My Mushkin eXtreme Performance DDR 500 2 x 1GB memory is bad!

Damn - I couldn't even get to DDR440 @ 3-4-4-8!, so this really sucks.

You think I'm better off going for 2x1GB of DDR400?

hm, well tccd is rated to 250mhz at 2.5-3-3 out of samsung's fab, so if you can't break 220mhz, you've got problems. i'm guessing you have a non-functioning pci-agp lock, and this is why none of your higher rated ram is doing spec ;)

if you want my opinion, money would best be spent on a new board, or wait till M2 to get some fun stuff

M2??? Are you talking about the second quater? Or is that the new AMD socket's name? I decided to get the 2x1GB G.Skill DDR400 for the time being and I saved $15, since the price went down since I got a refund.

As for the pci-agp locks there is two choices or auto. Maybe I should try the other?

try the other setting. also, i might have missed it earlier (hell, i probably asked already), but do you have the latest bios?

also, M2 is the new amd socket, that happens to be scheduled for ~Q2'06

yes I do have the latest bios installed - A8V-ASUS-Deluxe-1017. I'll try the other setting - Also something kinda odd - the pci-agp setting in Bios is not in the manual.

Hi, I just got this same ram (991483 non-redline) from Newegg and I also have an A8V Deluxe, I can't get this stuff to go past like 220, after that it starts to blue-screen either before getting into windows or soon after.

I also updated the bios from 1014 to 1017 after I couldn't run it at DDR500, so it seems like it is an issue with the A8V Deluxe.

My question is, what should I do? I looked this thread up after getting an RMA number, and I'm not sure if I should carry out the RMA with Mushkin; get a refund from newegg; or wait two or three weeks 'till I get my DFI LP SLI-DR Extreme and EVGA 7800GTX and try it on that board. I'm thinking I should get a refund, then when I get the new parts order it again just in case the parts don't show up in time for me to test the memory before the refund period, but I'm not sure. :(

it's not a ram issue! the mobo often doesn't have a working agp/pci lock. let me know if you can get past 220mhz, even with the memory ratio down ;)

I'll give it another shot, but I've tried dozens of combinations of ratios, multiplyers and whatnot, its just driving me up the wall that I havn't gotten it past 220MHz, but I'll try a few more things and see.

Okay, I fiddled around with it for a little bit, right now I've got it running at 245MHz in Windows. I'm running 2:1 3-4-3-8 2.7v right now and I was able to run a benchmark with Everest without problems. However, I'm still having trouble with 250MHz, it will post, then right as it tries to load windows, it shuts off. I'll keep working at it.

And I've always had my PCI and AGP busses locked, learned a while ago not locking those is a good way to corrupt windows in a hurry :p

At least I feel like I'm getting close to what it should run at, its not as bad as the 220MHz I was only able to hit yesterday, I didn't play around with it too much though and the settings the Mushkin rep sent me were for a DFI board and it was hard to figure out what some of the settings were on an ASUS board as compared to a DFI. I'm gonna go try to get 250MHz (or higher?) working.

ah, that's good. here's one for you: ht link/ldt speed. what do you have yours set to?

I've always had my pci-agp locked at 66.66/33.33 - The only other setting is 75.4/37.7 and I tried it and that did not work, and of course auto is not an option if you want to OC.

NoONeTMC- what settings do you have your stuff at and what did the mushkin re tell you about settings? When you say 2:1 what setting is that as the ratios are wrongly ordered- DDR400(should say 1:1)?

Eclipse- ht link/ldt speed are you talking about 1x,2x,3x,4x,5x? - I'm at 4x since I am at 248MHz HTT

Well, in my attempts to get to 450, all my bios settings were reset :(

However, the settings I was using to get to 445 were:

Memory Voltage: 2.7v
Multiplier: 10
FSB: 245
Ratio: 2:1
Timings: 3.0-4-3-8 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS)
2T Command: Disable
HyperTransport: 1000MHz

However, this is very unstable, I've clocked it down to 243 in hopes of making it more stable, but so far it isn't working out too well, it crashes programs, but it hasn't crashed windows yet.

TheGoat Eater - go ahead and contact me on AIM, I might be messing with the bios or crashing windows, but I should be on the rest of the time. AIM: noonetmc

well I have had enough of this - I am going to get a refund for the mushkin and just got some of the G.Skill DDR400 (2x1GB) 2-3-2-5 as I think it will work better for the time being, and hopefully will bring an end to my anxiety with this whole RAM situation. In the time being I'm looking for a ABIT AV8 3rd Eye as it is supposed to be a great OCing AGP board plus the U-GURU monitor would kick ass.

uuum goat eater, winnies have this prob, known to ahppen, try a vinnece core, might be barking up the wroing tree, migh wanna get to amd

i would have thought you would learn to stay away from via! just get an nforce based board and be done with it ;)

Okay, I have come to a conclusion. After letting the motherboard set everything automatically and run at stock speeds, I ran Prime95 which failed after about 10 seconds. I then inserted my old 2x512 sticks of Corsair and did the same thing, after an hour without warnings or errors I firmly place the memory itself at fault.

Although there was a post that said Mushkin had runout of the black pcb and apparently out of their heatspreaders, I'm still a little wary about the fact that mine has a green pcb and a maroon heatspreader. It looks like I will just have it replaced, if it still fails to meet 250MHz, I'll just get it refunded.

Yeah! I too got green PCB w/ blue heatspreaders - it kind of freaked me out at first as nothing physically resembled what it was supposed to look like. And it seems like the memory itself is bad as at stock speeds and down to DDR400 it throws memtest errors. I've had enough, I am going to try the G.Skill again (last time I think one stick was dead) w/ 2x1GB DDR400 2-3-2-5 so I am just crossing my fingers now.

NoONeTMC- I would grab your new mobo while you RMA your memory since it does seem to be the mobos ///// oops I forgot that you would have to get your videocard at the same time --- just checked your posts again and i would agree with getting the refund and getting it later with your mobo and videocard.

Go for RMAs with newegg as they are pretty fast and shipped back to me with the 2day express FedEx service! but I would agree with a refund for now (w/ this mobo at least)

also personally I am now sticking with BFG for all future videocard purchases as I had a 6800GT go bad and they got a replacement to me in less than 24hours (after I e-mailed them pictures of my card and serial # as Proof of Purchase) with a pre-paid mailer for my bad card so I wouldn't have to screw around with shipping! (UPS ground $15, UPS 2 day -what I got was $25 plus don't forget that shipping it would cost me like $8.50

Now if I can just find a DFI LANPARTY UT nF3 ULTRA-D that is not in Australia

ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 looks good - just need to figure out how well it will OC - I just need a moderate OCer and need to find out if it requires a 24pin PSU (430watts enough? for X-Fi 7800GT, 2 HDs, and 2 optical?)

how many amps does it have on the 12v rail? 430w might be pushing it for that card and an oc'ed a64

then maybe I'll pick up an Enermax Liberty 620watt PSU

It is what I will use for next rig - so I 'll just get it first

If you do get that board, make sure you're listening to Tool when you install it. :D "PRYING OPEN MY THIRD EYE!"

Does anyone have a good recommendation for 2x1GB PC4000 (or higher?) memory, or should I just go with getting them replaced and give it another go? The main thing I would like to do is run betweeen 270MHz and 280MHz so it would run right along side my processor overclock. If you have a recommendation for ram like that which works well on a DFI I'd love to know :)

wait to replace em till you get your new mobo. if they still don't perform up to par, try to get a refund and get some crucial ballistix ;)

ok, yeah

id go with ocz ram, it kicks ass otherwise, but

yeah, my mushkin xp is excellent

runs at 290 no prob at 3-4-4-10 and 3.1

Yes wait until you get the new mobo - I struck out twice and knowing that you have too it has to be the mobo that is the problem for sure.

(cf)Eclipse - I wanted to get some Crucial Ballistix but I heard they burn out after about two months so I opted against it.

I've also taken the memory to my friend's house and we tried to get it running at 250MHz there as well, we got it going at 240MHz without Prime95 giving errors after 5 mins, but 250MHz would get into windows for about 10 seconds then blue screen. I'm going to RMA the memory, then if it fails on both my and my friend's computer, then I'll probably do a return and buy some other memory.

My problem with waiting for the new motherboard to show up, is that I am ordering stuff as I can so I can get some of the discounts and so I can make sure they don't run out of stock. So my motherboard would probably be here next week, however I havn't had a chance to order the 7800GTX yet, so I wouldn't have a video card to run it with. That's why I'm thinking I'll have to return it, because I don't know if I'll have the video card before my 30 day return is up.

But thanks for all the suggestions, I will keep them in mind :)

Update: got the G.Skill F1-3200PHU2-2GBZX and it works like a dream - I have no problems with it at all! :D

so far I haven't tried pushing it - I think it is at 2.7v and I am not quite sure what timings to try.

have you seen my quick hack-job of a memory oc guide i wrote up a while back?

considering the Mushkin are the same thing as my OCZ Platinum EB, try running some nice tight timings at lower speeds. Since mine wont run over 268 and my 24/7 OC is 270X10, i use a 180 divider and put em down to 245. The beauty of it is they will runn 2.5-3-2-7 1T without a hitch! I definately do not regret selling off my Ballistix...
