I tried looking everywhere for confirmation that this drive has Fluid bearings but it's not on WD's site or SR's review. I hate ball bearing drives, I used to have 2 of them, both WD and they got LOUD when the bearings started to wear out.

Thanks

dont all the black covered HDD's have fluid? isnt it like an indication? i believe i got that same HDD as you and it does have fluid bearings, nice and silent.

A simple yahoo search for "WD4000YR bearings" yields a site that mentions the following description for the WD4000YR:

WD 400GB 7200rpm 16Mb Cache S-ATA RAID Server HDD - Fluid Dynamic Bearings, Enterprise Extensions SMART Enabled, EESA, TLER

WD, along with every other ATA drive maker, has been exclusively on FDB motors since 250GB flagships were released.

Ya, I've seen that but it's from some small time store which just copies and pastes the same description for everything. I don't think all the 'black' drives are fluid bearing because look @ the 36GB raptors, they're still ball bearing :(

Only the 74GB raptors are fluid, according to SR's review: http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200311/20031111WD740GD_1.html

^ That was over two years ago

Also, the WD36GD is an FDB drive, I can assure you of that. The bearings aren't as good as the WD740GD, but they are still much quieter than ceramic bearing 10K SCSI drive.

This review, from July of 2004, notes WD's switch to FDB motors.

almost all of your newer hd's are fluid bearings unless its a total pos no name
