36 GB Raptor clicking on startup (sometimes)

I just installed this a few days ago. It's got the WD Refurbed sticker on it.

Anyway. It ran fine for a few days, then when I started the comp this morning it just clicked. (click, click, click, etc) About once per second.

System couldn't find it through the onboard adaptor, windows loaded fine after that off of the main drive.

This has now happened a couple times. If I physically press the power button during the startup it will restart fine.

I ran the WD diagnostic utility and everything checked out. When it starts up without clicking it's fine. The only thing I noticed is that SMART is not detected, but as this is my first raptor I'm not sure that it should. Didn't search [H] for that (yet).

Any Ideas?

Thanks in Advance

I also have this happen, occassionally and usually just turn my computer off and then back on. I have a 36gb raptor drive. I do not have SMART turned on and have had this happen on the DFI Ultra Lan Party UT board, ASUS P4800-E board and ABIT IC7 board. It's definitely the hard drive that is the problem.

Be nice if anyone else who has had this problem and has found a resolution/discovered the problem would come forward.

how long has it been going on for, for you?

If it's been a year, I'm not gonna worry too much, but if it's new for you, I'm gonna try to RMA it.

It has been happening a few months after I bought it. I have had the drive since they first started making them. I really don't worry about it, as it is my OS drive and the performance benchmarks are awesome. I don't seem to be losing speed, and I dont care about data loss, so it isn't a big deal, but I hate reaching behind my desk to cut off the PC each time it does it (about 1 time in 20)

The only time I have had it happen the SATA connectors for some reason got a bit loose. They are not at all as sturdy as the IDE connectors so make sure to check that out.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but..........

I ended up dealing with the raptor for a couple months, then gave up on it. Unfortunately that was right after the warranty was up.

I disconnected it, and it sat in the case until a couple weeks ago. It's reconnected, and doing the same thing again.

Has anyone else had this happen since this thread last popped up?

Has anyone resolved the problem?

Did you run the extended test? Running the quick test probably won't help you, and I'd say use the DOS version instead of the windows version.

It still works fine dont it ? Let it click away just telling you Im working brother! hehe

yeah, it seems fine aside from the startup clicking.

I did run the extended test, both in february, and again the other day.

I'm gonna run winxp off it, and keep everything else on other drives in case it im/explodes on me.

How is this possible?
How could your warranty be up.
The first raptors didn't ship until 2003.
They have 5 year warranties.

Hence.. *ALL* raptors are under warranty. This is, unless you bought it as part of a dell or something.

Bought off ebay, was suposedly RMA'd already.

Most likely the guy knew it was f$cked.

I checked WD site (again), and sure enough it's out of warranty.

It could have very well been an OEM drive to begin with.

I think I payed $40 something for it, so I'm not too bummed about not having the warranty.

However I'm not willing to cough up the money for a new one.

BTW, I checked, and you're not right behind me.

Just an update......

I was trying to neaten up my cabling shortly after my last post on this, and decided to eliminate the 3 x-connect cables going to the 3 HDDs.

I made a 3 connecter molex chain, hooked it up to 1 cable from the x-connect, and connected my seagate 300, and 160, as well as the raptor to it.

Since then it has not clicked once! I have shut down, and restarted the computer several times since then without a hickup (aside from hardware OC failure errors).

I am hoping this will last.
