blegh... ive done a bit since then. too lazy to finish alot of it and upload it.
meh.

you fucking did not.......how long did all that take? MERRY XMAS

I use Lightwave, does that mean I'm not allowed to post stuff here?

Still, I haven't really finished many things. I have like a hundred WIPs, but I don't feel like posting the lot of them. Here's one that's almost done, but I only did it to learn the hundreds of parameters in Kray (a render engine for LW).

I use Rhino3d.. It's similar...

Havent done anything in a more than half a year though.

Tons of WIPS, no time to work on them.

Hupo, if you need any help regarding 3ds Max, let me know i'll be glad to help out.

Nice, guys...wow....I wish I had money for 3D studio max...how much does it run for?

I use maya now and then but I'm not really any good at it. I've tried 3ds max but it seems hard to get used to. Some pretty nice work but a question for all you that have posted: how long did it take for you to learn how to make those pictures, and also how did you get taught?

You guys seem relatively comfortable with this program, and I know you hate this question, but how long does it take to actually be able to do something original? I have a lot of other skills, but Ive yet to try 3d, I want to take a program and stick with it in safety of knowing it wont bomb out soon down the road, and 3ds seems very popular.

I just dont have a TON of time to dedicate to it, so if I can work on it in small chunks and still learn fairly quickly, i'm all about it before campus starts back.

3ds has a HIGH learnign curve and those fellows likely have years of experience using it. Simple scenes like basic water and that arent overly difficult, but it takes a lot of practice and trial and error to get decent results.

If you want to have your mind blown, go to www.cgtalk.com. Look at the various galleries by many professionals who are pushing the boundaries of photo realism constantly!

Nah 3DS Max is cheaper than Maya, it's around $5,000.

Its actually $3500 for the stand alone and $750 for an upgrade. But if you get the subscrpition its like $600ish a year, and you get every upgrade that comes out with the subscrprition. I get my version free from work, I've been stuck using Max 5 but we just recently decided to upgrade to Max 8. Can't wait to get that in.

we use this at school all the time for our engineering class..

if i remember right we do all the modeling in inventer or solidworks and then bring into 3d studio for the colors and shading.

we made some awesome animations, i'll post some after break

Current WIP. There are a few render errors in it (the white edges, for example, and some blotches), but nothing unfixable.

Mine is legit, I get mine from work, we get a licence for our work box and our home box.

Thats not really the type of question to ask on a public forum.

mine's legit for the record :D

3500 polys. It's still a work in progress - a current female anatomy/topology study.

Here are 2 parts ( A twin inlet y pipe and the Bov I am going to be running )I made last night for my twin turbo Shadow project im working on. Im going to draw up all the piping, intercoolers and all the custom parts im developing for it, probably tonight or tomorow. :D Would look better in proper rendering software. This is just Autodesk Inventor

Yo, this is a project im currently working on, i am pretty much self taught, started with 3dsmax version 4.5 when i was like .. 13, but never really understood alot because i did not understand english and all tutorials were in english. Now i have learn english, i have read tutorials, and learned from there. Now i want to do 3D as a carrer so i am studying at the National center of Animation and Desing. Basically it tooke me 1-2year or so to learn how to use the program by myself without reading tutorials, BUT at school i see people who never used 3dsmax before or any other 3d apps and they are really good for a 3months beginner.

Tell me what you guys thinks. It has been rendered with default scanline renderer with a skilight and a little lighting setup. Aviator fur was made with the new Hair and Fur plugin with 3dsmax 7 or 8 dont remember..

The character needs more anatomy reference and the plane needs more details, unless you're working under a poly limit. I really like your sense of style and the project looks like it could turn out really well as an animation.

cool thanks. Yeah for the face, i will take the time with one of my teacher who is the lead caracter designer for Ubisoft (Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell creator btw ehhe) it will help me for the anatomy, and for the plane, i dont really now what more to add, i dont think i need too much more details on the airplane because, the way the storyboard is made , we wont see the plane from other angles then Side and back. With a good texture and normal map, some motion blur and noise movement on xyz axis on the camera, it will look good i hope hehe.
