AMD Opteron 165 - $278 - Lowest price ever?

It so so so pays off to wait, I don't even have my motherboard and I paid 3 hundred freaking 55 bones for the opteron 165. What a fool I am now :(

scorching prices for the 165 right now though...Get it while you can at 270 monarch tends to change thier prices once alot of the stock starts to move, I was checking prices on the opterons once and I went back to check on the specs and the next thing i know the price went up 10 bucks. At the time I felt like I was buying at the stock market. So get them now! or you can wait it out and see if it goes lower..... :p

This makes me very sad. I really shouldn't be spending money on this. If I buy the CPU then I'll probably get a board, video card, and psu and I can't be spending that much money right now :(. Maybe I will anyway...... I want a dual core.

monarch is VERY capricious with their pricing. it'll be this way for a couple of days and they'll dime it out around 300.00

ahem. i'm consistent, at least, with what i've got going on....my pricing will not change.

I think I remember some web site had a "first quarter 2006" AMD price list, which had the price of the Opteron 165 scheduled to be reduced about $50, to around $279. So by waiting another month or so, this may be the average selling price for this CPU.

Thats good... but damnn MSRP is like 279 for RETAIL
These are selling so hot that it won't hit MSRP... =/

Hopefully the discount will bring it down to the OLD MSRP

be careful of "Q1 2006" price lists....just a warning.

I have given in and ordered one. Once Monarch ships it I'm gonna get another DFI NF4 Ultra and probably a x800GTO2.

What are the latest overclocking reports on these newest builds?
I'm waiting until I hear from someone who post results from this current Monarch stock.

The AMD Q1 price list that I have seen doesn't show opteron pricing:

because that's a desktop processor grid. remember, 165s are workstation/1P server processors.

The majority of 165s and 170s showing up from any vendors over the past week or two have been 0546XPMWs.
I'm not sure about the results on the 165s, but the 170s have been hitting 2750 with low voltage. Pretty good. They don't seem to do much after that even with a lot more voltage, but it sure beats getting a dud.

You are no fool. Prices on tech stuff almost always fall. My rule is "Once purchased, never check the price again."

I don't know much about the Opertons but I'm hearing that the dual cores are very good overclockers.

I got mine in from Monarch, I assume it's the same group as this one. I haven't upped the voltage passed 1.4 or so but it seems I'm topping out at about 2.65ghz. That's with 295x9, at this it's very stable as it primed for over 9 hours. I can go into Windows at 325x8 but it's not very stable, blue screening during benchmarks and the such. At the very least that's an 800mhz overclock, not too shabby.

Damn good price.

So the question is...xmas presents for the kids or a Dual-core opteron....

Well that's an easy choice. Dual core Opteron for sure :).

Hey Guys,

Been interested in the opteron 165s for a while now but haven't looked into it much, are the multipliers locked on these? Meaning is the only way to overclock by upping the FSB?

I know that AMD doesn't lock the multipliers on some procs, like the FX series...

I have been holding off on a purchase for a while but I got a lot of cash for Christams from diff people and can afford this now... (Thinking of also getting a LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D Mobo, does it support dual optys?).

One last thing, i would prolly get this heatsink, Thermaltake AMD K8 Venus 7+.
Is it a good heatsink and is 45.5 dBA at 6000 RPM loud? (I thought I saw 42 dBA was the threshold for everday noise)

Thanks!

Opteron mulipliers are locked upwards but not downwards (stock multi is 9 can go <9 but not 9<).

That board supports Opties just fine, it MIGHT need a new BIOS flash though if it's not a newer revision.

And 6000rpm is gonnna be loud as hell if I remember correctly. Read up on some reviews, there are some excellent, albeit large, heatsink fan combos that are exceptionally quiet, for example my xp-120 and fan.

That is a pretty nice price...I however have absolutely no regrets about getting my processor from Dave, I think he still has the best price around on the retail box 165. He is a damn nice dude too!

got a PM that explains the HSF noise and considerations, tried to delete this post but all I could do is this :(

Thx Blaine for the info...

BTW it's up to 280 now :(

Well mine got shipped :). They gave me Fedex 2-day when I paid for ground too. I was waiting for them to ship it so I knew they didn't run out of them before I got a new board, psu, and video card. The DFI NF4 went up $10 at Chiefvalue and now the OCZ powerstream 520 watt I was gonna get just went up $10. What luck lol.

What's the turn around time on these guys? From order (click) to ship (tracking number)?

Yeah...

^^'s not helping my patience... Guess I could always order the chip and stare at it for a week til I get the rest of my parts ordered. Ooohhh, I hate staring at parts...maybe I can fit this 939 chip in this 775 socket if I try reaaallly hard...

AMD just discontinued these chips on socket 939. They will disappear soon. {:<

I am in the same spot Opetron 175 or Athlon 4400 X2 but the discontinuation makes me uneasy.

Huh? I thought the whole "discontinued" rumor on the Inquirer had been proven to be incorrect. 939 Optys aren't being discontinued, but AMD is trying to discourage larger retailers from selling them as a consumer item.

patently false. do a quick search on these forums and i think you'll be suprised that this type of misinformation has been proven to be wrong already.

it is incorrect. trust me.... :)

I bit. I've had a 939 board sitting for a while now unused, waiting for a CPU and a video card. Looks like this takes care of my CPU problem, now... video card? :D

So Dave, I am confused. (Not really that unusual for me) Are you saying the Opterons will continue to be available, or will not? The way I read your previous replys, it seems both ways. What I have found lately would indicate continued supply. Can you confirm one way or another? By the way, I like your prices, and should have an order off to you soon. Any info would be helpful. Thanks....

I bit as well. While there I picked up some of that Golden Gamer PC500 Ram by OCZ for 250, and a Western Digital 320gb hard drive!

Im quite excited! Thanks for the link!

Anyone know anything about monarch's option for the 3 year warranty. Would they honor it and who is through?
