have 2, we also have to other remote sites in which there are 1 at each. This only seems to be happening on one of the servers here, not both.

I think I may have found the problem from what you asked, like stated the scavenging isnt setup on this one, on the other its set to 7 days.. Makes sense, I just never looked as I am not even in the server group.

Neither am I, but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!!!

edit: oh, and I'm not saying ADSizer is easy, this isn't an easy question!

How much memory do you have in the system? We have three domain controllers that run DNS. Each of these has 2 GB of RAM. None of them have any memory issues with scavenging turned off.

For 1000 machines, you shouldn't require scavenging. But, it's good to have it enabled for many other reasons.

BDC is a 2ghz Xeon with 2.5GB 2k3 server
DC is a 1ghz with 1GB 2k server, DNS is only using 20mb on this server

haha sorry, before my coffee, the names are xxxdc and xxxbdc, I knew what I meant but apparently everyone else doesnt work with me :p

Increase your ram capacity and its not a issue :) just money wish I give you better advice but I didnt sleep in a holiday inn last night I slept in my computer chair and my back hurts :)
